The thing about this team is that we have plenty of firepower if somebody is having a bad night. Carr, Hunter, Allen, Rice or even Morris can all take over a game and score 20+. If someone is playing bad, they need to just get it to whoever is playing good. Carr is really the only one who plays hero ball, and most of the time I don’t have a problem with it.
Great great win.

I will pause my judgement on Terry until after the season. But my bias is that we can do significantly better.

Can we please change this dumb title? For fuck's sake, the guy won a Naismith Award for our university and has donated $3M to the program on top of that.

To be clear, I would hate for us to hire Cal.

Sounds exactly like the guy we should hire
Well... we were sick of Rick Barnes by the end of his career at Texas. Pretty sure there were some boos in the last few years.
Change of scenery and he is back to being the Rick Barnes we all loved for most of his career here.
Given Calipari's success over the whole of his career, it is possible he will have a solid rebound somewhere.
-
Hmmm. So when does the 3rd year start? After the season? Or at his hiring anniversary? I assume we will be waiting until after the season, so it could be as low as $2.5M.
-
Yeah that is my concern too. Maybe we could keep some of the rainmakers who are currently on staff.

I'm liking the thought of Tommy Lloyd the more I look at him. While he will only have 2 years of major head coaching experience, he is crushing it at Arizona - a school that historically cares about basketball more than Texas. He also has 20 years of coaching experience under Mark Few... yet is only 48 yrs old. He is currently making $2.9M and his buyout is only $5M. I think there is a good chance we could money whip him.
Last year Arizona finished 33-4 and won the Pac 12, finishing #2 in the final AP poll. This year they are 14-2 and ranked 9th. They are also 7th in the country in PPG, 9th in offensive efficiency, 2nd in assists per game, 10th in fast break points. He would bring an exciting brand of basketball to the Moody Center.
I think he is a lower risk hire than Calipari or Dennis Gates.

That doesn't change the fact that a rivalry doesn't exist unless both teams in question consider it a rivalry.
Again, I think it depends on where you live in the state. If you are a UT alum in Midland, Abilene, El Paso or Amarillo, I suspect that you feel like UT vs. Tech is a rivalry in a more tangible way than say UT vs. Arkansas. If you live in Beaumont, not so much.
I grew up in the panhandle, so admittedly I'm biased and want to beat Tech more than a lot of my friends.

THEY cared a shit ton about it.
That does not a rivalry make. Or else we'd have rivals all over the Big 12 and the state of Texas because THEY care more about beating us.
Sorry, we may be stuck playing ISU, KSU, WV, etc., but they are not our rivals.
I think that is over stating things. We have been playing Tech in football since 1928 and in basketball since 1958. In hoops especially, the games have always been competitive, as Tech has beaten us 8 out of the last 10 games.
They were also one of the few old SWC teams that joined us in the original Big-12 and there was talk that they would join us if we went to the PAC-10. In fairness, maybe that actually kept us from joining the Pac-10.
Everyone knows and works with a bunch of Tech fans, especially in the western portion of the state. It isn't the same as ISU or WV.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I thought Chris Beard coming to Texas really elevated the UT-Tech rivalry in hoops. They have a good program and cared a shit-ton about beating us (see them buying out the Erwin Center last year). The game in Lubbock was one of the most electric environments in all of CBB last year. I think that would have continued if Beard had stayed. Oh well. Who cares now.

I like Joe Golding. He did amazingly well at ACU. He is also doing better at UTEP than Rodney Terry ever did. And he is 10 years younger. At some point he is going to get a job at a major program. He is basically Chris Beard lite. He would be a risky hire for Texas though.
Under no circumstances should we hire Terry. That is the one thing I know for sure.
As I look at the best college coaches, there are very few young guys. That is one thing that sucks so bad about losing Beard. I don’t want a dude in his 60s winding out his career. I want a hungry coach in his 40s or early 50s who will be here a while.
That leaves us with: Mike Cronin (51), Chris Holtmann (51), Tommy Lloyd (48), Royal Ivey (41)

Do they sell beer/whiskey?
Lollll. Imagine asking this question about the Moody Center.
Not trying to be a dick, but it is like the place was designed first and foremost to sell booze.

On the plus side, our offense is looking pretty good. What is our projected final wins/losses now?
-
Sometimes the other team is just on fire. No coaching or defense had anything to do with KState going 31 of 33 from the line. If they shoot their season average of 70% we probably win.
Not even counting them going 56% from 3 when their average is 33%.

Still a lot of basketball to play… Hopefully they cool off.

One thing this has thought me is that CDC does not run a leaky organization. Respek. Old administrations would have been leaking info like a mofo.

Syracuse still can be the premiere basketball school for NYC area recruits. Put someone like Calipari there and they could dominate. Their last title isn’t that long ago.
Regarding Tech vs OU, I guess a case could be made for Tech. They have shown a willingness to win and have hired some decent coaches in the last 20 years. And I think they could do better in the Big 12 than OU will in the SEC. Call it a wash I guess.
-
I also think the Big12 is still going to be one of the premier college basketball conference even with UT and OU gone. Houston and Cinci make it a wash. BYU can be good as well.

If Ohio State and Syracuse jobs both came open, is the consensus that a top coach would take the Ohio State job? I can live with that.
-
In the era of NIL, I think the big, rich schools like UT, Michigan, Florida, Ohio State move way up the list of desirability. Right now if you are a great coach, and you can coach at Michigan or Indiana, I think you take the Michigan job.
I think this would be my ranking of job attractiveness if the job "suddenly" came open.
- UNC - Jordan, Nike, history, fan support, money, class
- Kansas - Passionate, knowledgeable fanbase
- Kentucky - Biggest, most rabid fanbase who will do anything to win, but unrealistic
- UCLA - Dominate the west coast and live like a king in LA
- Duke - Money, history, huge NBA alumni base, fans (but who knows if this will hold)
- Texas - Money, new arena, low expectations, 'cruits
- Michigan
- Indiana
- Louisville
- Arizona
- Florida
- Syracuse
- Michigan State
- Ohio State
- Baylor
- Cincinnati
- UCONN
- Villanova
- Illinois
- Gonzaga
- Arkansas
- Oklahoma
- Tennessee
- Oregon
- Maryland
- NC State
- Mizzou
- Oklahoma State
- Texas Tech
- Memphis
- LSU
- Iowa State

Gonzaga as a top 5 job immediately discredits any list. Baylor is a vastly better job if both came open tomorrow.

If I dated a Lubbock 9 and then moved to Austin where she was downgraded to an Austin 3, I’d want to choke someone too.
Tell me you haven’t spent much time at Tech without telling me you haven’t spent much time at Tech.

I saw that Marquette is top 10 in fast break points. It is maddening. I will never understand why he completely changed his philosophy here.
