Yea, she was pretty good for 3 quarters and almost had the first rookie triple double this season. But she was bad in the 4th. Real bad. 0-3 from the field. 1 rebound, 1 turnover. A missed FT when they were trying to put it away (she did make 3). Not exactly clutch. She'll need to get better in 4th quarters to get to the next level but huge win for the Fever.

Some context for free agency....

Not sure who's still out there but they'll need to make another move to appreciably get better next year. Again, they don't have to be championship contenders but you do want them to push for the playoffs.

Eh..... I mean picks 7 years out aren't really doing much. I guess we save some money, but man the Spurs don't know how to trade.

This may be true but I don't see it in the interviews. Mitchell and her seem tight.
"On Wednesday, the Fever secured an 88-81 victory over the Washington Mystics. Following the game, Clark faced the media, who questioned her about improving her “off-target passes” moving forward. Before she could respond, Aliyah Boston intervened to defend her teammate.
“It’s okay. It’s alright. It’s alright,” Clark’s teammate said to her. “Don’t worry, because you look at Caitlin and you look at the way she passes the ball and so sometimes things are going to happen that way and that’s okay because we’re not going to let her hang her head.
“We’re not going to hang our head off of any missed passes because we’re still continuing to gel together and we know that she’s a great passer, so if she thinks she can get that ball there, she’s going to throw it. And if I miss it, then it’s we’re good. We’re alright. Don’t worry. We’re good.”FTR, I don't think her teammates dislike her either.... but folks can't have it both ways. He team hates her so they don't pass her the ball intentionally and sabotage themselves to the point of losing. And the reason is always..... jealousy!!!! Silliness. These are professionals. Maybe some of that goes on to a degree but her coaches and teammates seem to like or enjoy her fine. She's a wondeful passer. I'd want to play with someone who passes like she does.

For whatever the reasons (I think there are several), I don't think she lasts. I admit I don't follow the WNBA coaching carousel so not sure how she's thought of, but I will say while the pace is decent, the WNBA plays an old style of basketball. Very 90's and aughts. Maybe they need their MDA to come in and reimagine the game a bit. Seems like Clark could play an even higher pace. Another thing about Clark. She has great instincts so I expect her to become much better stealing the ball. The women play really loose with the ball. Men do to it seems. That said, she should be playing Euroball when it comes to screening. She moves like 5 feet every time. Good for effort but bad for execution.
9 hours ago, DixonHur said:Of course, you can... all she can do is put the ball on the money, she can't catch it for them.
Either way, why do these passes look like they are in slow motion? I keep expecting them to get picked off.
She's a fantastic passer and her instincts are elite. But, she is loose with her fundamentals (boring!!!). She gets way too many passes into the post or off PNR which are deflected or stolen. She doesn't get great angles when trying to pass in the post. She needs more bounce passes into the post and for pick and pop off screens. She'll learn, but right now a lot of the turnovers are on her. Yes, she's a PG so having a high amount of time with the ball in her hands will add to turnovers, as will her teammates not being used to playing with her (Magic had this issue) and fumbling too many passes, but I'm betting in the tape room, they talk to her about angles, more bounce passes, creating space or passing lanes with leverage to reduce TO's. Still has spectacular vision.

I wouldn't call it "great". Lots and lots of badly missed shots including way too many lay ups.
But it was entertaining in the sense that it came down to the very end.
I mean, it was a good game for two sub .500 clubs in the WNBA where every play is below the rim. Expectation wise, it was a good game.

And then you wonder why an Olympic coach who has 10 other better players wouldn't necessarily want Clark riding the pine vs Australia.
2 hours ago, definitely not derka said:the craziest part of this entire thing by far is that cc’s own teammates and coaches seem to hate her just as much as angel reese and chennedy carter. they don’t have her back when she gets roughed up, they freeze her out, they ignore her down the stretch of close games…the entire thing is just baffling.
Hmmm..... that is kind of interesting. So her opponents don't like her and now you're saying her own teammates don't like her? Weird. What's the constant in these equations?

Windthorst has Wemby on record of saying he wants to win now. Trying to find the exact clip
He said it right after he got drafted but in reality, I think he understands its a process. Next season, the goal is to get better all around and make the playoffs, even if it's the play-in game. The year after is when you really want to make a move. There's a bunch of interesting scenarios for the Spurs to look at to get better but realistically, they're like 4 players away from being a true contender.

Leattner instead of Shaq is definitely the best parallel assuming another college player is going rather than her. I don’t know if that’s the case or not because I haven’t followed.
If you need every roster spot to ensure you win the gold you take the 12 that give you the best shot. Clearly that wasn’t the case with the Dream Team. I honestly don’t know about this years Olympic women’s bb fields.
Laettner earned his spot. He was coming off back to back championships championships and swept every major award that year for best player in college basketball. Shaq was certainly the best potential in teh draft and with his size and quickness, easily the best prospect, but a lot of times big potential doesn't refine until they get to the pros. He was 19-20 years old and he was a beast but his teams never really did much in the tourney. They only won 1 conference championship and were just eliminated in the tourney by and Indiana team who didn't have a guy over 6'9". In retrospect it's easy to bag on Laettner because he was a dick on the court and Shaq went on to become an all-time great. I think most folks would say Shaq was going to have the best pro career too, but in college, it wasn't controversial to say Christian was the best player in college, just like Clark was. And there was one college spot because that is what was negotiated between USA basketball in the NCAA, not because anyone thought Laettner was the 12th best player in the USA. They had to pick one.

For the women's college hoops experts on here (I am admittedly not even a men's hoops expert), who would say is the 12th spot on the Olympic roster? I know it's not fair, but every single team has their 12th player. The one that plays only every other game and even then for just 3-5 minutes? Every competitive team has one from high school to NBA to the Olympics. Who would it be on this Paris squad? I'm not gonna compare stats or value add. I'm just wondering who it would be.?
Someone will say, but arguably the best PG in the WNBA was Chelsea Gray. She is hurt with a foot injury and may not be able to play. This could be Clark's invitation to take but the issue is Arike Agunbolawe who plays guard and for the Dallas Wings is better than Clark and she didn't make it at guard.
On 6/10/2024 at 4:19 PM, Mitch Cumsteen said:I don't really follow this shit, but is a 41 year old Diana Taurasi really better than Clark is right now?
Taurasi is averaging 17.0, 4.4 and 3.9. Clark is averaging 16.8, 5.3, and 6.3, and doing it while being hounded from the second she leaves the locker room.
Mitch.... c'mon. You're better than this. First, Taurasi is an all-time great for the WNBA, basically like the Lebron or Kobe or Bird of the league. If she wants to go, she goes. Second, now look at the metrics that matter.... You know them. PER, WS, WS/48, TS% and while you're at it, look at that TOV%. Oh wow.

It’s almost as if you don’t understand how the cap works. The article is misleading as it really has to do with how the roster looks from contracts. A lot of the roster extensions will never be paid. The lions extended a lot of stars. The cowboys didn’t extend Dak (probably $240m) or CeeDee yet ($140 m) so that’s $380m on two players.
Every one has the same $255.4 million cap for 2024. That counts the 53, the practice squad, rookies, and dead cap. Jerry spends every dime of it. Thats the problem.
Jerry and family are making a fortune in oil and gas. They have lots of real estate holdings. The stadium and star bring in a billion a year.Huh? We've already been through this, the salary cap is just an accounting mechanism to try and create equitable spending but it really doesn't account for cash flow or cash spending which is the real cost of doing business. How many times have we watched Roseman of Philly outspend us and somehow get out of owing so much money? Because he understands the rules an can manage the risk a lot better than our dopes. The Jones' ain't poor..... they just spend on their team like they are and then sell the fans on it's the player's who are to blame. Stephen operates like he's a small market team in baseball.... Now, that cash flow will jump in the next 3 years if he does what he's supposed to and pays the big 3. Our front office really sucks at negotiating big contracts and the timing of them.

Fantastic answer. All of it's true. Her time will come. If she improves she may even be a late addition; Chelsea Gray has a foot injury and hasn't played in 9 months. Folks need to take a breath. It's all gonna be okay. She'll get her chances..... maybe some time soon.

Doubtful. Maybe in the teens, but it was only a partial tear and no other ligaments were reported. It's a minimal as you can get. I haven't seen where they decided on surgery. May just be rest, although I doubt it. Most likely a redshirt year.

CeeDee's deal should have been done back in April....
CeeDee wasn't going to do a deal in April without seeing what the market looked like unless the Cowboys wanted to set the market, which they're really bad at. If you wanted to re-sign him, you could have said last summer before he blew up, but it would have been early. No excuse not to re-sign Dak last summer coming off a statistically okay year, but checking under the hood, he had some bad luck. Now he's coming off a 2nd place MVP season and his market probably went up 10m per. Again, the front office is really bad at contracts, especially big ones....

With every WR class being touted as the bestest ever, I wonder how many teams are going to opt to go with the "let them walk and draft another guy" approach. I always thought that the further away you are from the ball, the more expendable you are. This seems especially true for receivers as all the best athletes tend to play that position.
I think we're getting to the top of the WR market, where more teams just won't play in that space and therefore the top of the market starts to stall, sort of like you saw with RB's. Now, will it be as pronounced as RB's? No. Will you still see some big contracts for guys? Probably. But could you see top % of cap contracts stall out or even recede? I would guess...... yes, slowly. But who knows with the salary cap appreciation. I do not think you'll see the entire position just undercut like RB's were.
BUT, remember when the league had moved on from paying RBs, especially those who didn't have elite hands, and it was thought the Rams had set the market, foolishly, with Todd Gurley??? And then a really dumb front office who made a dumb draft pick by picking a RB in the top 10, when 90% of the league wouldn't do that anymore, decided before his contract was up to re-set said market with a really dumb contract? Remember that..... Yea, that Zeke extension was so fucking fun.
We're going to pay CeeDee, like we should and have to, and it going to be for a lot of fucking money. Remember, Jerrah's that option quarterback, just wanting to see more cards played..... Ha, ha, ha!!! Fucking moron.

Meh, she hip checked her a bit. That wasnt some "assault" or "attack" like so many are making it out to be. Clark acting like she got shot is fucking ridiculous. She flops constantly, stiff arms when she has the ball and talks shit all the time. Yeah a top level competitor is going to eventually have an issue with that.
So....... she's Lebron? Or Luka? Or any current NBA player.......

Getting back to the draft during what will be an interminable wait until the finals... more and more Castle makes sense at 4, which means they will probably do some unexpected Josh Primo/Luka Samanic dumb shit and fuck this whole thing up. He should be available unless Houston trades #3 to someone who wants to move up for him. I figure Risacher/Sarr go 1/2, in either order, then Houston takes Sheppard or Clingan.
At 8, I'm starting to come around on Dalton Knecht. He fills a desperate and immediate need for a shooting wing. He's a competent defender or at least big and athletic enough (39" vertical, fastest shuttle in the combine and second fastest in lane agility) to become one. Do you spend #8 on potentially the next Doug McDermott? The thing about Knecht that makes his developmental curve a little different is that he grew 5 inches after high school. So, it's not like he maxed out just by aging and being older than his peers like that one dude that killed Kentucky in the first round of the tourney. He maxed out by hitting a late growth spurt. It's reminiscent of the Derrick White trajectory, even down to the part about playing small college ball in Colorado before growing taller and then stepping up in class twice. The Spurs have always been drawn to those rags to riches stories about guys who have had to work their way up vs guys who came up through the AAU entitlement system. I could talk myself into him despite his being older than Wemby, Sochan, Branham, Cissoko, Barlow, and Wesley. He would immediately supplant Champagnie in the lineup.
If they are going to roll the dice on another can't shoot prospect instead of Knecht, I'd go with Cody Williams. He's one of the easiest to visualize being a great pro because of his brother, yet also requires the most projection to get there. Also, has one of the longest developmental timelines, which will say something about their patience if they go there. Dillingham is also likely to be available at 8 as well but I don't think they want to play like they will have to on defense if he's your lead guard.
This is good information. I go with Cody personally who could never get in a rhythm because of some freaky injuries, but his stock may be fading a little. I'm not a huge fan of this draft. I use one of these picks for a good young starter or take it and trade into another draft lottery, probably with 8. Sucks because in a good draft, you probably walk away with your core. This draft is trickier and it's easy to see not moving the needle much. Hopefully the Spurs can get it right because the rest of this roster is pretty bad.... really bad.
We had 0 guys who on a per minute basis really played winning basketball (TS > .550; PER > 15; WS/48 > .100; VORP > 1.0) besides Wemby. Tre Jones and Vassell were really close so they probably stay unless you get an insane offer on them. Anyone else? Should be eligible to move immediately if it's better for the team L-T. Jeremy Sochan is a losing basketball player as a package. I like some things he does outside the boxscore and in isolation but as a package on the court -- he's not good right now and I would argue it's because the staff has done a really bad job of defining his role. Team still needs playmaking, shooting, and some energy. Hope we can take a major step forward next year. The goal should be the playoffs.

In today’s NFL the general rule is the RB wall is 27 years old, and 1500 touches. Zeke will be 29 during the season (and he came in young) and has 2420 touches. It’s amazing he can still walk. Terrible signing. I wouldn’t give any RB a second contract. Get a good one cheap early and run the to death, replace, repeat. I wouldn’t give Jim Brown a second contract these days. But remember back in that 16' draft..... we could have gotten Jalen Ramsey instead and followed up with a guy named Derrick Henry in the 2nd..... He's still getting it done okay. This wasa major fuck up. Cowboys were still operating like they were in the 90's, drafting a RB in the first 20 picks. Still fucking up after all these years.

I absolutely understand this concern, but I think they've put themselves in a corner. I guess you could put Lang at C, Beebe at guard and throw Smith out at tackle, but they seem very reluctant to do so since they have an All-Pro with Smith at OG. If Guyton is just terrible in pre-season, then this is probably what you get though. I think Guyton will be given every opportunity to win the LT job, even if he may not be ready.

There were a ton of RBs taken between their 3rd and 5th round picks. Guessing they liked one or more of those guys and when they were taken they just said fuck it.
I remain skeptical of the claim that you can just grab practice squad-level bodies and cobble together a decent running game. The Cowboys seem determined to test that theory for a second year in a row and I expect the same results.
Why are you skeptical when the theory has been tested and proved by several organizations year after year. Now, if you don't think Dallas is smart enough or cunning enough to pull it off, then that's something else, but it can and has been done. Again, it's not optimal but good front offices with veteran QBs can do it. And I do agree with you, the sweet spot for RBs this year were in the rounds they didn't have a pick because they gave them up for Gilmore and Cooks. When no one dropped, they followed their board.... Sucks, but that's what happens when you mismanage the front end of the offseason. A good front office would wait until round 2 and then snatch up someone who may not be part of the future plans of another team for real cheap.... like Pierce or Raheem Mostert or Jeff Wilson in Miami.

It’s as random as Chris Paul. DD has generally been a good soldier and decent mentor, Pop likes him, he may only want a 1 year deal and probably would move on. With this front office, I could see it. Ultimately he probably gets more money elsewhere but I can see this.
