I'm gonna get me a cut throat in the high country even if I have to schedule that hike on our drive back to Texas on August 1.

The most beautiful fish that swims in freshwater.  Rio Grande cutthroat from last year’s trip caught in a southern Colorado alpine lake:

  2. I’ve spent a lot of time in Santa Fe and for most part, have loved the vast majority of my experiences.  Great people, great food, climate for bulk of the year is stellar.  When we lived in Austin, our plan was also moving to Santa Fe in some capacity - full time or half the year.

NNM hits all the points.  The tri-culture is a constant source of angst among the three (my in-laws have a place in Chama and Rio Arriba County takes it up a few notches, although they’ve never had any direct property problems.)  The best way to describe it is it always seems like someone has been wronged, everywhere you look.  Artist Eli Levin has many paintings that relate to the tri-culture:

Crime can be bad in Santa Fe and some downright mean shit has happened nearby some places we’ve stayed.  There is a darker side to the City Different.

We love Ski Santa Fe.  It’s damn sure not Vail but if good snow year (many years in a row now for good snow) it’s great to be able to drive 30 minutes up the mountain, hit the slopes, and then back to town for fantastic dinner.

Now that we’re in Tulsa, we’re looking for at places in Colorado or even Wyoming for a place down the road.  With that said, there is no finer place to be in the Fall than Santa Fe.  Aspens on the Sangres, roasting chilies, great weather - tough to beat.  Santa Fe will always be special place for me.

It might be worse than that, I read speculation that Putin was involved in the decision making if for no other reason to see how the Wagner guys would actually do against U.S. units.  Considering that many of them were melted alive, it didn't go well.

More information on the ‘Battle of Conoco Fields’:

I remember when the above happened but didn’t understand the severity of the complete ass kicking:

  4. Lots of sketchy shit all over Portland.  Be very aware of your surroundings at all times, especially with kids.  Homeless/open drug use problem here makes Austin look like Mayberry.

Violent crime way up per local clients we ate dinner with last night.

Great food options all over town but the smell of piss is all over town.  Kind of ruins the food scene.

Really, really sad what has happened to what used to be my favorite city to visit 15-20 years ago - a once great city.

Also, what's the general dress vibe in PDX?  I haven't been in 20 years when I used to go a lot for work.  Coming from Austin, I'm pretty easy going clothing-wise... are places like Noble Rot and Nostrana out if more casual?

Two nights here and more casual than Austin.

Did Jake’s Seafood tonight and it was fantastic.  It’s been 20+ years since I’ve eaten there and it’s still great with same old school vibe.  Apps, salads, and entrees were great.  Dungeness crab stuffed salmon was tip top.

NW Portland is very cool and vibrant (reminded me of Portland I loved twenty years ago).  Great restaurants and bars everywhere.

    Avoid Old Town.

  6. I haven’t been mugged yet or converted to a steampunk enthusiast but did have a fantastic brunch at Screen Door Eastside:

    Chicken and Biscuit:

A colleague ordered the praline bacon…dayummm:

Still extremely sketchy in parts of downtown.  Hotel clerk said there was a shooting just down the street last night and their valet just quit as it wasn’t safe.  I changed hotels.

    74F though.

  7. Tulsa experienced a wind storm Saturday night with 100mph winds.  A term I’ve never heard Derecho and a storm unlike I’ve ever seen inland.  200,000+ still without power including your favorite Okie. Small hurricane/tropical storm like damage is widespread.

Not as hot as Austin but 95F, high humidity, and no A/C sucks donkey nuts.

So much silt on the pink granite rocks it was near impossible to walk - I busted my ass once.  Since it was late and I'm too old to risk busting my ass over and over, we headed back to the truck and drove home.

Key thing I learned the hard way about Wade fishing rivers is to avoid bedrock areas to the extent possible.  You’ll definitely end up busting your ass.  Sand and gravel are your friends.

I’m on my third ACL on right knee, so I walk around like gingerly grandpa mode on wet rocks.  There are some streams in southeast Oklahoma that I won’t even attempt to wade fish and resort to kayak only trips between access points.  The sandstone “rock garden” areas are just too slick.  Like there, a lightweight kayak is great for moving around pools on the Llano from the crossings you mention.  Not the fully tricked out fishing kayaks, just something lightweight to get you point to point that’s easy to throw in the back on the pickup and tie down.
