Q: when we replaced Shaka, was rodney terry a candidate? was he on the list? would the suggestion of interviewing him have been laughable?

Counter Point:  Let's say we would have hired Shaka to replace Beard right when he was fired instead of promoting Terry.  Would we have a better record or worse record?

I'm going to go ahead and say Terry has done a better job with the team than Shaka would have, all things considered.  Shaka would have found a way to ruin the chemistry.

(That doesn't mean I want to offer Terry the job right now)

but to suggest Texas is a 12-6 Big 12 team but UCLA, who just went 17-0 at home and lost 4 games all to likely tournament teams, would be a .500 team in the Big 12 is just, well, I guess on brand here.

    10-8 wouldn't be .500.  Just saying.

Yes, UCLA played well at home.  Let's just assume if you played in the Big 12 you would also win all your home games.

But... UCLA hasn't been great on the road.  In conference, you only played two top-50 (Pomeroy) teams in Arizona (11) and USC (34).  You lost both of those games.  And you barely won by 1 at WSU (54) and by 4 at Colorado (68).  Not to mention getting beat by Baylor (9) and Illinois (28) at neutral sites.

If we extend that to the Big 12, and assume road losses to everyone better than USC, that means you get losses at: Texas (8), KU (9), Baylor (14), WV (17), KSU (18), ISU (22), TCU (25)

It is also reasonable to think that one of OSU (40), OU (51) or Tech (53) would get you at home since they are all better than WSU who you squeaked by.

Boom. There are 8 losses.  And that assumes you go undefeated at home, something KU, Texas and Baylor were all unable to do.

  3. I haven't been that interested in the speculation about Terry because the season has still been underway and it was pointless.  That will all change within the next two weeks.  Either we will be on our way to the Sweet 16 and the rumbling to hire Terry will start to really pick up (and get exponentially louder with each win).

Or we will lose the first weekend and his door will be closed forever.

Given that we have only one Final Four in my lifetime and it was 20 years ago, I'm rooting like crazy that we get there - even if it means we wind up with Terry.  It isn't out of the question that this team could win it all if our shots are falling.  We can definitely beat anybody in the field.

  4. Just for arguments sake, let's say we win the Big 12 Tournament vs. Kansas and Alabama, Purdue and UCLA all lose their first conference tournament game.  That would result in the following Quad 1 records:

    • Kansas:  17-7
    • Texas:  14-8
    • Purdue:  9-5
    • Alabama:  9-6
    • UCLA:  7-5
    • Houston: 6-1

I'm not sure how the selection committee could deny Texas a 1-seed in this case.  We would have seven more Q1 wins than UCLA and five more than Purdue or Alabama.  And would have beaten the probable overall #1 seed Kansas twice in the the last week.

  5. Just want to say that when Shaka was hired it was a HUGE, splash hire. He was the hottest young, exciting, up and coming coach in the country. Everybody liked him and couldn't wait to see Havok on the 40 acres.

Now that he is back to coaching his style of basketball, he is a leading candidate for National Coach of the Year.

It's funny to say, but if anyone thinks this might be plausible, they completely ignored the circumstances of Beard's departure from Tech.  He will never fucking work there again.

I know some moderate / high boosters of Tech basketball who would disagree with you. I’m just going to say the door isn’t completely closed.

  7. You don't think playing for the #1 overall tournament seed, where they get to PICK the Sweet 16 location matters? When one of those locations is Kansas City?

    Okaaay.

I guarantee you that if Houston is the #1 seed, they will pick Kansas City and force KU to Louisville or Las Vegas.

  8. Maybe I just misinterpreted previous posts.  Obviously we have regressed from when Beard coached the team.

But I'm pretty sure the comment was saying that we had specifically regressed in late February - and that other big 12 coaches have now "figured us out".  Based primarily on us losing AT Baylor and TCU.  That is absurd in my opinion. We are basically the same team we have been for the last 2 months, with the same strengths and the same flaws.

It seems like people keep feeling the need to compare us to what we could have been. That is wasted energy IMO.  Beard is gone and he isn't coming back. He absolutely fucked this program and these kids. What we do from here remains to be seen, but I'm tired of talking about him.

It also feels like people are more critical of this team simply to justify that we shouldn't hire Rodney Terry, which I understand.  But... we just knocked off KU and there is less joy in that and actually even some hand wringing that it might lead to us hiring Terry.  If that is the focus, then I think people are going to miss out on a potentially amazing run.

For me, this is the most fun team we have had in over a decade. It is actually the most FUN team for me since probably the DJ Augustin Elite 8 team.  I trust that CDC will make the right decision after the season, so for now I'm just going to enjoy it.  It doesn't mean I have blinders on to our team's flaws, but I try to keep them in perspective vs. all the other teams in CBB. Every team out there has flaws this year and we can beat anyone.

That’s the most retarded statement I’ve ever heard.

Using Massey ratings, y’all have played 8 teams ranked 51 or higher (OUs rank, the worst team in the Big 12).  You went 4-4 in those games.   Nine out of 12 teams in the Pac12 are ranked lower than the Big12s worst team.

It is easy for me to believe you would have 6-8 losses in the Big 12. There is no way you would have been favored in more than 10-12 games.

  10. Gabe Muoneke actually has a great story about Ime. Think it may have been posted here before…

    Spoiler

It’s a trip when you get to know people. Ime was so quiet and I figured he was just some guy who could play with a Nigerian father. Well, folks in S.A., don’t be fooled. That dude in an Afr-I-CAN! I mean damn! The only thing non-African about him is his accent. We went to Nigeria, man… When they brought out the food I figured uh oh… He aint eatin’ th… What the?! Ime was tearing that Fu-fu (thank Jay-Z for everyone knowing what that is now) to shreads. I asked him about his adornment of the vittles. He said that’s all he ate growing up. Imagine my surprise when I saw he must have grown up doing the African ju-jitsu too.

When the National Team went to Algeria for the African Championships in Algiers, every team was on edge because the Top 3 squads got the invite to the World Championships. So after we lost to Angola in the semis and had to play Algeria for the third spot, they knew, we knew, everyone knew they had no shot. First quarter… Tactics. African ball, man. Trust me: as corrupt as can be. Despite all the cheating from the three-man (North African) refereeing crew they just couldn’t beat us. So the coach sent in their best player, who was injured but came in with a purpose. I think his name was Ali Bidane or something. We had the ball out of bounce under. He guarded me. As the ref handed us the ball, he turned, looked at me as if there was not a game going on. And pop! Not an elbow, not even a signature yours truly gutter. He decked me right in the jaw. I couldn’t believe it. And come on. I freely admit when I throw cheap shots. I wouldn’t hide it if I started to. I mean, I’m in the middle of basically middle eastern country playing the local team. I know better (read on to see my contradiction). He nailed me, we turned it over, and yes, my Rodman 101 class did well. I looked up court, saw both refs back and calmly asked him in by most polite French, “Pardon me sir, I object to you striking me.” Next thing you know… Both teams on the court going at it. Wow.

Imagine my surprise! (My cheeks hurt). That wasn’t the real brawl. After we won was the real issue. After the game, they were waiting for us to come out of the locker room. And seriously, I didn’t start it. Kingsley Ogwudire was in front of our team in an all-out tirade in his best Arabic. The next thing you know, there were three Algerian players on him. Everyone was engaged in combat save me, if you can believe it. And lo and ehold… Ime! He was taking people out like in Mortal Kombat. Finish him!Incredible. I was so out of it as I had five guys I was fighting (oh yeah, the crowd jumped in as the fight spilled over to the court of the championship game of Senegal and Angola).

In the middle of the whole thing I heard Ime, literally in mid-swing of another opponent say,”Watch back, Gabe” and he calmly, I mean calmly, smeared a guy who, as I turned to see his warning, jumped from the stands with a chair to probably kill me or knock me out to where the crowd would have. I mean, Ime caught the guy in mid air with a fist and calmly continued his dispatching of oncoming people. He and other guys (yes, me too) were whoopin’ so many people the crowd backed up. True to the letter! But Ime had the most notches by far. As we retreated to the locker room to kind chants of, “You cudly blackies! We highly doubt your ability to leave this gym with lives intact” in French, (it might have been a bad translation) all I could do was marvel at Ime. This guy, I thought, was a quiet American guy was standing there – all his stuff gone (gym bag, wallet, shoes, jersey) – with a stick in his hand we tore off the walls of the locker room in the middle of North Africa quite literally with our lives on the line… laughing. All the while I was texting my wife that I loved her and might have a hard time seeing her again while she was watching the whole incident on BBC News. And Ime… laughing. He is and always will be my 9ja broda. Ime… Wetin happen bros? Abi na notin. Notin dey happen. To this day I don’t know how we got out of there. But that night we ate like kings at the Nigerian Embassy. And Ime was with us… Killing his Fu-fu.

Tell me how I could have seen a thing like that if I had made the NBA out of college! You just can’t make this stuff up.

Today was definitely the best defensive game of the RT tenure.

I generally agree, but KU was also missing a lot of open 3s.  I thought the interior / help defense was very good though. And we were giving a lot more effort rebounding.

  12. It was annoying to hear Dick Vitale talk about how "good guy" Shaka Smart was not liked by Texas brass.  Well dumbass, maybe it is because he adopted a new, boring, unpopular system the second he got here instead of the fun system he was running at VCU.  And maybe he is having success again because he is back to playing the type of basketball that made him successful in the first place.

I'm calling it now.  We will be the #2 seed and Marquette will be the #3 seed in either the South or East regional.  And maybe Tennessee will be the #4 seed for good measure.

Disagree. I have attended every home game this season and watched the rest on TV.  We have regressed.  Other teams have figured us out to a degree but the staff has not done anything to counter it.

Still think we have regressed?  It is strange that these other Big-12 teams figured us out but Bill Self didn't.

Or maybe we were just playing REALLY good teams on the road in the toughest conference in the last 20 years.

Losing happens in college basketball.  Especially on the road to decent teams. Just today the following higher ranked teams lost:

    • #2 Alabama (at #24 Aggy)
    • #3 Kansas (to us)
    • #7 Baylor (at home to UR Iowa State)
    • #11 K-State (at UR West Virginia)
    • #12 Tennessee (at UR Auburn)
    • #20 Providence (at home to UR Seton Hall)
    • #22 TCU (at UR OU)

I feel as good about our chances in the tournament as I have in at least 10 years.  We have never had a team this experienced or this deep. Sure we have glaring issues, but every team in the field does as well.

  14. I guess time will tell, but I just don’t think we are playing that bad. We are generally winning when we are favored and losing when we are underdogs. We have had some impressive beat downs in the last couple of weeks including destroying ISU (likely 6 seed) and WV (likely 11 seed).
I doubt we are an underdog in the tournament until the Elite 8 or even the Final Four. We won’t play in another hostile away game (like Tech) all season. We won’t face a team as hard as KU or BU until the Final Four.

I don’t think teams are figuring us out. I think we are playing away games against freaking solid teams and losing. It happens I college basketball. Hell, TCU beat KU by 17 in Lawrence. And KU could win the title.
I’m not that worried about the first tourney game. This team isn’t a one and done. Especially not as a 2 or 3 seed.

  15. Well, those people would be idiots then.  Again, only a complete moron would think that Terry will be as good as Beard, who is probably one of the top 3-5 coaches in all of college basketball.

It is possible for all these things to be true at the same time:

    • Our defense actually got worse
    • Our competition got better, so our numbers made our defensive slip look even worse than it was
    • Rodney Terry has done an amazing job to right the ship
    • Rodney Terry will never be as good as Chris Beard especially defensively
    • Rodney Terry might do better at Texas (even adjusted for the talent level here) than he did at Fresno or UTEP because his intangibles translate better here
    • Or he might regress to his career mean

  16. I don't really think we are regressing. We are just playing the hard part of the schedule.  I bet if we had played all these games at the start of the conference slate we would have fared about the same.  Since Jan 30 we have played:

    • at #2 KU - Loss
    • #8 Baylor - Win
    • at #8 Baylor - Loss
    • at #13 K-State - Win
    • at #19 TCU - Loss

Outside of the Tech game, we haven't really lost any games that I EXPECTED to win.

countless people here wanting him to be our next HC, and insisting that he's doing just as good of a job as chris beard

Not sure who exactly you are referring to, but I can't recall anyone saying he is doing just as good as Beard.  Link or quote would be nice.

My point all along has been that I want the season to play out before I make a decision on whether I would support hiring Terry or not.  I have liked a lot of what he has done. And there are some areas where he is CLEARLY inferior to Beard.

I'm still not ready to say "Don't hire him", but I'm definitely trending in that direction.
