This is what I'm thinking. Fly into San Jose, drive straight to Big Sur, stay the night. Drive to Carmel next day, stay the night. Drive to SF, stay 2 nights. Drive to Napa, stay 2 nights. Fly home from SFO or OAK. Would that feel rushed? I could probably add an 8th day if necessary, which I guess we would spend in SF.

You may want to consider staying in Carmel w/ day trip to Big Sur.    The drive between Big Sur and Carmel is spectacular (and what many people are actually referring to when they say "Big Sur").  And there are more options for places to stay in Carmel -- unless you are Surly 1% and want to stay at the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur.

Also, I know there are multiple Napa threads here you can check out, but, FWIW, I would book a place to stay in St. Helena or Calistoga rather than the town of Napa.

I feel you need much less of a house than you do in Texas.  The weather is so damn good you can spend so much time outdoors.

Very true.  I used to live in Cal and spent exponentially more time in my backyard than I do in Texas.  We probably ate dinner on our back patio more often than we did in the house.

It was also nice not having/needing an air-conditioner (and having lower bills as a consequence).

The Napa/ SF Bay Area  is on my radar as the wife (no pics) wants to really go for the wine country thing.   Me--- I rather go camping,  drink beer, and skinny dip,  but oh well.

Question.  How is the traffic in the San Fran area compared to some of the metro areas here in Texas?   The good thing as noted my troops, you can leave here and because of the time zone end up in California before what is considered a normal rush hour.

If you are into the camping/nature thing and the wife wants wine country, then check out Sonoma County (especially the coast) or maybe even Paso Robles (with a side trip to Big Sur).  Napa is beautiful and has fantastic wine/food, but it also has a kind of Disney Land feel to it.  Some of the other wine regions in California feel much more natural.

I found a 4.5 star boutique hotel on hotwire for $88 with fees and taxes etc it's $425 for 3 nights.  Odds are its the Kimpton George Hotel behind the Capitol    Any reason not to jump on this?

I have not stayed there but have stayed at 4 other Kimptons in DC.

3 of the 4 were fine -- I think the one that sucked was called the Rouge.  Best were the Mason & Rook and Monaco, which I would stay at again.  Overall, most Kimptons are fine provided you are OK with the location.

  5. The real issue here is that no matter how good that burger is, nobody should go there and forego the green chili pork stew. I guess if really hungry you could order both.

Thinking about taking the wife for her birthday and one thing I know I we want is cioppino.  What are the best places for it?

I don’t know about best, but Tadich is the classic spot for cioppino.  Also the oldest restaurant in the city and just a nice place for a martini.

  7. Pete's comment was, unsurprisingly, very thoughtful.  It was made in the context of an Esquire interview where he explained that the focus of any campaign should not be exclusively on the candidate or the opposition; it should be on making life better for everyday Americans.  Obviously, that is too much nuance for some of these idiots to understand.

Pete seems like the most intelligent candidate.  I will probably vote for him and be disappointed when he loses.  Hopefully the nominee has the good sense to put this guy in a high-profile national position.

  8. When you land there will be three customs lines.  One will be for middle easterners, and it will move fast.  One will be for white guys and it will take an hour or two.  And the third line will be for south Asians and it will look like they have been sitting there for days.

I found the taxis to be fine.  Though the first thing my taxi driver said to me upon leaving the airport was "if you want to have any fun, it will have to be in Bahrain . . . no fun allowed here"

There is a popeyes in the airport.

Yes, it's illegal to even ride a bike on the sidewalk. It's just not being enforced. Dunno why. It's clearly a problem. Segways shouldn't be there either. They're fucking huge.

I actually witnessed an officer yell at a scooter rider last week for riding on the road.  He told him to get on the sidewalk.

Part of the problem seems to be that sidewalk riding is legal on some downtown streets and not on others.  Its too confusing and you cannot expect out of town visitors to know which sidewalks are OK and which are not.

  10. I used to love Ben Kweller circa 2006.  I caught his set at SXSW last year and it was not what I expected.  His band was just him on guitar, a dude playing some sort of electric drum kit and a keys player that looked like a suburban soccer mom.

Looking at places in or near the Domain for Friday night.  Flemmings, Urban, Copper???

Thai Kun is good (but casual).   As noted above, Andiamo is close too. There is a Roaring Fork relatively close as well.
