1. It sure feels like it.   Pretty fun to shoot and feels compact in the right ways without very much recoil.   I honestly don't notice hardly a difference between this at 12.5" or a 16" rifle.
Handcruser Thoughts on the PA SLX MD-25 Gen II red dot vs their 1-6x24mm SFP Rifle Scope - Illuminated ACSS Aurora 5.56?  Both are $199 right now.

I’d go lpvo so the 1x6 if it has the cap for motac you can add to it.

That cap allows it to have an auto on feature - meaning the second it senses movement it turns on.
2. Still have some things to add but this is my new 12.5" MK4 Banshee.   I've put a about 200 rounds through it so far.  For those on the north side of Houston, I highly recommend checking out the BTO range in Conroe on 105.  Kind of a pain to get to but worth it because they have a 100 yard indoor rifle range.  They have a decent amount of rentals and even a full auto Sten, MP5 and Grease Gun.

8t or new primary arms lpvo with motac cap.
3. Curious what your thoughts are on mounting height.   This is obviously kind of a personal choice and is based on what is most comfortable for the shooter but as I look at optics there is some clear division between height.
Took the new Banshee out to the range today.  It was pleasantly surprising how little recoil I felt considering it's only 12.5"  I ended up putting around 125 rounds through it with several different types/brands of ammo that I wanted to run through it and all of them were pretty much conistent.   Only shot at 50 yards because I was using iron sights and there was a fairly large crowd of fudds on the 100 yard range that were being fudds.   When I unpacked, one of them wandered over and asked what I was shooting because it was clearly a lot smaller than all of their bolt action stuff.  After I told him what it was, one of the other ones said something to the effect that it was a girls gun.   I came back with "Well, I have daughters so they'll get better at it than I will."
Overall, I was pretty happy with how it shot.  My spreads were decent but I need to put a lot more ammo through it.   Hopefully I'll be able to get out tomorrow again.   Shooting outdoors kind of sucked because the humidity was shitty.
Put another 100 rounds through the PDP at 25 yards and it was fine as usual.  I definitely need to swap out the stock Walther sights for something else.

Fuck that guy. I hate people like that - and it’s a NATO caliber.

Back to optics. Sans magnification id look at Romeo 8t (mainly because side I want one lol) or perhaps a Holosun combo or Holosun 512. Lots of options here - I think eotech is overpriced.

You can also look at an lpvo like the vortex viper or sig tango msr. I like my viper a lot and will probably upgrade one day to a nightforce.

I’m probably forgetting a bunch of things.

AR536 from Burris would be great. I have one on my hog gun - don’t make the 5x anymore but they make the 3x (332) I think.

4. Thanks Cruiser. The nightstand gun is just a bare bones Ruger SR9. I've never run an optic on a pistol before so any thoughts on that are greatly appreciated.
The majority of my shooting is at the deer lease but I'm in DFW so I just need a find a place around here to try out some of the guns.

Gritr might be a good choice.

Shoot them and then decide.

Optics take some practice but once you get it you’ll never go back.

Take an optics course.

5. Need the surly thoughts on a new EDC. My brother just bought a Canik mete MC9 and that's nice little pistol for the price especially with that trigger. I'm currently in between going with the Canik and a Holosun optic or looking at the myriad of the Sig 365 options. I handled the XMacro yesterday and really liked that but the price point is significantly higher. Is this a buy once cry once or are there any options I should be looking at?

Well, here goes.

Both are great guns. I dislike both.

Cabins have a weird feel to me and 365’s I don’t like the recoil. It’s not too much, it’s just weird. I also don’t like the sound they make - I can always tell when one is being shot on the range.

Both are great reliable weapons.

What is your nightstand gun? I like to deploy the same functionality across multiple situations.

In the striker fired world, I’d shoot the following too and see what you like-
Hellcat
Hellcat pro
43x MOS

Stream light and Holosun would be my picks on the apparent budget we’re looking at if you feel inclined.

6. Anybody use a speedloader for their rifles?   I have one for my pistol but thinking about grabbing one for the AR.  Thoughts on the Maglula rocker style versus the Striplula or ETS types?
Going to range tomorrow with the new Banshee.   I put some Magpul flip up sights on it to start.   Going to see how it shoots and then start looking at optics/red dots.

Let us know if you want some direction on optics.
7. Picked up some Magpul sights today.   A light is probably next then eventually an optic and a can.

Streamlight and sure fire are the dominant players here.

Sure fire is 3x the cost but not 3x the light. Their pricing is criminal. I put a streamlight on mine.

8. Yeah I stopped following it altogether. I still had a braced shorter barrel that I was specifically told on this forum to keep as is and not take the deal. Doesn’t matter anyways, tragic boating accident took em all.

Smart man
9. Ordered it yesterday as a celebratory gift to myself for finding a job.
One thing I can't figure out is whether this will be considered a pistol or SBR.   On the CMMG site, the version with the "Ripbrace" is listed as a pistol but the "Ripstock" version is a rifle.   What I ordered is supposed to have the brace and should therefore be considered the pistol version but the seller is listing as a rifle.  I was prepared to fill out Form 1 since it's a 12.5" .223/5.56 caliber weapon but I guess I'll just have to wait until it arrives to see what's what.
I have all sorts of other things to pick out now.

You shouldn’t need to form 1 it if it has the brace.

What else do you need?
10. Just found out my eform1 for my pistol braced SBR was denied.  How do I find out why it was denied?  Tried to call, and after an hour on hold they told me to go to their awful website.  I have not been able to find an explanation for the denial there as of yet.  Any ideas?

Never had any background check issues when purchasing.

Guess it might not be needed for TX in regards to the pistol brace, but still would like to figure out the issued before purchasing a can.

*never received a letter of disapproval nor an email

Probably something technical. Did you send in multiple pics?
11. UPDATE!!!   I got an offer.    I'll be working as the retirement plan administrator for a mid-sized employer based here in Houston with employees spread across the country.  It's a nice bump in comp over my prior role.
This is not the job I detailed above.  I last talked with them two weeks ago and was told what the hold up is.  I'm 95% sure that their offer is going to come in below this one.   I think my work here is done.
Talk about a wave of relief.   Nerves really hit right after the offer call.  Wow, just wow.

That’s awesome man. Congrats!
12. I am.
I might wander down to Collector's Firearms soon and see what all they have on the shelves when it comes to used stuff.  Their website sucks ass trying to narrow down what looks decent but they do usually have a nice selection to look over.
I'm not quite in the "build it" head space yet.  I'm might get there but for now off the shelf with easier add-ons or  mods (grips, sights, optics, lights, stock) are more my speed.  Then I'll move on to triggers and other stuff.)

If you walk in to a shop they can build it for you right there on the spot.

I don’t like collectors - way overpriced.

What is your budget
What about LaRue?
Aren’t they on the preferred list these days?

They make nice guns.

I wouldn’t buy one.

YMMV.

13. Plinking mostly but something to have at home in case I need to fight aliens or orcs.
I will definitely be getting a suppressor so the CMMG or one of the shorter FNs are attractive in order to keep overall length down.
I will check out PMS.  There are several other makers in that range that I don't know a whole lot about and haven't been around like the more "legacy" brands.   Places like PSA, POF, etc.

PSA pass
Pof hard pass

Used dd pdw should be on your list. I buy used when I can.

Build your own (have it built - most assemble for free) it takes about 20 minutes and it’s all ready to go.

If 556 12” barrel is where I’d be if using it for defense and putting a suppressor on it

If 300bo 9-10” barrel.

If you want to tuck the suppressor in that’s what I prefer

You in Houston?

14. Curious on opinions about 3 completely different rifles:
Springfield Saint Victor 16" barrel AR-15.   This is is the only one I have shot and it was a nice gun.  I can get a good deal on one ($890).
FN SRP G2P AR-15 in either 16" or  14.7".   There's also an 11.5" G2 here in Houston (allegedly) that is an interesting SBR.  I haven't shot any FN rifles but this line has good reviews.
CMMG Banshee 12.5" barrel.  Another SBR that is attractive because of the length.
Thoughts?

Cmmg+FN > SA

What do you want to do with the gun?

You should be adding PWS to the equation - they use a long strike piston and they’re fantastic. $1200ish. I have one - just a great shooter.

FN makes great AR barrels. Like - great.

Tell me more.
15. Thx for the help.  I spend time online and at the gun stores and the general consensus that I came away with was that a .270 was a rifle that would work best with what I would be shooting ( mostly deer ) and still have the ability to bring down anything else in North America if I wished.  It is my first hunting rifle and I wanted to have something that would perform well and last.  I ended up buying the Tikka t3X Lite Stainless.  Now I need to find some glass for it and sight it in.

Thanks for the help!

Let’s talk glass. What are you thinking? What’s the budget?
16. Right now I'm just looking for some good range ammo to shoot.

There is some PMC and S&B around that same price on ammoseek. S&B is great stuff. PMC is very good too. I’d go that route.

17. I'm trying to buy some .308 ammo for my SFAR. I'm always looking for a deal and know a lot of the sites to check. A lot of the vendors are selling cheaper ammo made by companies I have never heard of (Bullets 1st, Igman, Veterans Ammo) and some from overseas makers (GGG). But seeing Brat's picture of the split in half .357 makes me nervous about buying from a manufacturer I'm not familiar with. Does anyone have any insight or sources that list the quality of ammo offered? Other than social media, which is too easily manipulated.

Igman is ok.

What kind of bullet are you looking for?
