Is ECMO a vent? Seems like something even more extreme than a ventilator.
extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. an external heart-lung machine, basically.

Our kids are going to be dumbfounded that we burned fossil fuels instead of saving them to make plastics and other products we can't get elsewhere easily.

God dammit. This also has closed a big part of the Pacific Crest Trail, which is a big blow to me personally.
I have a buddy doing it this year. He had to hitch around it. Pictures looked nuts.

100 people on vents. Jesus.

@Anastasis what would be the timeline to get that approved? As it already has EUA, would this be something we could see roll out in days or weeks, or will the process take months?

I did my research.Y’all google “covid vaccine third” and make the decision that’s right for you. Lots of really recent info out there.
For me there was no doubt, that’s where this is headed
I got Pfizer #3 today, 5 months after getting #2.
Yeah I’m going to be looking for moderna #3 in the next month or so. A buddy is a Pfizer breakthrough here in Austin. He’s mid 30s, runs 30-40 miles per week. He’s been down for 2 days with bad flu symptoms. He’s glad he got the vax but he was one of the early March cohort.

I thought he admitted he was a chiropractor early on in the pandemic

Well there you go.

I'm still waiting for the numbers to shake out as we have more data points, but I'm not that surprised it's hovering around there right now. Austin had a large vaccine uptake relatively early. I bet if we saw detailed numbers those breakthrough hospitalizations would lean super old and in Austin area proper, with relatively early vax dates.
One of the docs or somebody posted some early antibody data on one of the covid threads a few days back, basically the olds (that had first vax priority) have a slightly more muted antibody response, and then those antibody numbers start to fall faster than younger individuals with better immune systems as time passes. Hence the thought that we'll have a need for boosters, even without Delta and similar popping up.

I need to do my yearly top dress and I also wanted to try to minimally level out some spots in the turf of my yard. St. Augustine. @cactusflinthead should I wait until end of August/early September? Seems like we have a good bit of growing season left to help with turf development.
I'm in SW Austin and thought to have several yards of Austin Soil Amendment delivered, I did straight Dillo Dirt last Fall as the yard had been neglected for a while and needed a good bit of nitrogen, but the sales guy tried to talk me into the Professional Mix to help with the leveling. Whittlesey also have Lightning Mix, which looks to be granite sand + screened compost. Not sure which to go with.

An friend of mine gave this excuse, nevermind that she's divorced with 2 kids, dating a dude with 3 kids from a previous marriage, and a year away from 40. And not surly 1%.

Finally opened up the John J Bowman Single Barrel last night. It's really good, considering it was MSRP of $45 or so. I'm sure I'll never find it on a shelf again.

Does anyone know why they stopped the game to talk to Cascante? I wondered it his bra monitor was picking up something unusual, but I’ve never seen anything like that.
No idea. They motioned to his head and it kinda looked like a concussion interview, but I don't remember him taking a knock.
And we're terrible in the box. We started the game brightly because Seattle obviously hadn't scouted us very well. After the defense saw the first few runs in the box they knew exactly where our guys would go. I dunno if it's down to the players or the coach, but the movement in the final third sucks. Similarly, if we don't work the ball to the wings we have a real problem even getting into the final third. We can't pass our way into it, and we damn sure don't have someone who can consistently beat his man off the dribble in the middle of the field. Fagundez is a nice player but he'd be much better if the defense had more to worry about.
We need help, quickly.

I'm sure you could at our rural HEB. My wife and I took the J&J, because it is a viral vector vaccine. Not sold on mRNAs at this time. I just don't know enough about them. If I had COVID, it was asymptomatic. Wife was down for about 4 days. If the symptoms are less severe, we are willing to take the chance on reinfection.
CHIEF
Dunno how old you are but considering J&J does poorly against Delta, and the mRNA ones do fairly well, you might reconsider this stance.

Because that makes it ok to attend a Klan rally? Obviously there wouldn't be a rally if half the participants didn't show up. Except for the math involved.
These assholes will get their day in court to try to raise reasonable doubt about entrapment by the FBI. The fact that anyone thought it was an even halfway decent idea to go after a sitting fucking governor in modern day America is astounding. Maybe I'm giving the feds too much credit before the trial even starts, but when you start talking about kidnapping and assassinating state governors I'm not going to be surprised when the FBI throws the proverbial kitchen sink at the investigation. I would say reasonable Americans would expect them to do just that.

The doctors in my school community seem to think they will have access in October or November.
Talked to my kid's pediatrician this morning at a well check. She's frustrated as hell, and doesn't expect anything until December for the next age cohort. Hope yours have a better finger on the pulse.

We were never going to get a double dose regimen administered world wide at sufficient rates in a small enough time frame to keep this from becoming endemic. Realistically by the time we knew it was a problem in early December it was probably already too late. That's not human stupidity (although our lagging vaccination rate in the US is stupid), it's a function of a connected world and how vaccines are manufactured and administered.
I still think it's crazy for anyone who might travel anywhere to not want their kids vacc'd ASAP. The twitter thread linked above laid it out pretty simply: you're going to be exposed. If you're vacc'd and have a breakthrough infection, it'll almost certainly be mild (~750 deaths in the US out of 161 million fully vacc'd) unless you're already seriously ill. It doesn't matter if it's a gas station in rural Arkansas or a beach in Mexico, there's going to be exposure to covid moving forward. Limiting the severity and the number of infections across age groups seems like a no brainer to me.

I don't think it really matters. There are going to be places all over the world that never get to the percent of population vaccinated that the USA had months ago. So the virus is going to mutate and spread on this planet. And because the world is so interconnected any new variant is going to come here anyway.
We cannot lock down for this shit again. Let people who refuse to vaccinate take their medicine. Most are probably on the younger side and their risk of death and hospitalization is low anyway.
I agree with this almost completely. Only thing I'd disagree with is that the "refuse to vaccinate" crowd skews younger, my anecdotal experience is a little heavier on the middle-aged and older segment of society being vaccine hesitant. In looking at the CDC data, you're right though. Vaccinations have really slowed progressively for all of the younger cohorts.
