I would guess that 100 people is probably about right for midsize (100MW to 200 MW) data center, depending on the company. Physical security is the biggest job category. You also have IT security, IT programmers, folks that maintain cooling and electrical systems. At a large data center, just pulling replacing old disks might be a 24x7 job. They may also have other functions colocated. The client will also take credit for temporary construction jobs.

There is a paranoia level of secrecy in working on these things. The shell company thing is common for the land purchase and even some early permitting. I hadn't heard of NDAs for elected officials, but it is standard for anybody else involved. My company even had a code word for our client, to avoid accidentally saying their name in front of others who weren't under NDA. I remember after my company had filed some paperwork for the shell company, I would get calls from tech magazines asking for confirmation on the project. (They all knew which shell company equated to what brand name, because of past projects.) But, at some point, the client makes a big announcement about how much they are investing, how many jobs they are creating, and the what community programs they starting. We still can't say shit without them saying it first, but it does loosen things up a bit.

And it is more likely to get snap in rural communities.

Regarding narratives, “first to market” is a huge part of the tech hero story. Normally you could expect some level of caution from established companies. Not with these companies and not on this subject. Second place is just the first loser.

It's behind a paywall. Do you want to change three words and then post it here. It's what AI would do. (Bonus points if the three words you change make the basic premise indecipherable.)

I recall overhearing some dipshits parents talking about bringing their kids to Sleepers. if this whole parenting thing is graded on a curve, I feel I did pretty well.

Yay, there’s a thought process I call “magic AI” which is basically just faith that AI will make everything better. It’s so dangerous because it completely sidesteps any responsibility to address predictable negative consequences. It’s similar to radical Christianity ignoring global warming because surfer Jesus will take care of us.

My issue is that it is a rationalization to justify the end goal. Nobody cares that they are selling fake shit publicly. The majority of the people who deal with the nuisance still oppose the federal government diving in. (Are there any mayoral candidates supporting ICE actions?) It took some rage-grifter youtuber to confront them and then lobby the DHS to get the attention. Because no one fucking cared. It is naive to pretend that the vendor actions are what drove the ICE crackdown. This was not the problem for which people were searching for a solution. The problem is that ICE wasn't meeting its quotas and getting bad press for arresting students, and grandmas, and nurses. That was the problem that drove this "raid." Vance said it outloud when he discussed Springfield, Ohio. "If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that's what I'm going to do." The suffering had nothing to do with eating cats. It had to do with black immigrants existing around white people. That is what is driving the immigration crackdown, not Canal Street. That's why they are arresting students, grandmas, and nurses. And I am sick of the milquetoast rationalizations that imagines it wouldn't happen if we just kept people from selling knock-off purses.

If the ChaptGPT has taught us anything, it's that our government is not nearly as uptight about IP as we once believed. If these idiots had just been billionaires, all this would have just gone away.

Well, and all the people buying that counterfeit shit, knowing full well it was counterfeit shit. It's worth mentioning that four citizens were arrested. People actually from New York, who were around when the shit was going down, and who tried to interfere. Because New Yorkers are more concerned by fascists than fake bags or walking around people on the sidewalk.
-
Really, I missed the plot because one of them was arrested for "with intent to distribute" tacked onto his possession charge. Note: arrested, not charged, not convicted. Zero fucking evidence and for you that makes him a "career drug dealer" who is moonlighting selling knock-off purses on the street, because that seems logical to you. In the time that I have been on this board and its predecessor, I have "hung out" with some shitstain who dropped rocks onto cars and another who faked cancer. And those are just two that I knew about. You have the confidence of an idiot.

The $/sf doesn't raise too many alarms for me. We aren't talking about a hotel. The facility will need to have security measures that will drive up the cost. That's not just bullet proof glass and reinforced doors; it's supply chain requirements similar to military projects, which is where you wind up with $300 hammers. You can't buy light fixtures that might have bugs in them. Ask the Palestinians about buying pagers. I have no idea what it should cost, but 3-5x doesn't seem crazy in the context of secure government projects. I would imagine they would follow similar construction to embassy builds, but with it being private money, they might look to avoid that red tape. Who the fuck knows. They are insane and there is nothing about this that seems planned out. The comments on the inconsistent renderings is definitely interesting. Maybe the ballroom is one floor with working space above or below. Or maybe they just typed some prompts into ChatGPT to get renderings. Again, who the fuck knows. But they really should have had the basic design agreed to before doing the demo.

I am not talking about overall immigration enforcement or what "most people" believe. I would not advocate imprisoning Trump based on a picture of him with Epstein. I do not think the government should impose the same punishment on Trump that they did on Epstein, just because of a picture. But you believe that the treatment of all immigrants should be based on the actions of a few of them. Because you are a fascist and they are other. Do you honestly believe you haven't "hung out" with someone who has beaten their wife, or molested kids, or done some other seriously fucked up shit? Do you honestly believe the government should apply the guilt-by-association criteria to you? There is no reason to believe these immigrants were close friends; they just went to the same street to sell their shit. And if you are going to nitpick spelling, I should mention that 2+1 =3, not 4. Only 3 of the immigrants arrested have a violent history, per the assertions of the DHS. Learn to fucking count.
-
If you are honestly wondering why people are calling you a fascist, it's because of nonsense like this. If you've ever worked in an office or gone to a church with more than 20 people, it is almost certain you've "hung out" with someone who has beaten their wife. The difference is that you are not "other", so you don't apply those rules to yourself. You only apply that rule to others like black people and immigrants. Nazis would follow the same logic with Jews, with their newspapers having a Jewish crimes section to demonstrate how all Jews should be punished. You think "guilt by association" should be applauded.

People who assaulting people, should be arrested for assault. That is true regardless of where they are born. People who aren't assaulting people shouldn't be conflated with those who are. Do you disagree? The feds don't generally get involved in assault causes. Looking at the DHS website that details this arrest. A few things: 1. It is extremely slanted. 2. None of the nine immigrants who were arrested are Haitian. They are all from Africa. I know, they are black with an accent, so what's the difference, right? 3. Of the nine immigrants arrested, only two have been (previously) arrested for assault. It does not state when they were arrested or how the cases were resolved, or if they are still pending. In addition, three others had non-violent offenses like counterfeiting. Additionally, there was one they claim to have assaulted a Mexican police officer, but obviously that isn't a US crime and we wouldn't know much about it. From the video, there was one dude yelling and getting up in this the RaCiSt NaZi's face, and there was one dude who actually grabbed a camera. So, a couple of questions: 1. Is any of this worth getting a couple of vans of federales involved? I mean, from a resource allocation standpoint, is this where you want your tax dollars going? 2. Do the seven other dudes deserve the same punishment of the 2 who were aggressive? Including the ones who pulled back the guy who was grabbing the camera? Because this sure as shit looks like a "they all look the same to me" moment. Let's get a couple of black immigrants on camera being aggressive, and that justifies all the other bullshit. But it doesn't. Not to me.

You don’t live in New York. I’m guessing you’re one of those gaping pussies terrified of any town larger than Midland. Nobody was arrested for assault.

I got a 46, but most of the yes answers were from more than 25 years ago or had significant qualifiers. Have I ever lived in a neighborhood that didn't have college degrees? Sure, in college. Same for the long haul bus. Did I ever work on the factory floor? Yeah, as a young engineer during a strike, I was required to scab. But it seems irrelevant to whether I live in a bubble. These days I am regularly at construction sites and I don't see a huge difference from the factory floor. -
Government Shutdown 2025: This Time It’s Personal

Something to keep in mind: the Democratic Party is pretty unpopular right now, mostly because they seem like a bunch of pussies while Trump is doing horrible shit. In fairness to the Party, there aren’t a ton of levers they can be pulling to rein in Trump. But this one of them. There may not be another one that comes along in the next year. And they are framing it around an issue they can win on: healthcare premiums. So, yay, the Dems need to do this.- 1209 replies

Something I learned when Fox News was just making up shit about the Seth Rich murder: if there is no one being directly financially impacted, there is no legal consequence. They can lie all they want.

I was back in Omaha this weekend. My sister and her friends went with us. One of the friends’ kid is a non-binary 16 year old. They had some serious depression issues after the election. They felt that America had basically voted to despise them. During the first No Kings, they were deeply moved by all of it, but particularly people showing up with signs to protect trans kids. And it marked a positive turn in their mental health. There is some modest political benefit of these marches. But don’t underestimate their value to the vulnerable communities that are being targeted. Don’t underestimate the value to everyone who thinks it’s all so fucking crazy. We’ve got 39 more months of this shit and we need to take care of each other.

Also, I imagine since it's an EPA grant, it's related to climate change increasing the flooding risk. It looks like Kipnuk is along a river delta emptying into sea, which tend to be at the greatest risk. It's the economics of pollution: the rich profit from releasing the CO2 and the poor pay the costs. But, if you don't believe in climate change, it's easy to ignore the root cause. -
I guess I should have provided a quick synopsis: Two of the five seats of the Georgia Public Service Commission is on the ballot for Nov 4th. They are the only thing on the ballot, so turnout is expected to be miniscule. Currently, all five seats are held by Republicans, despite Georgia being a purplish state. This commission regulates the utilities for Georgia. The private companies (Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company) have monopolies which are regulated in what additional capacity the build, what the capacity includes, and what rates they can charge. They very much want a "pro-business" commission and have invested in re-electing the Republicans. But, with the tiny turnout, any kind of grassroots campaign can help turn the tide. So, please contact folks you know in Georgia and urge them to vote for Alicia Johnson and Pete Hubbard. This will affect their utility bills, and I don't think people understand how big of a deal that will be in the next five years.
