It’s been since pre-kids or at least early pre-kids since I’ve picked up a paintbrush. I used to dabble around with both watercolor and egg tempera, generally painting rural landscapes or outdoor scenes since those are my two main connections that put me at ease.
This is an egg tempera of an old Pecan tree and windowsill in Fisher County, TX that was opposite the entrance gate of our old hunting lease. It always struck me that the tree and window were last visual elements looking out to the northwest before the landscape opened up and seemed like you could see to the end of the Earth.

The area between Tres Piedras and Chama is one of the most desolate and beautiful places in the US. Getting in and out of there in the winter can be a bitch though.
Wha? Highway 64 between TA and Tres Piedras this past week:
Damn good snow pack this year in Chama watershed.

And again, the people we meet are pretty friendly across the board, from the fancy shops to the dicey mexican food dives in Espanola.
That’s what I always love about New Mexico. I love all the beautiful views as well - desert, mountains, grasslands, volcanic areas, high meadows. It’s got a little bit of everything.
The vast open spaces always puts me in a good vibe as well.

Went through Coleman this afternoon, stopped in at Rancho Pizza and got an Italian sausage. Looks like the owners are putting in a bbq place on the corner, just down from the pizza joint and steakhouse. Rancho Q appears to be the name. I’m sure it will be good, everything they put out is incredible.
Their pizza is badass. I miss those long road trips that pass through Coleman either to a buddy’s ranch or O.H. Ivie. In Dallas, my first boss out of college was an older guy originally from Coleman and he was salt of the Earth kind of dude. Tip top.
The dove hunting out there used to unbelievably good.

The guys that were on our current place were from SA and Louisiana. They shot the ever livin' piss out of everything. Crickets wouldn't even jump. They had a paid hunt scheme to turn a a profit. Some dude paid a bunch of money to shoot at 160" 4 year old. They finally got busted and were told to leave. They left crap everywhere. A total train wreck. Their going away present to the LO was shooting over 15 doe and leaving them stacked up like cord wood to rot in the sun.
What a bunch of fucking douche bags.

Looking that way. We pulled the plug on our trip. Sucks. The trip was for my finacee's 50th birthday, so she's pretty down about it. We'll just reschedule for a Spring or Summer visit.
That’s a bummer. A great backup idea - Gage Hotel trip. Weather looks to be stellar out there this weekend. I took my wife there on her 50th birthday and she had a fantastic birthday. Great food and pampered amenities for the ladies. I doubt you’d have any trouble booking a room on late notice.
One of the very best places to relax.

My go-to Roasted salsa:
6-8 Roma tomatoes
1/2 of sweet onion
2-4 garlic cloves
2 jalapenos, stems removed
Put all the above on a cookie sheet and throw under the broiler until blackened. Rotate once or twice to make sure they’re evenly blackened.
Peel the blacken skin from tomatoes and then add everything into blender with some olive oil, salt, and pinch of Mexican oregano and pinch cumin. Blend until smooth and serve.

I had to dig around my photo library of one of the greatest breakfasts I’ve ever eaten in Carmel, CA. The restaurant called Em Le’s is closed now but I believe owners have reopened under different name, which I’m not sure - Eggs Benedict over corned beef hash. It deserved to have iconic sunbeams and shit radiating from this masterpiece:
Monterrey Peninsula is strong in the breakfast game.

Not sure if this one has been posted. He talks about all the money he borrowed to pay for law school. Borrowed $45k (alotta money back then) went to coaching and had no chance to pay it back. Quote" "$45k or $45M, what's the difference? I can't pay either." So when he was coaching in Iowa, he took a class every semester so they wouldn't call for payment. At one point, he told a loan collector he was gonna run to Mexico.
ETA
He didn't get them all paid off until his 2nd year at TTU.
Gold!

Didn’t know if the fly fishers on this thread had heard the news but we lost one of the greats of the sport Thanksgiving night, Dave Whitlock passed from a stroke. Dave was the consummate gentleman, one of the most talented people I’ve met in life - art, science, writing, fly design - you name it.
For the fly fishers, thought you all would enjoy these videos - Kelly Bostian, the former outdoor writer for the Tulsa World, spent a day with Dave at his home in Eastern Oklahoma a couple of years ago. He did an original video on Dave instructing proper roll casts:
https://youtu.be/Pb47tNX6yvw
He released two additional videos recently. The first is Dave going through an excellent breakdown of a four-part fly cast ( Dave catches a huge rainbow from his spring-fed pond at end of the video):
https://youtu.be/XCwBn9YYfx4
The third is Dave going through his fly boxes talking about his favorite flies for fishing in Oklahoma:
https://youtu.be/2fl7RC_jfYA
Hope you all enjoy. I learned a couple of new things from the master. RIP Dave. One of the very best of the good guys.- 6

Alright boys and girls. I couldn’t find an appropriate topic in short order and created this one pertaining to some old school American meals or restaurants. I apologize in advance if there was a topic already created but I’m three drinks in on the patio after whirlwind business travel for last month.
Every small town in Texas and Oklahoma had a damn good cafe that served Old School American dishes. Seems like a dying breed these days. There still are some great ones but not as many as when I was a kid.
To start off, here’s Salisbury Steak with Onions. The recipe I’ve used for several years is Ree Drummond’s Salisbury Steak (I’ve tried some of her other recipes and wasn’t wowed but this one has been a staple for several years). Highly recommend:
Talk about the perfect meal for deer lease or camping. Cooking outside always makes a better meal.
I wish you all could have smelled this stage:
I wanted green beans with a shit ton of bacon but my wife begged that idea. Oh well…Snow peas it is…

Arrowhead Hunting

Not arrowhead but found this cool fossil imprint yesterday in a gravel bar below Grand Lake dam:
You guys have all types of places for petrified wood all over central Texas. This one was from a creek near my in-laws’ old ranch in Hamilton County:
Their neighbor up the road had an entire huge fireplace made out of petrified wood. It was stunning, almost museum worthy pieces that he’d found around Hamilton and some creek over by Priddy or Gustine.
My uncle and his neighbor buddy both had farms just south of Ponca City, OK and on days off they would walk the sandbars of the Arkansas and Salt Fork Rivers collecting arrowheads, fossils, and other cool things - including a Pleistocene bison skull (one with the huge horns that angled out versus curved horns like modern bison) and several huge spear points. His buddy’s collection was spread through his barn and was amazing. I always wondered what happened to his collection after he passed away… Those two dudes were incredibly interesting people. They always had a good story or knew some arcane bit of local history.
