  1. Prompted by the L'eggs commercial that was referenced in the ZZ Top thread... Worst sell out? ... and I don't think it's enough to just be a shitty band or a "band" that was from the beginning just a creation of a promoter or record label. The nominees have to be either a great band that sold out to some lame Madison Avenue bullshit commercial *OR* a band that could have made kick-ass music, but instead chose mediocrity and sweet, sweet money. I suppose we could debate whether Aerosmith was still capable of making good music when they made this in 1998... From the band that made "Crazy On You" and "Barracuda"
  2. I'm surprised there wasn't already a thread about this 3-part series. It's about Chester Weger - who was found guilty of a pretty horrific triple murder that occurred in a state park in 1960, his present-day quest for parole, and the ongoing debate around his guilt/innocence. It has the interesting twist that the film maker is the son of the prosecutor. It's one of the better films of this genre that I've seen in the last few years. It's remarkable how many family members/witnesses/jurors/lawyers/etc are still alive and how many participated in the film. I've seen it twice - the second time was when my wife watched it - and the second viewing only reinforced the opinion I formed in the first one. Part 3 drags just a bit, but they packed a lot of information, interviews, and theories into a reasonably short film (each part is under an hour). Mostly the pacing is pretty good, and the information is revealed in a way that may make you change your mind a couple times along the way.
  3. Yes, those tapes of Hillary demanding state-level election officials to “Find me enough votes” to allow Democrats to retain power in 2016… Or when Kerry gathered a mob and sent them to the Capitol to murder a few police officers and injure a hundred more I see what you mean about both sides attacking those halls.
  4. Dude, the loudest voice of the “RIGGED!!!!!” assholes was the fucking President himself. Is that a “fringe?” And are you telling me that there are voices on the left of equal number and positions of power subverting faith in elections in order to overthrow their results? So no, I can’t agree to your “both sides!” argument. I am definitely a patriot, btw.
  5. This thread is an interesting read, but I’m afraid this is the post that speaks to the thread title. The beaches of democracy have been getting shelled by far-right propaganda for years. The actual invasion comes when right-wing lunatics like Gohmert and MTG are joined by state-level opportunists like Abbott and Paxton - and the baseless accusations of fraud are used to subvert the popular vote of the swing states. There were a few principled Republicans (Georgia SOS) who prevented that subversion in 2020, but those people are being actively targeted and replaced in preparation for 2024 and beyond. Edit: There may only be 20-25% of Americans who are buying the Trump-Giuliani-Sidney Powell horse shit, but there are at least that many more who - having been softened by decades of propaganda- don’t want the tax rates to go back to what they were in 2001, and will thus be okay with the coup.
  6. I cannot even get my head around that level of reading. It’s unreal that someone’s brain can digest written music that quickly AND have the hand-eye coordination to play and read simultaneously.
  7. In that Beato video above, Rick says in passing, "Theory is just naming things," and I think that 5-word sentence pretty much sums it up. My mother is one of the best pianists I've ever heard. She was the pianist for whatever church she attended from age 14 until well into her 80's. For decades, strangers would come up to her after a Sunday service and say, "That was the most beautiful offertory I've ever heard!" It happened all the time. She'd be visiting with family or friends after a church service, and I'd see a stranger a few steps away... just sort of waiting their turn to talk to her, and I could tell from their body language what they were waiting to say. She can't read music... except looking at the top left of the clef and counting sharps or flats. She knows from the symbols what the root chord is - and that is all she needs to know. When I was a kid, she might say to me after a service "I just hate when (musical director) starts singing that song in four sharps!" I always thought that was a funny thing to say. She would never say, "I don't like playing in E." I never heard her practice. She'd occasionally go to the piano before we left for church on Sunday morning, and she'd play the offertory one time beginning to end -- flawlessly. But as far as hitting a bunch of wrong notes until she could figure it out... or struggling with a difficult passage over and over again until she got it right... I never heard that. Not once. Anyway, I don't know if it would be fair to say "She doesn't know musical theory." She may not be able to articulate what she is doing, but (like Chad says) she absolutely can speak the language. Theory is just naming things.

  9. Still pissed about that He’s a yard deep in the end zone when ball stripped It’s not even close.
  10. Chris Simms is one of the winningest QB in the history of Texas football.
  11. In one of Mike Leach's last visits to Austin, right before halftime, he instructed his QB to fake a knee (which would have ended the half) and then stand up and throw it deep. Without his knee actually hitting the ground, the refs blew the play dead, and the clock expired. Leach made a grand production out of acting like he'd been jobbed... walked out to midfield with palms up and both arms over his head in a "WTF?" gesture. And you could read the ref's lips saying over and over again, "That's the rule." Leach didn't know the rule either.
  12. Did y’all just talk jimmyjazz out of buying a guitar? The fuck is going on here?
  13. Yeah, that's pretty cool.
  14. All this HSS talk makes me want to restring the old Ibanez (which I almost sold many times, but thankfully never did). Its design is kind of laughably dated and silly. Also, it kind of rocks.
  15. Proud to say that I had to google what the Applebee’s song was. But in the process, I added an abbreviated view to the 47M YouTube views for the video... So I guess I contributed to the fall of civilization.
  16. Maybe I should say not interested in *solving* things… I’ll concede that Gohmert and Cruz are interested in saying or doing anything at all — including literally overturning American democracy— if it gives them personal power and wealth.
  17. Paxton getting re-elected despite multiple felony charges for bribery and financial crimes Gohmert talking about terror babies, George Soros, and filing bullshit lawsuits to overturn elections in other states Bootlicker Ted Cruz now gonna keep up a feud with a fucking puppet And not one of those guy is even remotely interested in things like education, health care, pandemics, or power grids. WTF is wrong with you, Texas?
  18. Welcome. You will get as many opinions as there are guys on this thread. Buy what speaks to you and inspires you. Fender vs Gibson… The differences in playability to a beginner are probably negligible. Personally, I would buy used - as the closets of America are filled with like-new guitars that were once $1200 and now $700. And like Chad says - whatever you pick, pay for a good set up. I look forward to helping you pick out a pre-CBS Strat and a pre-war Martin in a few years.
  19. Any of you degenerates in Austin looking to build a pedal board? I have two old ones to get rid of. Small velcro one that still has a DC Brick and a quartermaster (lets you make loops so that you are turning multiple pedals on and off at once) -- both already mounted on there. You'd be way ahead of the DIY game. Also a bigger hardshell suitcase with a power strip mounted to bottom. Make me a semi-reasonable offer.

    Arc Angels!

I mean... it's a fantastic record. I've probably seen them live 12 or 14 times. Maybe twice in the year the album was released, and then roughly 10-12 reunion shows. Seems like a failure of someone's imagination at this point (not the promoter's, but maybe mine).
  21. I cannot understand why there was such strong backlash against this art form.
  22. I have only followed this trial peripherally, and this thread sporadically... but I have two observations, which likely have already been made (and which are maybe the same observation): 1. We should have learned from the OJ trial that there doesn't have to be a hero on either side. OJ can be a monstrous wife-beater and a murderer and also Mark Fuhrman can by a racist, fascist piece of shit who has no problem with felony perjury about his (apparently quite frequent) use of the N word. Pretty obvious parallels here where the victims (yes... victims) can be shitty people with shady histories who were actively involved in criminal mischief, while simultaneously Rittenhouse was a wildly unstable kid who classmates openly feared for his "school shooter" potential, a person caught on video repeatedly punching a woman in the back of the head in a street fight, a kid illegally carrying a weapon designed to kill a lot of people very quickly, and one who thought it was a great idea to wear a "free as fuck" shirt and flash a white power hand sign while taking his victory laps. The idea of Rittenhouse as a celebrated hero is just horrifying. I mean, I have no doubt that OJ was guilty as fuck, but I'll die before you see me celebrating or justifying Fuhrman. 2. I cannot imagine the outrage if a black family got some welfare money (pandemic-related unemployment check), used the money and an (obviously, illegal) shill buyer to get an assault rifle, and then his mother (who participated in the gun-buying scheme as a shill "owner") drove him across three counties and a state line in order to drop him off at a "Unite the Right" rally, and all of that predictably ended in multiple deaths. Also, "free as fuck" shirts, gang signs posing with members of his same race, etc. I mean, would this thread still break down along the same lines? If not, why?
