  1. To me, the biggest difference is that we are scoring EARLY in the shot clock.  Even when we were up 20, the team was still trying to run in transition and score early.  It is so refreshing to not just go into clock burning mode but keep the offensive pressure up.  That attitude is out of the KU and UNC playbook.  If they can score 100 on you, they are going to do it. How many leads have we lost in years past because we went conservative?

Mouton was a badass ROLE player.

I'm going to have to go ahead and sort of... disagree with you on that.

Mouton was returning fresh off making an ALL-REGION team in the 2003 NCAA Tourney.  Role players don't make all-region teams. Damn near every one of them ended up being high draft picks, many with big NBA Careers.  If you get a player of this caliber coming back for another year, you already have a huge building block.

Out of the 25 All-Region Players that year you had:

    • Carmelo Anthony - #3 Draft Pick
    • Dwyane Wade - #5 Draft Pick
    • Kirk Hinrich - #7 Draft Pick
    • TJ Ford - #8 Draft Pick
    • Nick Collison - #12 Draft Pick
    • Emeka Okafor - #2 Draft Pick
    • Luke Walton - #32 Draft Pick
    • Hakim Warrick - #19 Draft Pick
    • Steve Novak - #32 Draft Pick
    • Paul Davis - #34 Draft Pick
    • Keith Langford - 2x All Big 12
    • Marquis Daniels - 2x All SEC, 10 Year NBA Vet
    • Jason Gardner - 3x All- Pac 12
    • Marquis Estill - All SEC

Quite a collection of role players at the college level.

Mouton was one of my favorite players ever at UT.  He was the co-MVP in 2003 along with TJ Ford.  F the haters. I'll ride or die with my guy all day every day.  Dude could score the rock and he was a winner.

Now... back to talking about 2023

  3. Mouton was a bad-ass. The year before he was 2nd Team All-Big 12 and made the NCAA Tourney all-region team.

Ivey was the returning Big-12 Defensive PoY (by some publications)

James Thomas was a returning 2nd Team All Big12 / 1st Team All Defense player

Boddicker was a heavily contributing former McDonald’s All-American senior.

Buckman was another McDonald’s All-American coming off a 1st team Big12 Freshman season.

I don’t think making a Sweet 16 with a squad like that is overachieving.  Any team that has two McDonalds All-Americans on it that returns 75% of their points and minutes should do pretty well.

Now Barnes should get credit for recruiting and retaining those players. And for their development. But not the “shocking” Sweet 16.

Is that Wacker injury the biggest what if in Texas basketball history?  Wife (gf at the time) and I didn’t there until after the injury had happened.  Gotta love the old HOT Coliseum with the tartan court on a rodeo floor.

I'm late to the party, but for me, the biggest what if is... What if PJ Tucker had returned for his senior year at Texas?  He was only drafted in the middle of the 2nd round, so it isn't like he was a high draft pick.

If he returned, it would have made a huge difference since the 2006-2007 team was one of the youngest in NCAA history.  He was a beast and previous Big-12 PoY.  I would have loved seeing him play with Durant and Co.  We could have moved Durant to the 3 and gone with:

    • PG - Augustin
    • SG - AJ Abrams
    • SF - Kevin Durant
    • PF - Damion James
    • C - PJ Tucker
    • Bench:  Justin Mason, Connor Atchley, etc.

Then you could bring Mason off the bench and sub for any of Durant, James or Tucker.  Man I would have enjoyed seeing that.

anyone who averages 1.8 tourney wins per season over a decade at one school cannot be considered "a really really bad tourney coach" by anyone who's being objective. i'll bet the list of coaches who've ever pulled that off during any 10 year stretch is a who's who of CBB coaching royalty.

But a big part of that tournament success is because he is a really good regular season coach.  If you go in as a 1 seed, you better win AT LEAST two games or you have really F'ed up. With two wins, you just beat at best a top~70 team (probably worse actually) and a top-35 team.  Congrats, you must be a great tourney coach.

Rick's best 10-year period was 2002 - 2011.  If you view his tournament success as achieving or failing vs. the expectations of his seed, you get the following:

    • 2002 - 6 seed - 2 wins (over-achieved)
    • 2003 - 1 seed - 4 wins (met expectation)
    • 2004 - 3 seed - 2 wins (met expectation)
    • 2005 - 8 seed - 0 wins (failed)
    • 2006 - 2 seed - 3 wins (met expectation)
    • 2007 - 4 seed - 1 win (failed)
    • 2008 - 2 seed - 3 wins (met expectation)
    • 2009 - 8 seed - 0 wins (failed)
    • 2010 - 4 seed - 1 win (failed)
    • 2011 - 11 seed - 0 wins (failed)

So you have one year where he beat expectations vs. 5 where he failed.  That isn't a great tourney record IMO.

Didja catch the part where most of the people calling out the bullshit are…..practicing Christians themselves?
That’s the part that the “ZOMG AMERICAN CHRISTIANS ARE THE MOST RELIGIOUSLY PERSECUTED PEOPLE EVER!” miss. Most of the people calling them out aren’t calling them out for actual faith positions. We’re calling them out for being cruel fucking assholes. And particularly, being such assholes and then having the nerve to put up “but I’m a Christian!” as a shield for being fucking assholes.

    Still nailed it!

KenPom has the Big 12 and SEC as the two best CBB conferences in 2022. So it's a step down but not a gigantic one.

Regardless of what it was like in the past, the Big 12 is about to get a lot weaker IMO.  If you look at last year, the worst Big-12 team according to KenPom was West Virginia at #66.  And 7 /  10 were in the top-35 nationally.  There were zero games easy games. Was anyone remotely relaxed about playing WV or K-State, even at home?  And you had to play ALL the extremely good teams twice.

Now, they add much easier games against #58 BYU, #101 Cincinnati and #104 UCF. And because they will probably be in divisions, you may only have to play Kansas, Baylor, Houston or Tech only once.

In the future SEC, it will be so much easier only having to face Kentucky or Tennessee or Arkansas once.

Pomeroy had the following rankings at the end of the 2022 Season:

    Future Big 12 had:

    • #2 Houston
    • #3 Kansas
    • #4 Baylor
    • #7 Texas Tech
    • #26 TCU
    • #34 Oklahoma State
    • #43 Iowa St.
    • #58 BYU
    • #61 K-State
    • #66 West Virginia
    • #101 Cincinnati
    • #104 UCF

    Future SEC had

    • #6 Kentucky
    • #9 Tennessee
    • #12 Auburn
    • #15 Texas
    • #18 Arkansas
    • #21 LSU
    • #28 Alabama
    • #33 Aggy
    • #49 Mississippi State
    • #59 Florida
    • #64 Vanderbilt
    • #99 South Carolina
    • #108 Mississippi
    • #137 Missouri
    • #219 Georgia

Future Big 12 still looks a good bit better.  Most of those teams have fans that are passionate about basketball.  Not so much in the SEC.

  8. I think the Nets could win 60 games.  (They could also win <40 games).  But if they actually get it together and play team basketball, I think they have the most talented roster in the NBA.  They have people who can create. They have tons of shooters.  Imagine this lineup...

    • PG - Kyrie
    • SG - Seth Curry
    • SF - Joe Harris
    • PF - Durant
    • C - Ben Simmons

There isn't a team who could trot out more great shooters and have the team make sense like this.  Even though it is small ball, you still have two solid 6'10 players on the floor.

People mock Ben Simmons shooting, but 61% FT is still in the same range as Looney (60%), Wiggins (63%) and Draymond (66%).   61% is terrible for a point guard, but acceptable if he is playing the Draymond role.

Then off the bench they have TJ Warren, who could score 20 points on any given night.  Nic Claxton should continue to improve and played decently last year. I'm sure he will start most of the time.  Royce O'Neale and Markieff Morris (who I hate) should add toughness. Patty Mills can lead the 2nd unit and also brings shooting. Cam Thomas will also be improved.

This is also a team that could play great defense.  Imagine this lineup:  Ben Simmons, Royce O'Neal, Kevin Durant, Markieff Morris,  Nic Claxon.  That is a nasty defensive team.

Ultimately this is a team with 3 potential All-NBA players - all still close to their prime. I think they get past their issues and have a good season.

  9. The answer is Aggy and it isn’t close.

Also hate TCU. Annoying rich kids are annoying.

I’m not a big ACU fan for a variety of reasons. Them beating us in the tourney was a low point in sports for me.

I like Tech. Always loved them putting it to Aggy. Have a bunch of Tech relatives and am from the panhandle. I also like the hoops rivalry with them that has developed. They HATE us for taking Beard.  When we go to the SEC, I hope they find a good home.

I also like Rice and their antics.
