  1. The real issue here is that no matter how good that burger is, nobody should go there and forego the green chili pork stew. I guess if really hungry you could order both.

Thinking about taking the wife for her birthday and one thing I know I we want is cioppino.  What are the best places for it?

I don’t know about best, but Tadich is the classic spot for cioppino.  Also the oldest restaurant in the city and just a nice place for a martini.

  3. Pete's comment was, unsurprisingly, very thoughtful.  It was made in the context of an Esquire interview where he explained that the focus of any campaign should not be exclusively on the candidate or the opposition; it should be on making life better for everyday Americans.  Obviously, that is too much nuance for some of these idiots to understand.

Pete seems like the most intelligent candidate.  I will probably vote for him and be disappointed when he loses.  Hopefully the nominee has the good sense to put this guy in a high-profile national position.

  4. When you land there will be three customs lines.  One will be for middle easterners, and it will move fast.  One will be for white guys and it will take an hour or two.  And the third line will be for south Asians and it will look like they have been sitting there for days.

I found the taxis to be fine.  Though the first thing my taxi driver said to me upon leaving the airport was "if you want to have any fun, it will have to be in Bahrain . . . no fun allowed here"

There is a popeyes in the airport.

Yes, it's illegal to even ride a bike on the sidewalk. It's just not being enforced. Dunno why. It's clearly a problem. Segways shouldn't be there either. They're fucking huge.

I actually witnessed an officer yell at a scooter rider last week for riding on the road.  He told him to get on the sidewalk.

Part of the problem seems to be that sidewalk riding is legal on some downtown streets and not on others.  Its too confusing and you cannot expect out of town visitors to know which sidewalks are OK and which are not.

  6. I used to love Ben Kweller circa 2006.  I caught his set at SXSW last year and it was not what I expected.  His band was just him on guitar, a dude playing some sort of electric drum kit and a keys player that looked like a suburban soccer mom.

Looking at places in or near the Domain for Friday night.  Flemmings, Urban, Copper???

Thai Kun is good (but casual).   As noted above, Andiamo is close too. There is a Roaring Fork relatively close as well.

  8. Is there some inherent advantage to using the smaller briskets?   Or is the size of the brisket a biproduct of trying to source cows that were not shot full of artificial growth hormones?

  9. Likelihood of winning the general election definitely matters.  I am undecided as of now.   I think Warren would probably be the best president, but I am not sure she is the best candidate.  And even the worst in this field would be worlds better than another 4 years of Trump.  So it matters. It matters big time.

I love how we’re already blaming the democrats for half of America voting for Trump.

Party leadership (and even primary voters) definitely deserve some of the blame.  If one of my favorite teams loses, then I am generally more pissed at the coach for having a shitty strategy than at the other team.  And putting up a candidate that half of the country absolutely hates (even if their reasons are stupid or immoral) is a stupid strategy.

BTW, I like Pete a lot too, but the jump from mayor to president is huge.   We need a president that can undo as much trump damage as possible as quickly as possible, and experience in Washington matters for that sort of thing.  Hopefully Pete can build a name for himself and then run for something more substantial.

The 2 most cringiest that come to mind are when Mitt Romney went somewhere in the south and said he couldn't wait to eat collard greens and cheesy grits, and Hilary Clinton saying she carries hot sauce in her bag.

My favorite was Romney saying he has been a hunter his whole life . . . then walking it back by saying he mostly hunted rodents.

  11. As an aside to all of this.  I just looked up Phoebe Bridgers because I was unfamiliar with her music.  Upon first listen, I am digging the music she is making with Conor Oberst.  Also, she named her first album "A Stranger in the Alps," which is a pretty perfect Lebowski reference!

Great pickup - he had some ridic offenses at Ok State

They were not bad offenses per se, but they were some of the least impressive of the Gundy era.   Fedora left in 2007.   Most of the great OSU offensive performances you are thinking of probably came after that.

  13. I think if you really like any band then the idea of a different singer is always problematic.  And Fulbright’s singing style is very different (much bluesier).

That said, every time I have seen Fulbright he has sprinkled in a wide variety of covers, and he always knocks it out of the park with other people’s material.  His covers of Shotgun Wille, Tvz’s Catfish Song, and Let’s Go Get Stoned have all been particularly rad.

Let's be honest . . . he's not really a thing any more, is he?  I mean, I don't think he was ever huge, but he was known and respected.  Now it seems like he's been pretty much off the radar for years.

Is he the short white Ben Harper?

He probably has not put out a truly great album in 14 years.  But he was extremely prolific and put out a ton of great music from 2000-2005 (and some great stuff before that as part of Whiskytown).  Infinitely better music than Ben Harper.  Adams's early 2000s output is comparable to Gram Parsons or early Jackson Browne. Unfortunately, like Jackson Browne, the quality started to slide at some point.

I just assume that if they feel the need to kick Felker out that they'll just bring John Fullbright back. Hell, I'd like to see them bring him back even with Felker.

The backing band Fulbright has behind him is already pretty bad ass.  His live shows are great.  He just needs to put out some new music . . . most of the material he plays at his shows is from an album released in 2012.

How many of you enjoy fishing alone?  I think I'm going by myself tomorrow to Sabine to work the LA shoreline.  I'm not being antisocial, but for some reason I've just got the urge to go by myself.

Sometimes its what you need.  Don't focus on numbers, just get in a groove and its a fairly meditative experience.
