A guy who has shown zero aptitude in building a a winning program even though being considered a great recruiter.

Not sure I can justify Royal over RT other than Royal didn't suck at Fresno and UTEP.

People keep saying that Terry sucked at Fresno, but that just isn't the case.  First, Fresno is a loser of a basketball program.  They have made 3 tournaments since 1985.  One was with Terry.  Another two by Jerry Tarkanian, but he also landed them on probation for committing NCAA violations.

Terry got them to 20 wins in 4 of his last 5 years.  And he also left a decent roster for his successor who won 23 games with Terry's players.  Now they have fallen back to 11 wins.  I have very serious doubts that Royal Ivey could do better than that at Fresno.

As to recruiting, Fresno's median recruiting class was ranked 143 in the seven years prior to Terry.  Terry's median class was ranked 83... and he also got them the 59th ranked class, by far their best class on record.

I loved Chris Beard, but the reality is that he didn't have a LONG track record of success anywhere.  Yes, he got Texas Tech to the National Title game.  He was also 36-24 in his last two years there.  He proved he is a turnaround magician, but I don't think he is stable enough to run a program for 20 years.

Again, I think Terry needs to prove what he can do in March before I support hiring him full time.

  2. We started the year ranked #12 in the pre-season AP poll.  Terry ended up getting us up to #7 in the final AP poll.  So he has already over-achieved what everyone outside of Austin thought about this team, and that was with Beard at the helm.

If we get to a Sweet 16, we will have lived up to pre-season expectations in spite of a disastrous coaching turnover.  If we get to the Elite 8, Terry will have exceeded the expectations the AP voters had for Beard this year.

  3. A lot of people credited our two wins over KU to them "not trying" and "having nothing to play for".  Well, now KU gets shipped out West to Las Vegas instead of playing a home game in Kansas City.  And they get to play maybe the top #2 seed in UCLA in a game that will be overloaded with UCLA fans.

And that is if they get escape the 8/9 winner between Arkansas and Illinois. And they also will have to beat UCONN.

If they weren't trying, they probably should have been.

We definitely needed another shitty Rodney Terry thread. Good job OP.

I would have added it to the other Rodney Terry thread if I could.

I think the poll adds a lot to the conversation and provides some novel and surprising information.  There are a few LOUD posters who are making it seem like only an idiot would support hiring RT regardless of what he does.  In fact there is a pretty clear bell curve around the Elite 8 being the bar that needs to be crossed, which seems pretty reasonable to me.

Win the reg season conference and get a 1 seed. Conf tourney really doesn’t mean anything in committee’s eyes.

Perhaps, but losing the conference tourney likely cost KU the overall #1 seed and a virtual home game in the Sweet 16.

  6. Literally no Texas fan would have supported hiring Scott Drew in year 8.  I still can't wrap my head around the fact that he is a good coach and that is after National Title and multiple Elite 8s.

    Here are some more:

    Mike Krzyzewski first 8 years:  124-106 (53.9%)

    Jim Calhoun first 8 years:  113-90  (55.6%)

I'm not saying that Rodney Terry is going to be the next Mike Krzyzewski. I'm only saying that it is possible he will surprise some people with the level of success he has here if we indeed hire him (which is definitely not a done deal yet).

  7. Bill Self in his first Division 1 job at Oral Roberts.

Scott Drew in his first EIGHT years at Baylor: 127-116.  0.522

    Billy Donovan's first four years:  62-52. 0.544

Yes, I realize this is cherry picked data. I'm just saying that previous results don't always mean that is the best you can do. People learn. Some situations are a better fit for individual skills than others.

  8. Just a hunch, but if this staff was with Rodney Terry at UTEP, I think he might have won a few more games there. I thought the offense looked great tonight. Tons of movement without the ball and cutting. Great chemistry. Hopefully we keep it going  in the tourney. The game was a thing of beauty.

  9. Just popping in to congratulate Terry in delivering an absolute ass whipping to KU.

The staff also deserves credit for coaching up Disu. He has been incredible lately.

If he gets another D1 job it will be somewhere really shitty. His resume is pretty fucking awful once you include the circumstances of the Tech departure.

Not sure I agree here. He spent a lot of his career in juco and is in the NJCAA Hall of Fame. His only previous shot at D1 was 30 years ago.

In NJCAA he went 233-54 (81%) and won two National Championships. In DII he went 108-49 (73%). In NAIA he went 100-39 (72%).  Then his first year at Tech he takes them to the Sweet 16.

The guys is a bit of a freak and a hardass, but I honestly think he is a pretty solid coach.  If Tech was in the ACC this year they would probably be one of the better teams.  A mid-major or weaker D1 team could do worse.

  11. I'll also say that last time, the former players were really pushing for Ivey. And CDC still went big game hunting and got Beard.  So obviously CDC is capable of making up his own mind.

Why have CDC, who never played the games, make hiring decisions when we can just ask the former players who we should hire?

CDC actually did play the games.

He was a scholarship athlete in track and field at Oregon State and UC Santa Barbara. He also played varsity basketball and football in high school.

I'm sure he leans on this experience quite a bit. I'm also sure he values the input of our former players and will want to keep them close to the program.  Alumni like TJ Ford may not BE coaches, (well, actually TJ Ford is a coach) but I have no doubt that they can give good feedback based on their experience.

    The decision is still CDCs.

  13. Rodney Terry winning Coach of the Year has taken a terrible, embarrassing situation for the University and turned it into a feel-good story. It is remarkable.

If he takes this team all the way to the Final Four or beyond, this would be the type of thing they make movies about.

If we have a Final Four run and end up hiring him, there will be a huge amount of positive buzz on the program.  And the players all seem to genuinely like playing for him.  I think it could be leveraged well on the recruiting trail.

The key is that we have to win BIG over the next month.

Not alot of nba talent there

I mean, we had eight National Top-100 players on the roster, not counting 3-star Isaiah Taylor who actually played in the NBA.  If you consider that the NBA drafts 60 players a year, if all our players played to their potential we should have had 5 drafted.   Ridley was the #14 player out of high school and should have been a 1st rounder.

Compare that to this year.  We only have four National Top-100 players on the roster. Dillon Mitchel (5), Arterio Morris (19),Tyrese Hunter (34), Rowan Brumbaugh (93)

I really think if Barnes had been around to coach that team one more year he would have had a good year.

  15. Speaking of experienced rosters, it would be hard to top what Shaka inherited back in 2016.  That was one of the most experienced, upper-class heavy teams we have ever had at Texas.  Going into the season you had:

    • Isaiah Taylor - Jr - Wooden Preseason Watch
    • Jevan Felix - Sr - 47 career starts
    • Connor Lammert - Sr - 39 career starts
    • Cameron Ridley - Sr - 85 career starts, Big-12 All Defense
    • Demarcus Holland - Sr - 74 career starts, Big 12 All Defense
    • Prince Ibeh - Sr - (Became Big 12 Defensive PoY in 2016)
    • Kendal Yancy - Jr - 28 career starts
    • Shaq Cleare - Jr - 28 career starts (at Maryland)

And to that we added Kerwin Roach (#39 recruit), Eric Davis (#47 recruit), Tevin Mack (#53 recruit)

Man that had the potential to be a great team.  Instead we topped out ranked #23 and got a 6-seed and crapped out vs. Northern Iowa.  What a terrible way to start his tenure here.
