Was talking about Verlander and Cole yesterday at lunch.

I said 3/90 for Verl and 5/125 for Cole

    Reasonable?

If Cole has a good year $150M/6yr is his floor.  $90M/3yr for Verlander is steep but in range.  I’m not sure how much Verlander will be focused on money or winning or location.  Ideally Houston could get him for $60M/2yr plus a vesting option.

2020 rotation of Verlander, Whitley, McCullers, James, and Martin would be fine as long as Whitley and James establish themselves this season.

  2. I’m wondering if Herman’s focus on PWO is part of a contingency against the new transfer rules.  As 3rd string scholarship players become more and more likely to transfer elsewhere for playing time, there won’t always be time to recruit replacements.  Replacing the old “grades and character” walk-ons with the new “fringy offer” types is a brilliant hedge.  It’s also probably part of the sales pitch; with all the transfers, the odds of some of these PWOs getting scholarships go way up.

  3. I LOVE getting rid of shit.  My wife isn’t a hoarder by any stretch but she is messy as fuck and has low standards for what she’s willing to let take up space.  Nothing brings me more pleasure than throwing something away or taking something to goodwill knowing I will never have to see it again.  I told my wife if we did the Marie Kondo shit I would be sitting naked in an empty house with only my wedding ring and guitar, since those are the only material possessions I own that I actually gaf about.

  4. In order:

Robert Timmons looked unbelievable in practice his freshman year.

deSean Hales had the best highlight vid I have ever seen.

John Chiles had the 2nd best.

If not for injury, Marco Martin, Bryan Pickryl, and Jon Gray probably would have been all Americans.

Edorian McCullough, Mal Williams, and Darius White should have been all Americans after the early flashes they showed.  They all had 1st round athletic ability.

Drew Kelson didn’t become what I thought he would.

Why would a team do that?  The first part I get.  But that 10 year deal seems it would have a really good chance to indeed hamstring the franchise, especially if the option is 100% guaranteed for the full term of years.  Yikes.

5 for $200MM.  Team option for 10 year deal after that, average salary of $25MM per year, only the first 5 years are guaranteed then year to year, no trade clause waived.   Boom.

10-14 years from now, $20M won’t be squat.  Tying up 7% of the payroll in 1 player is no big deal.  But odds are if Harper produces, he will opt out.  And if he doesn’t opt out it will be because he sucked; but I can’t imagine even under the worst case scenario that he wouldn’t at least be a decent DH.  Even Pujols has been a roughly league average hitter, and his contract is not the reason the Angels aren’t good.  As awful as Pujols has been recently, he’s been worth 19+ fWAR over his age 30-38 seasons (my hypothetical Harper $200M/10yr player option would cover age 30-39), which at $8M/war is ~$150M.  Actually think there is a lot more risk in the $160M/4yr part, because you’re tying up a ton of payroll which would probably restrict Houston a great deal thru the rest of their current competitive window.

  6. I still think Harper ends up doing a $160M/4yr deal with a $200M/10yr player option.  Gets him the longest, biggest, and highest AAV ever along with a chance to re-enter free agency while still in his prime.  Doesn’t hamstring the franchise in the out years.

  7. Biggest questions will be OL depth and front 7 depth.  This team has talent and experience everywhere.

QB: Ehlinger/Buechele/Rising/Johnson/Thompson; bound to lose one, as long as it's only 1 they're fine.  Moving forward QB recruiting will be strange.  2 methods I see are just replace transfers with grad transfers who don't mind backing up, or always recruit 1 athlete who can move to WR/TE if nobody leaves.  Essentially, the depth chart should always consist of the incumbent starter, a RS freshman, a true freshman, and either a grad transfer or an athlete.

RB: Ingram/Young/Johnson/Brown/Porter/Houston; I don't expect Porter or Houston to stay.  I see hope for Johnson and Brown contributing, Young is a solid reserve but they will need someone to step up as the primary backup.  But overall no major concerns.

WR: XWR: Johnson/Eagles/Washington/Epps; HWR: Smith/Whittington/Moore/Pouncey; ZWR: Duvernay/Burt/Woodard/Lewis; I believe there are at least 4 future NFL players in this group.

TE: Brewer/Leitao/Cummins/Liebrock/Wiley; solid group, wouldn't be surprised to see Cummins move to OT, Brewer and Leitao won't be studs but I think they will get the job done.  Liebrock is a sleeper stud

OL: LT: Cosmi/Moore/Urquidez/Hookfin; LG: Imade/Angilau/Hudson; 😄 Shack/Kerstetter; RG: Okafor/Ghirmai; RT: TBD/Johnson/Jones; biggest ? on the team is OL depth. If they don't get at least 1 grad transfer who can contribute in a major way, they're fucked.  If they can get the freshmen ready in time, everything will be ok, but a few injuries, some attrition, and lack of development could derail a promising season.

DL: DE1: Graham/Bimage/Mpagi/Sweat; DT: Wilbon/Coburn/Christmas/Ojomo/Chisholm; DE2: Roach/Jones/Carson/Warren; They need Coburn to be a player but I think he will be.  Solid group.

LB: SLB: Ossai/Vaughns/Townsend MLB: McCulloch/Floyd/Adeoye/Boyd; WLB: Johnson/Gbenda/Overshown/Tillman; They will need at least 2 freshmen/rs freshmen to be major contributors but between McCulloch and Ossai the unit is solid at the top.  I don't expect Townsend or Boyd to be around.  Not a major concern.

DB: RCB: Cook/Watson/Caldwell; FS: Sterns/Foster/Estell; SS: Jones/Brown/Adimora/Owens; LCB: Boyce/Green/Duvernay; NB: Thompson/Jamison; Next to WR this is the deepest, most talented, most experienced group on the team.  EVen if Jones leaves this unit will be fine.

  8. 4th or 5th round.  He wasn’t going to suddenly become fast or quick enough to be a 1st or 2nd round pick, so he is probably making a good decision.

Only guys who should come back are guys who either a.) might not be drafted at all or b.) have injuries, off the field issues, or untapped athleticism that they can improve to significantly improve their stock.

  9. Acceptable class overall but the failure to sign more than 1 OL is a complete failure on the coaches.  They were already going to need at least one grad transfer but now they need 2-3 just to fill a depth chart.  Any attrition from the current group could be devastating.  I also think they should have taken 2-3 more DB but that’s not as big of a deal.  But who they signed at QB, RB, WR, TE, LB, and DB raise the talent level on the roster.  DL has projects but upside and should have the necessary time to develop given the current depth.  If they somehow uncover 2-3 OL by February this class will be complete.

The Astros are one of the two best teams in the American League, even without Keuchel, Morton, and Gonzalez.

Currently the Red Sox are significantly better than the Astros, and the Yankees are roughly equal.  But the Yankees are almost certainly going to improve significantly between now and opening day, so if Houston stands pat they will be the 3rd best team with a significant gap.  That said, I expect them to make at least 2 significant moves and be roughly on par with the Yankees and Sox by opening day.

So right now our rotation is JV, Cole, McHugh, Peacock, and Valdez/James?

Yep,  if opening day were today, Verlander, Cole, McHugh, James, and Valdez would be the rotation.  Luckily it’s not opening day and there’s a 100% chance they add at least 1 SP.

  12. There are plenty of examples of bat only prospects who followed Reeds basic trajectory and still ended up having big league success.  In the short term, guy like Luke Voit, Ji-Man Choi, and Peter O’Brien all were good prospects whose stock fell after initial big league struggles, but at age 25-27 project to be everyday big leaguers in 2019.  He just needs to dominate AAA and either hope a 1B/DH in Houston suffers a major injury or a rebuilding team makes it worth Houston’s while to give him up.

Like I said for an earlier proposed deal, might as well include AJ Reed and offer to pay for his food

Ha.  If/when Houston adds another position player, either White or Kemp will no longer have a roster spot, and since they are out of options, it makes sense to try to include them in a trade.  Reed is essentially out of hope as far as his future in Houston, but he still has an option remaining so he can be stashed in AAA (and is more likely than White/Kemp to pass through waivers if DFA’ed).

Rosenthal article today said Cleveland might be looking to attach Encarnacion onto a Kluber or Bauer trade, since he's owed $21M next season.

Would obviously involve taking on a lot of money, but the prospect cost would drop significantly, and you solve your needs at both SP and DH.

I like it.  Say Encarnacion is $15M underwater, Kluber has $55M in surplus value, giving them an aggregate ~$40M in value.  I think Tucker and a 3rd tier pitching prospect like Armenteros would get that done pretty easily.  I’d be cool with that.  Maybe throw in Tyler White and have Cleveland eat $5-10M.

He played in too many games last year. Chirinos and Stassi/Stubbs should each play around 80 games. Chirinos balled out in 88 games with Rangers in 2017.

The Braves had an effective platoon last year split between Suzuki and Flowers, with each guy getting 2-3 games a week.

A 1 year deal for Chirinos is much better than trading for Realmuto or giving Ramos a multi year deal.

Depends on the cost and what other moves they make.  Would much rather have Ramos at $30M/3yr than Chirinos at $4M/1yr.  Chirinos isn’t bad if he’s hitting 9th.

  16. Hopefully just means they want to upgrade from Stassi to Chirinos and make Altuve happy (Chirinos and Altuve are good friends).  The drop off from Realmuto/Grandal/Ramos to Chirinos is massive.  Right now the 5-9 of the everyday lineup is Gurriel/Reddick/White/Chirinos/Kemp.  Blech.

Well the Mariners will suck next year. I doubt the As maintain what they did this past season, Angels gonna angel, and Rangerslulz

We should win the division by 20 games

If the Angels don’t spend the money/prospects to put a contender around Trout for the next 2 seasons they will be the stupidest organization in baseball history.

  18. I think there are going to be some really good values in the 2B market.  Murphy, Dozier, LeMahieu, and Lowrie are all really good players and I think at least 2 of those guys will sign for less than $10M/yr.  Cabrera, Kinsler, Harrison, and Walker are also everyday caliber 2B and several of them will be left out of the cold.  Might be a potential out of the box move for Houston to sign one as a DH and have them spot in LF and/or 1B.  Would love Murphy or Dozier hitting 6th or 7th in Houston’s lineup. Dozier especially could be a big time rebound candidate; over the last 6 seasons (including his shit 2018), he averaged 28 HR and 3.8 fWAR.
