If a bunch of nutties who love playing with guns want to waste each other at their gun store/range that's fine.

People that go to a gun range to practice using their firearm, so they're prepared to safely use it in an emergency situation, are "nutties"? Cool, Bob.

I’ve now seen this a few times. What is this? I mean I know thru the comments it’s for irrigation but what’s it called. I’ve had several homes with irrigation and never seen this. Building a home now and working in some stuff I learned this week.

You may have had it and not known. Mine is underground beneath a cover near the main water valve at the street.

My understanding is that at idle damage can occur because engine is not up to temp and oil pressure is too low, and I would think any modern car's ECU manages those things sufficiently.

Oil viscosity is inversely proportional to temperature, so an engine that isn't up to temp has relatively high oil pressure. Like 85 to 100+ psig. As the engine warms up, oil pressure steadily drops. Your oil pressure will be lowest after extended run time in summer, hopefully no lower than ~15 psi at 750 rpm.

I've got all my outdoor spigots running.  All interior flowing as well.  So as of now no known issues.   I'm contemplating converting to "team drip" outside tonight.   I don't think it's supposed to get that cold in Dallas but don't really want to roll dice with outdoor freezing up again.  For those that dripped outside did you just wrap the metal piping/faucet with a towel and let drip?

I tore the foam gasket on the bottom-middle of my styrofoam covers to give the water an easy exit. The covers still serve to reduce heat transfer by blocking the wind and since heat rises they should be storing a pocket of slightly warmer air. I checked them every morning and had no issues with water freezing in the covers and blocking the exit.

They should address Gill as Roaring Kitty. Lol.

Loved when he said "I'm not a cat" and "I like the stock" .. Glad he was able to have fun given the outrageous claim made agsinst him.

Also laughed when reddit CEO straight up denied the anti semitism card Melvin tried to play. Melvin is such a victim with his mom and pop hedge fund!

  6. Had power the whole time... Spigots had to be unfrozen a couple days ago but they're dripping. If all my faucets and showers work and hot water works, should I bother closing the valve at the street and draining the system (in prep for thaw)?

Pretty good lists going on so far here.  I'm going to get some really good sleeping bags and I'm going to insulate my garage door as well.

Thoroughly recommend. Install was super easy and it improved our garage noticeably. It must to be a 20 degree improvement from whatever hellscape is outside.

Whole home generac and a water distribution manifold will be part of any new build in the future.

My dad is eyeing a generac too.

For us, more attic insulation because it's been on my list forever for summer electric bills (under roof, in ceiling, on pipes), hose misers + better insulation already ordered. Fire logs because by the time we realized we needed them we couldn't safely find them. A bit more water in our prepper stash. God damn toilet paper because we haven't had more than a few spare rolls in a calendar fucking year.

Still no power going on 90.5 hours now (none since Monday 2am) here in my Austin neighborhood. Getting used to the cold, dark house; seeing my breath as I sit or lay down to sleep. It’s a bit like Groundhog Day though - days are kind of running together

no water either, not a dribble for the last 36 hours. Still quite haven’t worked out the what to do with #2 when/if the moment arises.

How the fuck are you alive? Are you alone?

Found out tonight the wife's cousin that lives in town was without power for days and woke up getting sprayed and had to call the FD at 1am. Even he has power now but all his shit is wet.

Point is: Anyone you know with power would be happy to help.

Live in Houston where half block are new homes and half 1950s originals.  We all lost power for 36 hours.

At 37th hour, almost simultaneously, my two neighbors in older homes had attic pipes burst.  A slew of us lucky ones spent a couple hours helping them clean up the mess.  Luckily, it was not whole house but they each lost a large rectangular portion of their ceiling and items under said ceiling.   Now, they are looking for places to live for a few weeks.

So 1st hour that power was back and thawing started?

Yes.  Austin.  We received 19 incoming leads yesterday for plumbing issues.  And, we're not even a plumbing company.  We JUST got our plumbing license last week, and I have ONE plumber on staff, so we're prioritizing existing customers.  Temps got above freezing yesterday for a bit, and issues started arising.

I'm hearing the big plumbing companies are telling folks mid to late March before they can even come out to look at a leak.  This is going to dwarf Hurricane Harvey from an insurance claim standpoint.  Lots of these issues are NOT minor.  We have five in queue that will potentially be $100K+ due to the damages sustained.

Do y'all offer spray in insulation? Asking for me

So I need to put boiling water thru my gutters?  Wasn’t on my list of to do’s this week goddammit.

How will you do that? Watching YouTube you need a shit ton of hot water to put a dent in these dams. I don't think I have the fittings necessary to connect a hose to hot water in the house and get it outside. And my roof is crazy so the dams are deep as fuck. This looks like it would take all day even IF I can physically do it.
