  1. I have about $2-3k worth of rather specialized fishing equipment sitting in my garage that I have been too lazy to sell on ebay -- a bunch of rods and reels worth $200-300 a piece.  Anybody have experience with the shops that sell your stuff for you (particularly in the Austin area)?  I would love to avoid the hassle, but the few I have looked at online seem to charge up to 50% commission, and I am guessing I will still have to exert some level of effort just explaining how to price everything and what to say in item descriptions.

  2. Pick a big six team.  More games will be televised, you get to take an interest in champions league, top four race is meaningful, etc.

That said, they all have their downsides:

    - Chelsea: No history before 2003.  Owned by a shady Russian oligarch that bought the team's success.  Longtime captain and fan hero was a racist who slept with his best friend/teammate's girlfriend.

    - Man City: Like Chelsea but a shady Arab sheikh instead of a Russian.

    - Arsenal: noted fans include Derka and Osama Bin Laden

    - United/Liverpool:  Like picking the Yankees or Lakers.  Liverpool are at least entertaining to watch right now.

    - Spurs: Everyone will assume you picked your team based on a Bill Simmons article.  Historically mediocre team that will likely go back to being that way once the current coach leaves.

What the fuck would the Trump/Hannity/Rush horde of deplorables do with their boogeyman vanquished?
    ?

It would not change anything.  Republicans still talk about welfare queens 20+ years after they got the welfare reform they wanted.  The great thing about targeting low information voters is that you can sell them anything.  The boogymen don't have to be real.     Besides, they would still have Soros, Pelosi, the Obamas, etc. to blame for everything.

Point being, it's not like basketball where the women's game is completely different and subjectively less entertaining, or baseball where the women's equivalent is literally a different game. From a layfans perspective, I can hardly tell the difference in speed or skill level when watching women on TV vs men. It's probably there if I paid closer attention to the details, but it's not as obvious as the other examples.

If you watched more soccer it would become pretty obvious.   There are stories out there of the USWNT losing scrimmages to u15 and u17 boys teams.

So how is the bbq from the joint next to LaLa’s?

That used to be a Stubb's but they changed their name due to legal threats by the bbq sauce company.  I have never tried it but would expect the quality to be somewhat similar to the Stubb's on Red River.  So probably not great.

Ginny's Lil Longhorn is still mostly legit.

I haven't been to Poodle Dog since it changed names, but I'm guessing it's not the seedy craphole it used to be.

Ginny's is still fine if you can hit it on a night when its not full of tourist.

Poodle Dog is now much cleaner, has fancy drinks and a more hipster clientele.  Still got the shuffleboard table though, so thats cool.

I have not been to Dry Creek in a few years, but I suspect it has not changed much.

Question.....heading to Santa Fe this weekend sort of last minute.

The lady friend wants to treat me for my birthday on Saturday but Geronimo looks booked. Any recommendations for a nice, memorable meal but not ultra fancy and through the roof prices? Many thanks....

Sazon is really good. I don’t remember the price, but I don’t recall it being as expensive as Geronimo.

vibrio, or the reason i won't fish the texas coast from the late spring to early fall.

i wish they had 2018 data.  i don't know if the increase is because of better reporting or if the shit in the water is getting worse.  maybe both.

    https://www.dshs.texas.gov/IDCU/disease/vibrio/Vibrio-Infections-Data.pdf

this poor dude stuck his foot in the water and got the shit.

    https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/texas/article/Man-undergoes-life-saving-surgeries-after-13972901.php

i always read that it affects people with already compromised immune systems but then i also read about perfectly healthy people getting it.  last and the previous summers, i would get all kinds of worried if i got any nicks or cuts kayak fishing on the coast.  i would wash the area well with soap after i loaded the yak and got off the water, also soaked in half bleach, half water solutions when i got home, but the nicks/cuts would continue to be red, sensitive to the touch or even burn for a few days.  always worried the shit out of me.  and i'm an extremely healthy guy, or at least i think i am.

summer fishing the flats sucks anyway because usually by mid morning, the heat drives the fish off the flats or has them lock jaw and lethargic.  since i'm making a same day, back and forth trip from austin, that's a long ass drive for a small window of fishing. that combined with the vibrio shit, i decided to take off this and future summers   i'm storing the poles until late september.  imo, not worth the risk.

am i being too big of a pussy?

Look at the county by county data in the link you posted.  Looks exceedingly rare in the coastal counties most of us fish.  Highest incidence were Bexar, Hidalgo, and Harris counties, so I don't think the spike in vibrio cases has much to do with fisherman contracting it on the coast.

  9. I would not want to confront the hard evidence on my fishing spending.  I don't even know how many fly rods I have -- I am scared to do an exact count but suspect it is north of 20.  I cleaned a closet recently and found several cool reels and spools I had totally forgotten about.

Alvin is awesome, so is Kevin Hutchison. Can’t go wrong with either.

I have not fished with Kevin, but I have his book on fishing the Hill Country.  Very useful for anyone looking to explore the area.  It has gps coordinates and descriptions of areas to publicly access most Hill Country rivers.

    Will do.

Need a few summer spots local though. I’m not sure I can wait.

Virtually every river in the hill country is worth fishing with a fly rod.  The hill country has several species of fish -- Guadalupe Bass and Rio Grande Cichlids -- that are great fly rod species but tend to be ignored by guys who fish conventional gear.  I frequently fish the San Gabriel, Bull Creek, Brushy Creek, and the Blanco.  The Lower Colorado can also be phenomenal at times if you have a kayak.  For west Austin, check out Reimers Ranch. It is popular in Feb/March for white bass, but you can fish it year round.  i would bet there are some great spots on Barton Creek as well.

As for gear, you could cover most hill country fishing with an 8' 4wt.  Later add a 7 or 8wt for fishing the coast.  Folks at Sportsman's Finest can point you in the right direction.  I also really like the Living Waters shop in Roundrock -- those folks are very helpful and have developed some great fly patterns for fishing this part of the state.

I'm thinking about scheduling a Cali trip with the wife.  I really want to do Napa (or just a wine region, in general) for a day or two.  All the pics on this and the PB/Monterey threads of Big Sur or where ever are breath taking.  Would it be possible to hit those areas up on a 4-5 day trip?  We would be flying from DAL into anywhere SWA services.  I don't know if it would be best to fly into Oakland and drive up to Napa for those few days, down to Big Sur, and then back to Oakland to return the car/fly home?  Thoughts?  I need to figure out a good itinerary, places to stay, eat, sites.  I would love to do a light morning hike one day that doesn't take all day so we can fit some more things in.

You could do that in 4-5 days if you like time in the car.  The drive from Napa to Carmel is spectacular if you go across the Golden Gate and then take Hwy 1 all the way down (through Half Moon Bay, Pescadero, Santa Cruz, etc.).  In and out of Oakland would not be bad, or you could book the return flight out of San Jose and shave off some car time.

If you do the Hwy 1 drive, then stop in Pescadero for lunch at Duarte's.  The correct order there is a Guinness, bowl of soup (mixed artichoke and green chili), sourdough bread, and a slice of Olallieberry pie a la mode.   You can also stop off in Half Moon Bay for a drink at the Ritz, which has nice fire pits overlooking the ocean.  And, if you are into surfing, you can stop to take a look at the surfers on Mavericks.

Alternately, if you want to maximize your time in one place, Sonoma has great wine and a beautiful coastline.

Y'all are just getting old. It's ok.

That is actually the simple explanation for all of the Austin used to be better sentiment.  People associate their college years with Austin.  Then when they have a real job, kids, no free time, crushing responsibilities, etc.  . . . Austin seems to have changed and isn't quite as much fun anymore.

Josh Sargent isn’t on the team. (Silver lining is that Sebastián Soto has been allowed an opportunity to shine at the U-20 WC and his performance will change his career trajectory immediately as well as his bank account.)

That is the one thing keeping me from being enraged by what they are doing with Sargent.  Soto has been great.  Hopefully he ends up in a Dortmund shirt as rumored.

Are Shasta and Lassen as pretty as they seem on the interwebs?

I think so.  You dont have a ton of tall mountains the way you might in the Rockies.  Instead it is a few huge volcanoes coming out of relatively flat surrounding land.  Google Mossbrae falls and the McCloud river to get a sense of some of the other scenery highlights in the area  .  Some pretty epic fishing nearby too.

I love the mountains and high landscapes.

The popular answer for mountains is the sierras (Yosemite and Kings Canyon).  But those get crowded mid-summer.  Somehow everyone overlooks the southern cascades, which are equally beautiful.

You could start in SF, go all the way to Shasta, and then down to Tahoe.  Along the way, you could see wine country, the Sonoma/Mendocino coast, avenue of the giants, the Trinity Alps, Shasta/Dunsmuir, Lassen, etc.   Parts of Humboldt are a bit sketchy, but the scenery makes it worth it.

If you are not set on high mountains, then driving Hwy 1 from Hurst Castle to Half Moon Bay would be pretty spectacular.

  17. Used to go to Jackson every year.  I have not been in years, so info may be dated.  My go to eats were breakfast at the Bunnery and dinner at Teton Thai, Snake River Grill or Billy's (which I think closed).  All decent food for a small town, but nothing you really need to go out of your way for.

On the way out of town to go fishing or hiking each morning, would generally pick up a sandwich at Creekside Deli and throw that in a cooler for lunch.

I don't have good fishing guide recs, but if you want a few suggestions of spots to try by yourself then PM me.  I'm no expert, but there are a few spots I have had good luck in the past.

  18. Adams is a lock to start for the senior team so I am happy he is there.  If Sargent gets significant minutes in the Gold Cup, then that is great too.  Guys who can meaningfully contribute at that level should be working on gelling with the senior team.

It would be fun to see those guys on the U20 and up our win chances a bit, but there is not a ton of prestige in winning this.  Its not like France are trotting out Mbappe and Guendouzi for this tournament.

Props to Weah. Now put him on the fucking senior team already Berhalter.

That was my sentiment before this tournament.   But he has not been great.  Probably not in the top 3 players on this u20 side.  I think there is a reason Sargent and Adams are on the senior team already while Weah is still u20.  I still think Weah gets there and ends up being good, but he has a ways to go.
