Damn I had no idea Surly had a board gaming thread. Definitely quite a few board games I love to play that I have trouble finding people to get a full game going with outside of events and the like.
If anyone ever wants to play Terraforming Mars, Twilight Struggle, Tiny Epic Galaxies, or similar games, let me know. Would also love to try out games like Twilight Imperium or Dune: Imperium if anyone is down to play and willing to be at least a little patient with me learning the game (I do think I am generally a quick-ish learner).
Also if anyone enjoys Diplomacy and wants to play I am ALWAYS happy to do so and would be more than happy to introduce those that aren't part of the greater hobby to it in all its forms (online, in-person face-to-face, and virtual face-to-face).
Not sure where you're located, but I run a board game Meetup group in Dallas. PM me for details if you're local.
Even if you're not, it's possible to play most of that stuff via Tabletop Simulator on a computer, and there a number of sites like Tabletopia that let you play online. I'm happy to teach anything on this list, and I'll play almost anything at least once, so drop me a line on the Surly Discord.

Dude... you realize Catan has become a big deal, right? Like one of the most popular board games around right now. I bet your kids would have found out about it through friends eventually.
I just looked back a page, and he's got a pretty sizable collection of games, so I imagine he's aware of the broader scope; I suspect that's why he called it "old timey."
10 hours ago, BoomMF said:Your point stands, it's a pricey experience, however the kids have never asked to play Tainted Grail or Nemesis again and they demanded to play Catan after the first game and the next night. Might have been money well spent after all. I'm for doing whatever to get them excited about spending time together.
I, too, have spent a ridiculous amount on board games, so far be it from me to judge.1 If it's getting people together, it's worth it - I just didn't realize you were aware of other games. That said, I don't think I'd pull out Nemesis or Tainted Grail for kids (or anyone who might not be very into board games).
If you're looking for the "good with kids" and "toy factor" crossover: dexterity games. Men at Work and Rhino Hero Super Battle are fun with anyone. Junk Art, Catacombs, and Seal Team Flix also fit, and are a bit more "gamey." You might also consider some of the Exit game series, if you and your kids enjoy escape rooms.

I introduced the kids to an old timey game, Catan. They loved it. I've always thought Catan was plodding and staid, but I thoroughly enjoyed it in this 3D version. Maybe I'm easily entertained by bright colors and plastic mountains. (Honestly, table presence has become such a big draw for me. Like, if I take the time to set up a game and get a bunch of people to put aside the time, the game needs to be an event that justifies the effort. Table presence is a big part of that - it can go quite a ways in helping define the experience for me. A game can be a bona fide classic, but if it looks ugly or "beige" I'll play something else and not think twice about it. )
Toy factor and table presence are absolutely a thing, but $240-$300 for Catan seems like a lot. For less than that price, you could pick up one of the giant CMON or Awaken Realms Kickstarters that have buckets of plastic and have a game that would more easily justify "event" status, albeit with more rules overhead.

This. Unlike sark and PK, Mack and co were willing to adjust to fit the players.
I understand fans feeling like something needs to be done to the defensive scheme, and there does seem to be some low-hanging fruit there.
But I'm curious: what would you like changed on offense? It seems like most of the really obvious points we're leaving behind are due to QBs missing wide open passes and WRs dropping them when they do manage to arrive. We can quibble about blocking schemes and rotations, but it's not like this offensive scheme isn't putting players in a position to score.

If the players miss their assignments, the coaches haven't taught well enough.
I'm generally sympathetic to this view, and there have been plenty of coaching fails this season, but the reality is that there's only so much a coach can do in a regulated amount of practice time. Our best teams had enough self motivated/enforcer players to establish a culture that pulled everyone up. You think the same person who sent this video out to his friends for the lolz is doing voluntary workouts and prep work?

That video appears to show a ULaLa pimp cane. We're going to win 35-0. It's science.

I can't think of anything more appropriate than this:

For those of you who like social deduction games (Secret Hitler, The Resistance, Avalon, Mafia/Werewolf), Scape Goat is an excellent low player social deduction game that flips the normal hidden role mechanic on its head. It plays extremely well at low player counts that other social deduction games fall apart at, too. And it's like $15-$20. Definite recommendation.

Still funny to me that Saban has Mike Stoops as an analyst at Bama -- does Bobby have pics/dirt on Saban??
😋
Per multiple sources, Mike knows a lot about defense. If you lock him in a room and tell him to watch film and help with game planning, he's probably got some use other than eating any leftover bags of dicks you have around. He's also a huge bully/coward, so I suspect his raging asshole tendencies tend to come out less around people he considers his peers, and he's got Saban as a moderating influence. In that vacuum, hiring him probably does make a lot of sense to Sark.
Unfortunately, Mike is spectacularly bad at literally every other aspect of being a coach, and it doesn't speak super well of Sark that he doesn't realize "knows football" and "good coach" are two different things.

I love you, ctj, but this seems a tab bit excessive. He's hired great at every single position so far. I don't think trying to bring in Stoops is some black mark that should forever be held against him. I'd imagine some thought exactly the same way about Sark as we do about Stoops at some of the stops he was brought into after USC.
There's a huge difference between bringing Sark - considered a good coach and possibly sober alcoholic - into Bama's established halfway house for wayward coaches as analyst and bringing Stoops - a raging asshole and shitty coach - into a place you're trying to get started off on the right foot as an actual coach.
It's particularly troubling if you take into account that he/CDC were told, "Not just no, but fuck no," and tried to do it anyway.

Learn your zip code and quarterback's full name. You never know when you might need them.
Explain to your wife that airplane doors should always remained closed during flight.
If a player is shitty at football, it's okay not to play them, even if they're in the schematically appropriate position and seem nice and have tried really hard during practice and are older than their potential replacements.

Welp since we’re saddled with Mensa next year and we all know how to smoke and correctly slice a brisket could I get thoughts on the best methods for cooking Brussels sprouts? Had some at Longhorn Steakhouse a year or so ago that really turned me on and have been feverishly attempting to replicate something similar. Thanks in advance for serious replies.
Fry them.
Or if you're looking for something a little less labor intensive and brassica-newbie friendly, I suggest these oven roasted sprouts.
