  1. 30 teams each offering max deals to two guys means 60 guys make 2/3 of the money, while 300 guys are splitting the other 1/3. On average that's going to mean stars make as much as the entire rest of the roster, and in practice means they're making 40+ times the guys on the minimum. I'm about narrowing that gap.

  2. I'm totally in favor of players in general making more. And I don't actually care about the absolute number. So if Brown gets $60M/year, good for him. My only issue is in the context of team and league management. If you have a salary cap but designate 60% of that cap to 2 players the majority of players end up getting screwed. Raise the % of revenue given to players, raise the minimum salaries, cap the owners take from league-wide TV deals and ticket sales but let them take whatever they want from team-oriented (i.e., not player specific) merchandise and local TV deals.

And FWIW I know there is no universe in which owners will agree to something like that. They have almost all the leverage and therefore can dictate the terms. I'm strictly dreaming about my God-Emperor status.

Meh, its a max deal.   I mean I guess they could have tried to give him 4 yrs but that was the advantage that owners wanted in giving the fifth yr.   If they offer 4 then he can say fuck yall and get the same on the open market.

You're making an assumption that every above replacement level player deserves a max contract here. In the universe where I'm God-Emperor of the NBA there are like 6 guys eligible for a max contract and that max is no more than 10x the vet minimum per year. There would also be no limit on duration of guaranteed deals. So guys who want to prioritize stability and security could sign for 10 years at 70% of the max and still come out ahead without worrying about injuries derailing their next contract. All salaries would also be relative to the current cap for a given year, so a max contract isn't $40M/yr when signed and $40M/yr when the cap has grown and the max would be $60M/yr. The max is something like X % of the cap with a minimum floor of Y millions per year.

  4. It's weird that you don't think carelessly endangering toddlers or children being terrified to go to school is subverting the very fabric that holds out country together. Shitty country if that's ok.

According to what I've heard today, the grandfather would gladly give his own life if it meant he could rewind to before the accident.

Why only with that conditional statement? His actions directly led to the near death and permanent mutilation of a fucking toddler. Let him swing.

  6. The OG Dune books are all great, though some better than others. Been years since I read them though. I don't recommend any of his other stuff though. I read a book he wrote with his kid outside of the Dune universe where these aliens came to Earth and got high on basil. It was just a 300 page allegory of teenagers smoking weed. Terrible.

  7. https://www.landofbasketball.com/player_comparison/nikola_jokic_vs_shaquille_oneal.htm

That comparison is very basic but it's interesting to look at reg season vs playoffs for the two of them. Jokic goes nuts in the playoffs. And you can mitigate the late career effect on Shaq by looking at the best season and best playoffs numbers.

    https://basketball.realgm.com/player/Nikola-Jokic/Comparison/49571/Shaquille-ONeal/755

PER comparison shows Jokic's last 3 seasons top Shaq's best season.

    https://stathead.com/basketball/versus-finder.cgi?request=1&seasons_type=perchoice&player_id1=onealsh01&p1yrfrom=1993&p1yrto=2000&player_id2=jokicni01&p2yrfrom=2016&p2yrto=2023

See image highlight the advanced metrics demonstrating higher WS/48min on lower USG% for Jokic over the same ages. The WS/48 differential goes up for the playoffs as Jokic's USG goes up.

There's also the fact that in the modern game Jokic is an actual threat from 3 and can actually hit a free throw.

    EDIT:

Re: Dirk vs KD, I was probably wrong for that but the advanced stats suggest it's probably a closer call than most would expect. I limited to the years before KDs injury and the same time span for Dirk. https://stathead.com/basketball/versus-finder.cgi?request=1&seasons_type=perchoice&player_id1=nowitdi01&p1yrfrom=1999&p1yrto=2010&player_id2=duranke01&p2yrfrom=2008&p2yrto=2019

Dirk Nowitzki (1999-2010) vs. Kevin Durant (2008-2019): Advanced

Wait, wait, wait........Jokic over Shaq?   Dirk is better than KD?

Jokic absolutely over Shaq. That SF group was really tough to split, in part b/c they don't seem to be similar players outside of the spot they occupy on the roster chart. But sure, flip KD and Dirk, doesn't change the overall ranking.

  9. You might be right. Let's do position by position:

    cc9641bd1cc7469f608834b71e5a16ba.jpg

    PG: 3, 4, 1, 2

    SG: 3, 1, ... , 4/2

    SF: 2, 4, 3, 1 [very narrow spread here]

    PF: 2, ... , 3, 1/4

    C : 1, 4/3, 2

    Team 1: (3+2+4+3+1) = 13

    Team 2: (4+3+1+1+3) = 12

    Team 3: (1+1+3+2+2) = 9

    Team 4: (2+3+2+3+2) =  12

Heat I know I'm going to catch: Joker == Hakeem, Giannis > Malone/KG, KD as worst SF. No matter what team 3 is the clear best.

  10. I don't rate Wade or Malone (or AI for that matter) with these other dudes. But even if we say MJ would have trouble guarding DWade (he wouldn't) the reverse is doubly true.  And if Magic is guarding Steph, who is Steph going to guard? That's easy money for Magic. Replace Wade with Pippen and Malone with Barkley and team 4 could match team 3.

Team 1 has the best defenders.

Team 3 has killers but Magic at his best is running and Jordan wants the ball in his hands. Their strengths aren’t complementary and only MJ is a plus defender.

Team 2 seems to be team of ill fitting parts, but Duncan/Stockton pick n roll would be fun. Three guys are ball dominant.

Team 4 might be the second best team although outside of Akeem are not good on defense.

I’ll go with team 1. Best defenders and killers at the end of games in Kobe and Durant with always the option to dump it in to Kareem.

    Nah.

Barcelona never happened? Giannis is definitely a plus defender.

    Meh.

Wha? Team 4 has two guys barely on the level of every other player in the discussion.

    Team 3

    Team 1/Team 2

    Team 4

The bottom line is almost always the team with Mike is going to win.

    EDIT

The only downside of team 3 is the guys around Joker aren't really the ideal fits to benefit from his passing and orchestrating the offense. Swap him and Cap and both teams are better.

  12. I'm on the fence on this issue. On the one hand no one really needs to have a gun. On the other hand the people that really feel they need to have a gun are exactly the people who should have their guns forcibly removed from them. Fuck guns.

I stand by my words. I’ve known them for a long time now and he’s one of the nicest guys I know and his wife walks all over him. Even my wife looked at the text chain and said he needs to stand up for himself.

If the kids were 3 and 1, then I’d give them a pass, but they’re 12 and 10 and don’t need a babysitter.

    I stand by my words.
