apathy in general is setting in at a societal level. If it isn't quick brain tingles it's just not happening. People can't be bothered to read anymore, can't be bothered to do anything.

I seriously have no idea what people think they are doing to be productive or additive to society with their work, school feels the same way - why the fuck does it actually take a full semester to learn what they are trying to teach? I don't think it does, it has more to do with kids need to go somewhere that is away from their parents than it is about the curriculum needing that much time to set in. The access to information and ability to test for comprehension is such a short cycle now that traditional school learning is actually pretty fucking stupid at this point if you have a competent person driving accountability and outcome based learning.

Depends on what you're learning of course. I needed a basic level of SQL for a job interview recently and learned that shit in a day on Coursera to the ability it needed. Taking and paying for a legit course that would have been a massive waste of time/resources. For my MA in history, it was absolutely necessary to spread out the info as books can be fucking long even with predatory reading and writing a thesis takes a shit ton of time.

...Of course I'm not sure anyone needs an MA in history, or is it that everyone does?

I had a student who told me her and her family were going to Europe on vacation and asked to take the exam when she returned. This was in October. I told her no as taking a vacation during the school year isn’t an excused absence in my class. She whined about how that was the time where the tickets were the cheapest so it was the only time they could book. I said “was it really THE ONLY TIME you could book? You don’t get special treatment because you consciously chose to take a vacation during the school year. You have to accept responsibility for your actions, that’s how life works.”

Ultimately, I let her make up her exam but with a 50% late penalty attached to the final grade. She made a 23. She dropped the class a week later.

In undergrad I had flown to see my then gf on her birthday and had two midterms the next day after returning. Well of course there was a bomb threat, and I was pushed back missing both exams. One prof was understanding, but the other prof named after a cheap Mexican restaurant gave me a 0. I was able to salvage a C in the course but I was never able to personally recover from the shame and graduated with a 2.333 GPA. I often wonder where my life would have gone if it hadn't been for that one professor.

  3. Here is what is going to happen

USA finishes 2nd in group with loss to Uruguay, 1 tie, and 1 win in uninspiring fashion. USA then falls to Brazil and we get a "Well it was Uruguay and Brazil!" so he keeps his job for the WC.

At the World Cup it will be the exact same thing with a 2nd place in the group then losing in the first knockout game. There are more excuses and then a win over Mexico in there somewhere makes the federation boast how great we are for another cycle.

  5. I'm of half a mind to say the FO knew this team was going to suck balls so they held onto Wolff to take the blame while they are planning changes in the background.

I think that Herc Gomez is on the outs with US Soccer, but ESPN loves that he has experience playing in Mexico 🇲🇽 & the USA 🇺🇸, plus USMNT experience at a World Cup.

No one else feels comfortable speaking the truth, because if they do then they won’t be selected to call USMNT games or be part of the studio team. For people who have almost no other bankable skills but to talk about soccer, that is a huge deterrent to speaking the truth.

It isn’t like all of these former players think that Berhalter is great. They know that he’s shit, but he is friends with the powers that be and US Soccer feels comfortable with him.

I really wish that there hadn’t been an own goal at the buzzer.

Is that how it is in Argentina too or are they constantly talking shit?

  7. I'm still on Podcast Addict (Android) which works for me.

    Lately:

The Jeff Gerstmann Show, Brad & Will Made a Tech Pod, & Nextlander: I'm not a huge video game guy, but I really enjoy listening to these three podcasts as they're full of old school video game journalists who are in their mid to late 40s now and have similar opinions on life that I do which makes for a good time. Jeff is also a hilarious person in general in that he fills 3hours a week talking to himself about video games. Jeff is also ranking every single NES game on Twitch/Youtube on Friday nights which is fun.

Pod Save America - It is election season after all and I like these dudes.

The Gilded Age and Progressive Era - Trade podcast for the Society of Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. It deals a lot in pop history so anyone can listen, but it does get in the weeds sometimes.
