  1. AOC would struggle to win a state-wide election in NY.  She's not going to win the Presidency.  That's just wishcasting nonsense.

None of this has to do with who she really is, but what the wide-spread perception is.  She is the the left-wing radical poster child. Swing voters aren't watching the debates.  They aren't doing research.  Her negatives are well established and they aren't going anywhere.

  2. No, your argument seems to be that diversity and equality has to be taught and practiced in a certain pre-packaged way -- a way whose effectiveness is of questionable.  And that we moment this administration is gone we need to go back to that exact practice "to own MAGA".

I haven’t argued it needs to be taught in a certain way. In fact my position is that details of the policy are irrelevant in the context of allowing the MAGA reaction to dictate the how it is presented, even if nothing materially changes. That’s not because I’m trying “to own MAGA”, but because I believe it is unconscionable to surrender to them as they (successfully) roll back the progress that has been made.

If you feel that I have previously stated something different, please quote it.

The interesting thing about that story is that it's a story.  I am not surprised in the least that Congressional staffers use anonymous accounts to defend their boss online.  I'm pretty sure I've interacted with them.  A "weekly" comment? Who gives a shit.

    Quote

“I would say [it was] at least a weekly comment, if not daily,” says one of several former Mace staffers who spoke with WIRED. Another found her high regard for her skills somewhat at odds with her demonstrated ability. (Like all the staffers WIRED spoke with, they requested anonymity because they fear reprisal from their former boss.)

But, "several" Congressional staffers talking to the press is interesting.  This is a hit piece utilizing multiple professional Republicans as its source; their political professional careers are over if they are just being undisciplined.  Nobody would want them if they can't shut the fuck up and it wouldn't be difficult to guess who they are.  Unless they are already working with someone else.  My guess is that someone with the SCGOP or National GOP wants to clean house. At the very least, someone with some pull is looking to primary her.

  4. A bit of overlap from the other thread, just wait to see how he acts in the leadup to the World Cup '26 and Olympics '28. A lot of people holding some pride left will likely give up, especially when the republican party does nothing to stop him while still winning elections. This is who we are now to the rest of the world.

I have a hard time believing soccer will be part of any inflection point in our current path.

It’s kinds why the singing of God bless America has somewhat bothered me. In someways, it comes across as a bit arrogant - that were more deserving of God’s favor than we are his mercy. Whenever I hear the chorus of America the Beautiful, in my mind, I think these words: America, America. God have mercy on thee…

    A little Katherine Hepburn tangent:

Hepburn got married early in her career (when she was 21) to Ludlow Odgen Smith.  Even though Hepburn didn't have any plans to take his name, she hated the idea of being called "Kate Smith" by anyone.  Kate Smith, "the Songbird of the South," was a rather stout, ultra-patriotic singer well known for singing "Good Bless America."  To overcome this objection, Ludlow Odgen Smith changed is name to S. Ogden Ludlow to avoid any confusion.  (Undefeated.)

So, yeah, not liking the song is nothing new.

  6. I'll wait for someone to make a compelling case that the appropriate response to ICE trying to take you into custody isn't "shoot your way out" at this point.  If they are going to fucking kidnap you and send you to a hellscape country that you aren't a citizen of and have no ties to, in open defiance of a court order.....yeah, you have literally one option to prevent that from happening.
When we opt out of the Rule of Law, we necessarily opt into Rule of the Gun.  Fucking stupid.

Trump wants to militarize this. I’m mean, that doesn’t work for the migrant, but that’s why I don’t want bullets flying. But maybe that’s the next stop in our path to bottom.

I guess the end of June..”. I mean, anyone who loves improv, has to love this administration. Just major economic policy being stream of consciousness nonsense. The funniest thing is that market doesn’t really react, because no one can take him seriously. The end state speculation is just priced in regardless of what absurd path it will take to get there.

  8. Holy shit! I did not know that such a thing existed. My handwriting has always been almost illegible, to the point where I often cannot read my own handwriting. No amount of practice at penmanship in school would change that.  I was getting poor grades in penmanship as a kid - and when our bar exam was handwritten over three days, I always began the exam by explaining I moved around the country a lot when they used phonetics for spelling, and so ignore the fact that I look like a functional illiterate because I promised to use spellcheck on my briefs.
My mom had beautiful handwriting and was into calligraphy. Which gives you an idea of how much she appreciated my handwriting.

For me I think the handwriting thing came down to just lack of finger dexterity. Although, I do flip letters and shapes. Senior year I did an art project that included an outline of Nebraska. When I was done my friend asked if I had flipped the state to represent that it was backwards. I had spent a few hours on the thing and didn’t realize I put the panhandle in the east. I’m not sure what you call that. “Stupid “ maybe.

Speaking of which, I wonder how much of the cursive nostalgia is from folks who struggled at every other subject.

  9. It's not my area of study, but there was research that suggested that handwriting did assist children with sensorimotor skils and memory. Arts integrated curricula were included with this as well. Perhaps one can find other newer methods that would perform likewise, but handing children a piece of paper and a pencil is a lot cheaper so I have no objections to it.
Plus, when the power grid fails and our infrastructure collapses, we'll all be educating the children in tents and encampments anyway.

They still teach hand writing (printing), they just aren’t teaching the second, more formal, script system the west has. I know Montessori schools will work the eye-hand coordination thing before kids can even spell. And it’s not like learning cursive was a light lift; I’m guessing we dedicated 20% of class time, and probably 40% of student effort, of 3rd grade for it. And as someone with shitty eye-hand coordination, it was 95% of my school angst. Fucking hand cramps while failing to get that shit legible.

  10. I have been slightly taken aback that handwriting is no longer taught.  But it's not that big a deal.
After I took mechanical drawing in high school, I took notes in a rough version of single-stroke Gothic lettering all through undergrad.  Had to go back to cursive in law school to be able to puke out essays faster.

And typing is much faster. And more legible. And nobody hand writes business letters and rarely personal ones. Shit gets outdated and fuck any schooling system that doesn’t adjust, freeing up time to teach new skills that didn’t exist when I was a kid.

I'd go all in on an idea like this before any of the shit the Dems are trying right now

I'm a big proponent of the first part - developing local newspapers to get the word out.  Print media is dying in the free market.  Many of the surviving papers put up firewalls either for their entire publication, or for the sports.  But that leaves a void.  In Nebraska, after the Omaha World Herald was gutted there were a couple of papers that popped up that rely on donations and provide really good, but limited, reporting.  But they don't have the budget to do daily sports.  If they did, it would get way more eyeballs.  Their current reporting frequently focuses on the corruption in state government or public organizations, like this report on the fuckery around around the power company self-dealing on a property purchase.  It's not explicitly political, but helps explain the reality to brainwashed rubes.  You don't need stories that even mention Trump, but when you explain the reality of his policies, it can undermine him and others who follow a similar path.

We aren't going to win the political battle without winning the media battle.

The discussion we've been having about Joe Rogan and Asmongold isn't about the party's product, though. It's about how the party's ideas are marketed.

I personally think the "how" is much more of an issue than the "what."  The "what" isn't getting to the low-information voter in anyway that sticks.  The left frequently wins on the liberal issues in red state referendums, but still can't crack 40% with their politicians in those same states.  I don't know the solution, but some suggestions would be:

    1. Figure out a way to stop the spam.  I think Democrats are disadvantaged eschewing corporate contributions, so they rely more much more heavily on individual donors.  But in doing so, they spam the living fuck out of their base: calls, emails, texts...day after day.  I'm a true believer, but I get sick of the typing "Stop" multiple times of day.  I think it has to have an effect on how the casual voter views Democrats as a whole.  I get it: campaigns need money.  And the national orgs won't give you if you haven't raised a certain amount on your own to demonstrate viability.  But we need to figure something else out.

    2. Non-campaign propaganda.  I see all sorts of bullshit on Facebook and LinkedIn that isn't directly related to politics, but that I suspect is being pushed to drive a certain narrative that is helpful to conservatives.  Usually it's the shit about how awesome it was back in the 70s, you know, before we had regulations.  How much tougher we were before culture changed.  So, how do we drive a narrative that shit has actually approved over the years, which is kind of crucial if you are going to preach the idea that "progression" is good.

Thing is, Arkansas has had a fair share of disasters in the past 2 months, and I'm not sure exactly what more Huckabeef needs to do to secure FEMA funding for her state, other than maybe give Trump a sloppy bj on tv.

I'm not defending her in the least, but she's as MAGA as they come and it hasn't been enough.

Well, he's not King yet.  Right now he can only gum up the system, not replace it.  He gums it up enough and people will believe it needs to be replaced.  Arkansas and Missouri are filled with enough cultists who will believe him as he says it's FEMA's fault.  Huckabeef certainly won't blame Trump.  And once the system is replaced* with a single decision maker, that decision maker has all the power.  It's the same thing with Tariffs.  Sure, he may fuck up the economy, but since Congress has ceded him the ability to either save or ruin companies, he can use that to demand loyalty.  Same thing with deportations.  When the President, or the Dept of State, can decide to cancel a visa, they can punish someone who says something they don't agree with.  Trump is demonstrating what happens when a system is placed with a person.

Note: it doesn't actually need to "replaced," just "reformed" in a way that makes it more "efficient." That includes which states/counties get funds.  It could also include which contractors get the work, which would be a graft machine.

It is not unusual for weeks to pass before FEMA approves a declaration. President Donald Trump has pointed to these waits as a reason he is considering dismantling the agency, calling FEMA “very bureaucratic” and “very slow.”

Yeah, that's game plan.  Crippled the agencies, drive up dissatisfaction with them, dismantle them completely, replacing the bureaucracy with a King handing out money to the governors who bend the knee.  A competent dictatorship can be fast and even efficient.  But the "competent" part of that isn't a system, it's luck.  Luck that we will not have.

I'm glad we're still at the "Dems have to podcast their way out of this" stage after all the shit the Trump admin has done so far.

Well, my main focus is still to whine incessantly about it on a social media platform with people who mostly agree with me.  Podcasts are my back-up plan.

Don't completely refuse to go on Rogan because you think he's republican or it's some maga podcast.

Democrats weren't going on Rogan because he was giving a stage to Holocaust deniers and anti-vaxxers.  There is, or was, a general mindset that you don't provide draw eyes to someone who is peddling irresponsible and dangerous bullshit.  But, I think that mentality is changing.  Frankly, there is nothing a politician is going to do to give Rogan "credibility" because credibility is an outdated notion in today's world.

NSIAP - Schumer failing (again) to meet the moment as opposition leader

He's just trying to keep it in the news cycle.  At best, if it actually went to a vote, he could get Republican Senators on the record for supporting corruption (as if that would fucking matter). What alternative was the "right" path?

Schumer deserves a lot of shit for a lot of reasons, but I don't think this is one of them.
