Karnack ISD had one very similar to this in the early "80s.  One year our freshman baseball team played their varsity team.  Karnack did not have their own field so we played at the Longhorn Ammunition Plant's baseball field inside the secure area.  All they had was a backstop and benches.  The field of play was where they mowed.  They would not let personal vehicles inside the facility so what few fans that were there had to walk in and the two teams took this bus looking vehicle in.

When it's that dry, with lots of fuel, and windy.....a fire is going to happen.  Could be any number of things: power lines touched in high wind, a piece of metal or segment of chain falls off a trailer on the road, kicks up sparks into the dry grass (I've literally seen that happen in real-time), ash from someone's cigarette...truly anything.  All it takes is one mistake/bad circumstance.  I mean, it could also be someone being utterly stupid and deciding to fire up a campfire or something, so don't rule out stupid. In fact, NEVER rule out stupid.

I would start with “stupid” people.

If you are into the intrigue & subterfuge of the war, check out "Bodyguard of Lies"

Everything we've seen has been part of a sequence of events in the war.  BOB was invasion and post-invasion.  Before the bombing campaigns went into full swing, there was the Battle of the Atlantic and the Kreigsmarine.  The point was not just to establish shipping lanes, but the elimination of the U-boat threat.  Enigma codebreakers and the US Ultra machines.  The sacrifice of boats knowing they could be saved so as not to tip off the Germans that they were on to them.  Insane choices that had to be made.

The prize of the campaigns was to neutralize the manufacturing capacity of Germany, but also the rail systems that would be used to support troops stationed in France to repel the invasions.  That means bombing in France as well.  That meant thousands of French citizens perished.  As the neutralization of the U-boat threat was an equal prize in the Atlantic, so too was the elimination of the Luftwaffe in Europe.  The German Air Intelligence Service (as seen in the episode) was vast and who's sole purpose was confounding Allied air attacks.

They could have stopped Neptune if even at a fraction of their capacity and capabilities.  Had they had been able to conduct surveillance of Allied tactics, targets, and formations.....with their cryptoanalytics and wireless intelligence activities and their ability to blinding/jamming Allied radar and navigation systems....it could have been game over.

That's why the constant attacks had to be waged, knowing full well the losses that would come from them.  That's why deception was the Allied game plan.  Even with tens of thousands of planes attacking the Germans around the clock, they could have swept the Allies off the beaches had they known when/where.

One part I hope they touch on were all the German spies in the UK rounded up.  With the codebreakers, they were able to find essentially all of them, turn them with the threat of death, and create their own army of double-agents feeding the Germans what they wanted them to know without tipping them off that their network had been compromised.  That meant certain raids were flying into German defenses who knew they were coming....and they sent them anyway.

Anyway, long winded, but if you like this stuff, it's a MUST read.

This. I read BOL in the early ‘90s. Still have the books. Most definitely a reread for me now that I have a broader knowledge of WW2.

I am too humble to mention such things.  I assumed that it was implied as such.

Functional if not fancy.  We are moving into a new corporate office in 3 weeks.  We will pretty much have to check our shoes at the door in the new "state-of-the-art" facility.  We will all now have 6x8 cubicles to promote "collaboration".  Not a fan particularly since I have had an office with a window and door for about 30 years now.

30 years ago, it was my first day on the job. It was a small company.  I showed up early and the receptionist let me in.  They had a coffee machine exactly like this, as had my previous employer.  At my previous employer, there wasn't a direct water line, so you filled the reservoir with a coffee pot full of water and then brewed.

Seeking to make a good impression, I made coffee exactly as I thought it should be done.  I filled the reservoir with a pot full of water, put the filter and coffee in, pressed brew, and went on about my business.

Because there WAS a direct water line into the machine at this new employer, the machine proceeded to pump the regular amount of water, plus the extra pot that I put in the reservoir, through the filter.  There was coffee all over the kitchen.

Way to make a first impression!

    At least you were trying!

  7. This is the coffee maker where I work. Without fail people will leave less than one cup of coffee in the pot, often time less than a cup in both pots combined. So if you want a cup then you have to finish off what is there and then wait for another pot to make.

It is not hard to make coffee. If you are depleting the volume in a pot to less than a cup, then simply remove the old grounds and filter and replace it before you walk away. No need to add water since it is hard plumbed in. The coffee can brew unattended and be ready for the next person.

  8. I willl be 58 this summer.  There is a group of us that play full-court basketball 3 days a week during our lunch "hour" at a local gym.  When I am in town and not on a business trip I try to play.  The age range is late 20s through early 60s.

Yesterday a youngster in his early 30s played with us for the first time.  As I am standing up from putting my shoes on both of my knees makes this horrible popping, grinding sound.  Without words he turns to me with this WTF look on his face.  I say, "Yes, that was my knees.  You will be there one day.  Getting old sucks."

I get what aggy is trying to do. In no way, if seeing this hat in the wild, would I associate it with aggy. Plus, what are they doing to the “T” with the slight angles on the accents? Stupid and ugly. Looks like a knock off high school hat where they are changing the logo just enough to avoid copyright laws.

I am hoping to make it up that way and also to Craters of the Moon sometime between now and the end of June.  Just trying to carve out some time to do so.  If not then, I may have to push it to October.

    This needs a bump.....

TV Land shows TAGS every afternoon from 3 to 6.

I started watching all of those early series episodes again and they are so fucking good.

Brilliant writing. All of the guest stars are great and of course all of the regulars are as well.

I have a lot more respect for Frances Baviar (Aunt Bee). She is absolutley brilliant in this series.

She also plays a good drunk. There are a couple of episodes where she accidently gets drunk and she is brilliant.

Barney also plays a good drunk in a couple of episodes as well.

This is the greatest 30 minute television show in history in my opinion.

TAGS is a great show with many of the episodes having some sort of ending message.  Barney is a great character.  I also have kudos for the Beverly Hillbillies.  The writing is fantastic on how they subtly say things a bit edgy or racy without overtly saying it.  Some of the episodes could not be made today.

  12. We have electronic message boards throughout our facility with various information scrolling like a slide show.  Every month the company displays the names of the individuals that are celebrating work anniversaries or are having birthdays in the given month.  There are quite a few people that work here that goes by their middle name and not their first name.  The message board only displays their first and last name.  Without fail, each month there are multiple people on the board that has their first name listed but not the name that they commonly go by.  I get it if the employee has worked here less than 3 to 5 years but some of the people up there are 20 to 40 plus year employees.  How hard is it to actually personalize the message?

I’ve driven on 5 continents, in some of the lowest-developed countries in the world. They all have bad traffic, and all have bad manners in traffic. In most of those countries, signs and limits are purely decoration.
But once you get used to the informal rules of the road in any of those countries, they’re fairly predictable and you can be reasonably safe.

IMHO, the problem in Houston (lived there for 20 years) is that people from all those countries, plus ignorant Americans, are thrown together with no common understanding of what the informal rules are. They all try to use the informal rules from wherever they came from, but all of those informal rules are different. You have no idea if the guy approaching from a cross street is going to respect the sign or traffic signal. You have no idea what the expectations are for merging. It’s a complete crapshow.

I have been to over 30 different countries. The only countries that I feel confident driving In consistently is the UK and Australia. China and India are a hard “no”.

  14. I watched it.  I enjoyed it for the most part.  I have not read the book nor did I know anything about this occuring.  So, with that, it kept my "interest" eventhough I had a pretty good idea as to how it was going to turn out once I got into it.  I suppose the "enjoyment" that I got from it was that I learned a bit more about the crooked past on how the Native Americans were treated and taken advantage of.

I was not impressed by Leonardo's facial expression throughout the movie with the severe underbite.  I found it distracting and a bit comical.  Secondly, perhaps shame on me, but I expected the Osages to not have the type of accent that they had in the movie particularly since it was still so early in the last century that this took place.

I would have liked a scene where the Osages took matters into their own hands.  Also curious to know if any of the Osages have continued to be able to keep their wealth from that time period.  Will have to check into that.

It is not a movie that I would take time to watch again but glad that I watched it to learn something new.

I bought a pair of sweatpants/joggers on the Nike app and when they arrived, I found they only have one front pocket. I double checked the pics in the app and it's not a manufacturing error. Who the fuck thinks that pants have "too much" storage, that you need to remove one of the front pockets??? There is a zippered pocket that runs down the side of the leg that you can use for your wallet or phone but it won't work if you want to put your hand in your pocket. Or don't want to have to unzip your pocket just to get your phone out. What a fucking stupid design decision.

I too, have suffered with sweats with just one back pocket. I am left handed so often times the single back pocket is on the wrong side.

So far, so good.  Anybody who has had the vaccine and side-effects: How long did it take for those to appear?

It took about 7 hours or so before it hit me. I was miserable for about 10 to 12 hours. Once the fever broke I was perfectly normal.

The booster did not bother me at all.

I guess maybe I’m in the minority Of opening the garage door everyone gets in and I back out and trust nothing will be there. I need to do my 360° walk around like I do my work truck

Not sure that you are in the minority but if you have kids it is important to do a walk around because they may leave stuff out too.

good one.  footloose is weird though as I can't imagine more than a handful of people on this site growing up in a town in high school where you couldn't have a prom because church.

True. But I grew up in a small town and there was a certain level of what was assumed to be acceptable.  We were all a bit naive to a certain extent.
