Supposedly 60% of people wearing a mask 60% of the time can get the R value under 1.  That could be huge.

Also there's some people in the know who are pretty optimistic about the vaccines.  As in possibly to the masses early 2021 and to healthcare workers earlier.  That would be a fucking game changer...the likes of which I may not have ever seen in my life.  Stop the madness!

I agree not for the masses.  But first quarter 2021 for the masses would be game changer.  And that's realistic right now based on where we are in trials with the 10 or so vaccines that have been approved for human testing.

Yeah, I'm not gonna be first in line for the fast-tracked vaccine.  Willing to take my chances for another year to see how that  plays out over a cycle or two.

  2. I was able to download the ios app, log initially using my AT&T/DTV acct and create an HBO Max account in the ios app.  Then I downloaded the app on the TV and logged in (via the browser on my phone) with the ID I just created.   I tried to get the TV app to validate just using the ATT ID but it didn't work until I went back into the ios app and created the HBO Max acct. there.

AISD released a bunch of info in email this morning, @Larry T. Spider might be able to expand a little bit on it.

    Their "what-if" scenarios are:

    • What if we need to start sooner?
    • What if we have to start later and can't stick to our beginning date?
    • What about a combination of those options because we start on time, but have to include breaks in case of further outbreaks?

Their "high-level models" they are looking at are:

    • Model 1: A face-to-face model with an early start and built-in extended breaks* (August–June).
    • Model 2: A face-to-face model with a delayed start and built-in extended breaks* (September–July).
    • Model 3: A blended face-to-face and distance learning model.

*The extended breaks may include intersessions where we connect with specific students who need additional instructional time.

They have to get the face-to-face stuff in there, to get grades from kids and catch those kids up who struggle.  And unfortunately, it's not one particular age-range - they need to make sure the elementary-aged kids are not falling behind (it would be disastrous for a lot of the young kids to fall behind and could set them back a year or two), and they've got to make sure the high school kids are as ready as can be for graduating.

My kids' school in DFW is going with model 1 but without the extended breaks already scheduled.  If they end up not needing them, they'll end school early.

The I'm an American by God crowd and their "why do you hate the constitution?" retort is more than I can handle.  Outside of them being a pain in the ass, I really don't see why anyone would choose to not wear a mask in the current environment.  No one is mandating it until the end of time. To me it really boils down to we can sit around the house for several months and continue to watch the economy die or we can wear a mask, practice some measure of social distancing and protection of the most vulnerable while resuming as much of our normal routines as possible.  Yes, some of the early doomsday predictions were way off base, and now it's unknowable what the outcome of things would have been if the lockdown had not occurred so we find ourselves in this place of people who think the whole thing is a hoax or powergrab (by whom?) and others who think no one should leave their house until there is a vaccine.  As someone said earlier the extremists on both ends are not helpful to the ultimate cause of people making sensible informed decisions and complying with the necessary guidelines when there are actual hotspots in the future.

Well, it certainly sounds like you hate the Constitution. Probably also hate puppies.

My brother died yesterday. He had a massive heart attack but it was preceded by him having a fever and a bad cough. We do not know yet if he had it but it seems quite possible, as he was a truck driver, working through all of this, all along the eastern part of the country. The worst part for me, other than losing my brother, is that I will not be able to go to his visitation or funeral. I will just be at his burial, keeping my distance from everyone else. I am one of those higher risk people. I have been cooped up in my house, other than sitting on my porch some, got the last two months, as precaution.

Fuck.  So sorry to hear this.

I mentioned it after the first couple, it felt like Roiland and Harmon were going out of their way to make a specific point to all the toxic fascist nerd fucks that were bitching at them and women and the regular fans.

The first episode was one thing but I felt like 3-4 of this seasons episodes were pointed at telling the fans to back up but it wasn’t as fun as it has been for the rest of us...

I guess I missed something.  What are you talking about?

Well, I'm firmly in the camp of having absolutely no fucking clue what the right thing to do is anymore.  I appreciate how political all of this nonsense has become, leaving citizens to have to just guess for themselves based on mounds of conflicting "expert" opinions out there.  The data is unreliable, and changes based on source.  The guidelines for safety vary city by city.

I don't trust any politicians' motives, regardless of party, and it just makes practical sense to assume that any move is politically based and not based on the health and well-being of the citizenry.  Those blindly following bureaucrats because they have a medical degree may want to think that one through as well, although I acknowledge that their baseline trustworthiness starts much higher than an elected official.  Like anyone else in any line of work, however, they're subject to tunnel vision and I think we're seeing a certain amount of it right now.

Ultimately, I don't have a fucking clue what the right thing to do is, and that is not a position I have ever found myself in.  The biggest impact of this virus for me, personally, is the loss of decisiveness I've always had before.

Like everyone else, I'm tired as fuck of sitting at home, and I can see the toll it's taking on my wife and kids.  Natural instincts tell you that something has to change on that front to protect your family.  But then you read another article from an expert or idiotic governor spewing doomsday rhetoric and you second guess yourself.  I don't mind, and in fact prefer, a scenario where I'm left to determine for myself what is best for me and my family.  I just wish everyone else would shut the fuck up so I can think.

    Stop listening to them?

I have a contact in the intelligence community as well.  talked to him last week. he said that Wuhan is worse than reported but that there is no chance that the US has any chance to be like Wuhan.  From all their information the worst is over.

I also have a contact in the intelligence community and he says "The crow flies at sunset.  The crow flies at sunset. The child's pencil is broken. The child's pencil is broken'  Take that as you will but its pretty clear whats going on.

I don’t know how often, or if only by request, screeners are tested, but to put this in perspective there are 47,000 TSA screeners.  Google says total employees are 54,000ish.   The reported illnesses include all employees.

So for a workforce taking precautions, but also heavily interacting with the public, we have 570 confirmed cases (google), 6 deaths and 359 recovered.   The 6 deaths is about 1% of reported infected.   The infected number is likely higher as some were asymptomatic, but I Would guess they have increased screening and testing so the uncounted positives would likely be lower in this group.  So it looks like the deaths per infection is higher than the general population that we are currently reporting.

Rough numbers from a heavily screened group show over 1% infection rate which is likely closer to actual due to testing/checking than Total confirmed US numbers, but they are also in a heavily exposed profession.

I don’t see these numbers as “Oh no!  Shut it down!” Type of results, but I’m sure there are other perspectives.  Interesting to me to see it in context.

Also, have you seen those people?  I think having an underlying condition is a job requirement for the TSA.  Actually surprised the deaths weren't higher.

My 8th grader is not a model student and suffers from depression and anxiety already, so this is a tough time. But in a way it might be easier for us because we were already accessing support and professional help.
Suicidal ideation is NO JOKE. You are right to be concerned, but as a parent it's also important to not panic and to provide the foundational environment of stability that will help a child navigate rough waters. My advice would be to seek therapy immediately and to tell your child that you know she needs some support, and that sometimes it's easier to have somebody to talk to that isn't mom or dad. Feel free to DM me if you need ideas.

Done and done.  He knows it isn't like him and wants to figure out WTF also.  Glad he felt comfortable enough to tell us.  He's pretty mature and self-aware for an 11yr old.

The long term mental health issues that are going to come from this is going to be off the charts. The worst thing someone with any type of depression can do is stay inside 24/7.

This actually hit really close to home.  Last night, my 11 yr old who is an extrovert on no medications, woke us up at midnight to tell us that he'd been having thoughts of suicide and he was scared.  WTF?!?!  talk about freaking the fuck out.

given some of the latest findings and with 20/20 hindsight, there are bascially 4 main things I think we could have really done differently that would have made a huge difference in deaths if you were already aware that 10's of thousands at least were going to die no matter  what we did.

    1. no travel in from anywhere jan 30th

    2. quarantine NY/NJ

    3. not fuck up the original test

    4. high level lockdown of the elderly care facilities - we needed to focus our minimal early testing efforts there.

everything else was only going to help at the margins.  people of any intelligence(this does not include teenagers and college spring breakers) were going to stop flying, stop shaking hands, naturally social distance, etc.  I do agree shutting down scheduled mass gatherings(games, concerts, SXSW) was needed.  I'm not sure other shutdowns helped that much.

But you know nobody of either party would have done those first two at an early enough stage to matter.  Nobody.
