  1. Dammit! It’s cold up here in Tulsa today!  A hunting buddy’s dad introduced us to his ‘Quick Posole’ a couple of decades ago on an extremely cold day out on a ranch in Shackelford County.  Had to whip some up recently to beat the cold back.

If you have the ingredients, you can have this together in less than an hour.  I love traditional New Mexican posole but if you’re short on time, this hits the spot.  Usually serve with skillet cornbread or quesadillas.

    Quick Posole

    — One pound breakfast sausage browned

    — One large onion diced and added to browned sausage, cook for 2-3 minutes

    — Four cans of hominy, white, yellow or mix.

    — Two cans of Rotel Original

    — 3-4 potatoes diced

    — Chicken broth (enough to cover ingredients)

    — 1 Tbs of Cumin

    — Regular Chili powder (McCormicks, etc.) to taste

  2. The Llano is a special place.  It was my personal favorite place to relax in my 14 years in Austin.  Coopers BBQ and beans were the topper.

Sounds like TPWD only stocked Castell crossing and they’ve been cleaned out by now.  I’d definitely try back after Feb 4th in downtown Llano.  The first pool you encounter from walking down from the parking area always held fish, as did the channels above the pool under the bridge.

TPWD says “Castell downstream” is that immediately below the low water crossing? We might do that tomorrow. Not feeling the crowd on the guad or the ordeal of the kayaks.

I’m guessing a moderate size fish 10-12 inches ? So a 3 wt would be fun.

I’m a little confused by that as well.  TPWD used to stock Castell, CR103, and CR102.  I used to fish 102, as that was the least crowded.

Yes, most fish are 10-12” but there used to be occasionally 16” fish.  On warm, sunny days you’ll also catch bass, sunfish, and on rare instances catfish.  I large channel cat on a 3 weight is a lot of fun.

@Brisketexan if you want to fly fish I highly recommend the guad. If it’s been a while it’s a great refresher and you’ll catch 8-10 unless you just hit the worst luck. It’s a nice float not fully remote but enough. It’s not like Colorado trout fishing but that’s why I say if it’s been a while. It will certainly scratch the trout itch. Trips are filing up fast though weekends I bet are near full but weekdays are going to be a lot better anyway. That river fishes until March.

my boys love it, and my guide is super patient and a great teacher. If your daughter has fly fished she will excel and if she hasn’t no better time to learn.  the other benefit is you are on the river for a half, three-quarters or full day, there is no "limit" and go back. You fish the whole time, 100% catch and release so if you can catch 24 between you two then game on.  If you want a keeper for dinner not the best option. We never keep those fish.

    I highly recommend it.

When I lived in Austin, I used to love going out to the Llano for winter trout stocking.  Looks like Castell was stocked in early December but Grenwelge Park in downtown Llano is set to be stocked in early February.

After the first few days, people forget about them being there and I used to love fishing below the bridge and in the different channels.  All you need as some nymphs and strike indicator.  Used to have some fabulous days and if the weather was warmer, you’d get some Guadalupes and sunfish too.  Some great memories there and Cooper’s for lunch…damn do I miss Cooper’s.

there's a bar in Tulsa, can't remember the name.   the bartender keeps quarters in the freezer.   you ask and she will pull out a boob, suck on a nipple, and pickup a cold quarter off the bar top with.  all I got.

I need to get out more often.

  6. I started following this guy’s Instagram account back when I lived in Austin.  He has a BBQ restaurant in Olton, TX.  I was interested in stopping by as it’s not too far of a detour from our old route from Austin to Santa Fe.  Alas, this is way out of the way now, so hoping one of you enterprising Martha Fockers can check it out and provide a report…burgers and CFS on certain days.  BBQ looks pretty solid as well:

  7. I’ve posted about this place before but visited again last week - If you are ever in the Tulsa area for business/travel, head to the southern suburb of Bixby and go to the downtown area and hit up Johnson’s Stepping Stone Cafe.  Everything is great but their burgers are world-class - they grind the meat daily, flattop-cooked burgers with perfectly toasted buns ($9 for jumbo burger combo)

I mean, in OU's defense, it was a record number of penalties against OU in the Kansas loss.

I didn't watch the game, but looking at that, seems a bit lopsided.

This was ruled a catch on the field, reviewed and confirmed:

Sooners deserved to lose with woeful OC performance but didn’t get any calls.

Looks great. Whenever I try to stuff poblano peppers they fall apart after I roast them, let them steam in a bag, and then peal them. They don't start together enough to stuff. Usually just end up wrapping whatever I can around the filing. Any tips to keep them intact would be appreciated.

I forgot to mention we did steam them in a paper bag for 15 minutes or so.  Only tip I can think of to keep them falling apart is possibly roasting them less time or less time steaming in the bag.  We add a few toothpicks to hold them together in the oven.

Gabriel makes a big difference to OU. The QB that played last year could do nothing.

That poor kid was the worst QB in Oklahoma Football history.  No way should he have ever been offered a scholarship.  If I ever meet Jeff Lebby, I may kick him in the nuts for besmirching my Sooners with that God awful offer and offensive game plan.  Absolutely the worst performance in a century plus of football.

Encounter just dropped on Netflix. E1 is about the Stephenville Lights and the local folks who witnessed it and how their lives changed. A different take on these usual stories.

My in-laws lived on a ranch out in Hamilton County when this event occurred.  The didn’t see any lights or aliens but they were woken in the night by a sonic boom that rattled the house.  Father-in-law walked outside to see what was up and four more F-16 blew over supersonic at full afterburners headed northwest.  Never knew anything more than that but it was weird as shit as it occurred the same time as the supposed Stephenville lights event occurred.

I thought that this piece did a pretty good job of identifying the great places in Austin that we haven't (yet) lost.  Get out there and support them!  I still miss El Azteca the most!

That is an excellent list.  I’ve also never heard of Avenue B.  I’ll have to check it out on my next trip back.  I miss a few of those places.

  13. I thought the fly fishers on this thread will enjoy the following tribute to Dave Whitlock.  The local Trout Unlimited chapter here in Tulsa, voted last night to change their official name to the ‘Dave Whitlock Chapter’ by a unanimous vote.  The video tribute to the late Dave Whitlock was shown last night:

Dave was a wonderful, incredibly talented man.
