I feel like engaging in "diplomacy" when you are not, in fact, an elected or appointed official of the United States and acting in that capacity, is in fact, quite illegal. I'm pretty sure it's called the fucking Logan Act.

Could also be interesting from a FARA perspective, which has been enforced several times in recent years.  But I assume it would need to be shown that Trump got payment for it.

    Recent notable cases

  2. On the "Trump sending Covid tests to Russia" thing, just to be clear, these were not the little litmus test strips.  These were the testing machines.  To the dictator of a country who was under heavy sanctions.

    Quote

What Trump secretly sent to Putin

The book also contains new details about Trump’s relationship with the Russian president. In 2020, Woodward writes, Trump had “secretly sent Putin a bunch of Abbott Point of Care Covid test machines for his personal use.”

During the height of the pandemic, Russia and the United States did exchange medical equipment such as ventilators. But Putin — who infamously isolated himself over fears of Covid — told Trump on a phone call to keep the delivery of the Abbott machines quiet, Woodward reports.

“Please don’t tell anybody you sent these to me,” Putin said to Trump, according to Woodward.

“I don’t care,” Trump replied. “Fine.”

“No, no,” Putin said. “I don’t want you to tell anybody because people will get mad at you, not me. They don’t care about me.”

He's made the calculation that he'd prefer to run against Harris in 2028 than try to run as a Republican after a second Trump term.

He's not wrong.  And he won't be the last one to make that calculation.  I guarantee you we'll see other high Republican officeholders who might have presidential aspirations subtly undermine Trump over the next 29 days.

The story on how he wasn't taking calls from Biden/Harris was starting to pick up steam.  If this next Hurricane is as bad as it looks, I think he realized it would damage his career more than Harris's.

The best betting markets are hammering the obvious wrong bets like those betting on Trump to win the popular vote or Kari Lake winning AZ. you don't get rich but it's easy money.

The only two risks that I see. 1) Something drastic occurs (i.e. harris announces she's dropping out) and you're late to get out of the bet.  2) A site like Polymarket goes offline and doesn't pay out.

Three things about the betting markets:

    1. As with any binary prediction on the election, it can't be wrong.  If Trump has a 1% chance of winning, and he does, then that 1% paid off.

    2. It's basically the median opinion of the public.  If I trusted the public's median opinion, then I wouldn't have to worry about this election.  Roughly half the voting public thinks Donald Trump was a competent President.  It boggles the fucking mind how stupid we are.  The gambling sites are pulling from the same absurd think tank.  What kind of odds can I get that in the next year, it will be announced that we have diplomatic relations with several alien species?

    3. Even the people that bet on those markets believe they are wrongs on the odds.  There would be no reason to bet otherwise.

  4. It's not for me to decide what offends Black people. What they say goes.
My own opinion from looking at the picture is that the costume is not degrading. He's not dressed and made up like a minstrel from a minstrel show. I'm not sure you can even accurately call that "blackface."

Of course, the NYT goes to scholars and historians for context and possible reactions of other people.
I guess, in an ideal world, this story should say the guy dressed up as Michael Jackson and then let the picture explain what that looks like. Declaring it "blackface" is editorial and somewhat inflammatory. That's not the NYT's job.
Instead of waiting to see how the Black community might react, we get the editorialized report and a panel of academics. The reporters don't even need to leave the office.

You can accurately describe it as blackface. That is not editorializing. Wearing dark makeup to look like a black person is wearing blackface. I agree there are various levels associated with blackface that affect how bad it is, as is the timing. I agree that this doesn’t seem egregious, particularly since any parody of Michael Jackson has little overlap with black stereotypes.

But, considering the historical association with blackface, it’s pretty much assumed offensive today, unless there is a very good reason.

If you have 10 minutes, listen to James Carville talk in detail about running barbed wire through Trump's "fat fucking ass" and how Melania is "horse fucking" Trump:

I can't say I actually like James Carville. It's been 30 years and I am still figuring it out.  But he has to be one of my top five people I'd like to get drunk with.  "We've had engineers weigh in; the man is incapable of wiping his ass."

  6. It’s not like there are legitimate charities out there like the Red Cross to help people impacted by flooding. No let’s send the money to a know conman.

there will probably be purity tests to qualify for funds

Right, they could avoid the handling fees by just tweeting the Red Cross link and a plea to donate. That would make sense, unless you really like handling fees.

You could lose a lot of money wagering on a "floor" of GQP stupidity. In my observation, there is none and they will continue plowing ahead until they are too stupid to breathe. Morons leading rubes....today's GQP.

Yeah, let's talk math here.  If she is not primaried by 2026, that means at least 25% of the voting citizens in a congressional district believes she is the best they could do.  Because, this isn't just about voting party lines.  In a safe district, the real election is at the primary, and half of those voters picked her. That is how shitty the Republican Party is.

️ Gazprom becomes Russia's least profitable company in 2023, Forbes reports.Russian gas giant Gazprom was ranked as the most unprofitable company in Russia last year, ending 2023 with a record net loss of $6.1 billion, Forbes Russia reported on Oct. 3.

If that's the case, it would make sense to nationalize the the company.  Private companies either make money or cut head count.

Trump voters have been married to him for 8 or 9 years.  They’re not out there considering divorce seriously just yet, but they’re for sure really fucking bored, unenthused, and tired.

I think a lot of it will depend on how the election goes.  If they pick up the Senate and stay close in the House, they may continue with the nonsense.  But if they don't win the Senate and lose a bunch of seats in the House, there will need to be a change.   Losing is the biggest sin in politics.

Yep.  This feels like an attempt to soften Trumps anti-choice position by having his wife (for the time being) come out and support a woman's right to choose.  She is still the same racist birther asshole who didn't say a word or lift a finger to help when she was first-lady.  Why the fuck should anyone care what she thinks now?

I agree.  But I think it's stupid.  It's not something the undecided voter is going to notice.  The pro-choicers won't give a shit.  The only group that will notice and care is the prolife faction, and to them it will be another gut punch. This is a topic that Trump should be avoiding, not evolving his image on. And while the prolife faction is not near a majority, they are sizable and they aren't prone to nuance.

Meanwhile - another school forfeited playing them (so now, Wyoming, Southern Utah, Boise State and Utah State).

132 years ago, Nebraska beat Missouri 1-0.  Missouri forfeited because Nebraska had a black player, George Flippin.  I am pretty proud of that victory.  (I had as much to do with it as I have with any victory since.)
