  1. I struck an engineer in a federal case a few years ago.  Just happened to be the only black person in the panel and the Plaintiff was black.  Judge Sparks took us back to chambers for a sua sponte Batson challenge.  I started to explain that he was struck because he was an engineer and the Plaintiff's attorney cut me off with his agreement.  No one wants engineers on the jury.

Batson challenge is always a big consideration in EDTX outside of the Plano jury pools.
  2. I get what you said about teachers, but am laughing because that's the opposite of me.  Believe it or not, the jury I served on was commandeered by two flight attendants fitting that description.

Hah I forgot about flight attendants! They are batshit crazy. That’s more of a rarity in a juror pool but yeah.

And if it’s a white collar trial, never take commercial pilots. I always hear them say pilots love to avoid paying taxes and shit.. dunno, I don’t really deal with all that too much but you hear chatter

  3. Good.  I'm a teacher.  I don't want to be picked.  Don't get me wrong.  I'm all about doing my part.  It's just that I called in to criminal court, and I don't want to see pics of murder scenes or hurt children.

Every trial team can have their own set of preferences but we are a district that potential jurors tend to be more conservative(it’s changing in one of my courtrooms but for the most part across most of the races, everyone leans much more conservative. So some don’t like young jurors, some don’t like senior citizens, some done like gun enthusiasts, some don’t like overly religious thinkers.

Teachers and engineers are my main concerns. Engineers are usually the smartest persons in the room and way too over analytical. Too many bad experiences where we’ve had to let one on and they end up reinvestigating the case and exhibits, or they use the white board in the deliberation room to create their own flowchart… questioning shit that wasn’t even brought up in trial. It’s a pain and can hang a jury when everyone gets frustrated.

Teachers, mainly elementary are often too opinionated and can hang a jury because they want to control the room and teach the “kids”/jurors that what they think is the only acceptable conclusion. They are adept at herding cats and it can be problematic in a jury room.

I mainly do drug trafficking and child exploitation cases. The kid stuff is usually pretty cut and dry, picking a jury is basically finding 12 that can stomach sitting on that jury(it sad how high a percentage of every jury pool has had familial experience with this stuff) and then the deliberations usually don’t take too long.

The drug trafficking takes more work to pick a jury because conspiracy is always a hard concept to explain to a lot of jurors. Which again is where engineers and teachers don’t help

  4. In fed court, that’s usually first up.

We all are introduced, ask if anyone knows us, same for defense.

We read our witness list, ask, defense usually doesn’t have to read theirs if they even have one.
In general if someone does know them, it’s a fine line of follow up to avoid tainting the jury perception…

Had someone recognize me once from grade school, I had him cut right away but his answers later were so dumb he was struck for cause.

Recognized a few teachers of my children that didn’t realize they were my kiddos teachers. But as I’ve said I don’t like engineers and teachers, those are usually straight peremptory strike if we can’t find cause…

  5. In!

It’s gonna have Eastern District of Texas all over it when he comes to Paris for that Fannin County action! All of us have been hype, I had to miss when Ty came to present to us EDTX folks last year, the deputy marshals were all hyped because he brought one of his pistols.

My wife liked/didn’t like the first episode; she can’t stomach slave-era trauma.

    We are in hard

  6. There’s nothing special about the place- all it takes is a hyperdrive and the coordinates. The coordinates are on the hyperdrive ring attached to thrawn’s star destroyer…

Right and technically if Huyang was doing his job, he should have been charting the path.

So they just need to repair her ship or snag a new one somewhere close by and then take a longer trip back home. Way behind Thrawn tho

  7. As for Alicia Silverstone....not bad at all aesthetically.
We all age and some worse than others.
It was slow but I gotta say I was ok with that.
By the way, the contractor was one sneaky bastard.

Loved that scene. Benicio can be a bad mofo.
  8. Same boat.  Acting was good, but the story was run of the mill.  Have no clue what Alicia Silverstone has been up to, but she's held up pretty well.

The first I had seen of her recently was the sequel to Valley Girl… she played a grown up Julie (deb foreman)
  9. It’s power was down to begin with, it’s been getting hammered by eye of scion gun ships, the space mines, etc, now as the ties made their straggling runs Huyang says they don’t have enough power for what she’s diverting. Which in reality was just to pull a Holdo maneuver.

  10. Watched Reptile last night.

Not horrible, not great. It kinda felt like they didn’t quite know what type of movie they wanted to make.

Lots of you thought it was gonna be this guy, wrong! Roundabouts.

Benicio was great in it though.

My wife and I liked it enough.

  11. Great episode… great finale…

Thrawn is always amazing, sunnavabitch loves his aerial bombardments. His ronin speech to Ahsoka was perfect.

Damnit the Baylan/Ray part hurt to watch. It was so perfect and yet sad to see. Agree they just need to recast, no cgi or “mask”.

Chop I’m sure is gonna be ready to slaughter another 10-20k troopers after this.

Ezra building another saber was a nice touch with Huyang.
Nice reference to Kanaan and Caleb during their conversation about his thin saber and the emitter shield.

Feel free to fix that YouTube link
  12. So Ahsoka has to have a spare lightsaber on the ship right? Everybody is dead. You’d think she’s pick up an extra during her travels. Ezra needs some steel in his hands.
I think we’re speeding towards a Season 1 cliffhanger. I think the gang engages Thrawn and his allies, but it doesn’t get resolved. And… we’ll wait 3 years for Season 2.

They’ve shown her light saber/bokken closet a few times already. Huyang looks to have kept them through his years post purge. Along with the marksman training remotes

  13. . You know someone would force a romantic relationship between Bear and Elora at some point.

I think they have been alluding to some kind of relationship building between Bear and Jackie.

Bev could see the snag coming when they were working together at the IHS. Rita references it when she is is leaving town and they both kinda shy away from each other.
  14. This may just be "end of series" pablum, but I was encouraged?
I do want to do spin offs. I’m already trying. As soon as we announced the ending, I was like, ‘I think I know of a great feature film that I could do, a Rez Dogs return.’ So, I’m already plotting. It’s just that this story needed to end. This story was about loss and grief and coming of age. And this was the arc that we wanted to tell. It doesn’t mean we can’t pick it back up. But there is not a continuation right now. It could easily come back, but it’ll be something else. And it will be later.

    I like that.

He could an anthology style series of different groups, families etc and I’d be down with that
  15. Lol I love that the Star Wars nerds have labeled Chop as the most dangerous droid.

He has roughly 50,019 kills, and he’s tried to kill Ezra twice in season 1 of rebels.

So yeah his lounge was absolutely with bad intentions!
