  1. Oh, and one of the best things we ever did (not really knowing how well it would turn out) was to buy the boy a "project" go-kart for his birthday when he was 13 or so.  It ran, and he could drive it around and have fun with it.  But it needed work and tuning (it really was a homemade kart, so some aspects of it did not perform optimally).  We went to Harbor Freight, and I bought him his own set of tools.  And then told him and his friends that they were free to work on it to their hearts' content.  He started out griping about it, but eventually really got into it.  He's now 21, and when he and his friends come home of Christmas and such, one of the things they do is get together to tinker with the go-kart, which they have turned into a semi-armored car.  One of his friends SO got into it that he now has a side hustle of buying busted up go-karts, rehabbing them, then flipping them for a profit.  They get their knuckles scraped and hands oily and dirty, and know how to take apart small engines, all kinds of stuff.  AND, it provided them a fun diversion for years.
Give a kid a project that they can have fun with, and sometimes, they'll run with it.  Maybe we got lucky, but it turned out to be a good thing.  I'm fucking sick of the kart and all the parts and shit taking up half my garage, though.

I for one would gladly swap space currently reserved in my garage for Christmas shit for a bunch of fixer upper go karts.

  2. I lucked into free GA tickets from Little Steven to the Springsteen show in San Francisco last night and it was an epic night for my wife, daughter, and me (our son missed out because he was away on a school trip).
The show itself was incredible. It was our first Springsteen concert and I’m kicking myself for not attending one when I was younger.
During the show, Little Steven gestured for me to give him the hat I was wearing. He and Bruce took turns wearing it for nearly an entire song.
To make the night even crazier, Bruce handed my daughter his harmonica after playing it.

  3. I have a theory, based partly on reading Keith’s autobiography, that Mick and Keith have lived a life that few if any others in human history have been able to live.

Better than filthy rich billionaires because they are worshiped and they still have plenty of money. Better than real royalty or political leaders because they don’t have the responsibility to lead, but they are absolutely cultural royalty. Worshiped all over the world, literally everyone you meet will fall all themselves to do whatever you want/need/etc. There is no place you go that you aren’t the coolest person in the room. And all you have to do in return is rock. They were among the first true rockstars, probably the biggest ever, and managed to keep it going for what 60 years?

Just trying to think of anyone else in human history who’s had that kind of life experience. Not many.

  4. I'm not saying that he was useless to the Beatles and that they would have been as good with someone else, but I AM saying that the credit he gets is excessive.  George and Paul were better musicians, singers, and songwriters.  Ringo was a better musician and singer.  To many people, John Lennon is the definitive Beatle.  To me, he's the guy that brings the least to the band.

That may be true individually. But to me the thing about music is that when you bring the right pieces together 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 > 4. For the Beatles 1+1+1+1=~27. That’s the unexplainable magic that makes great music great.

Individually is Lennon the third best? Maybe. Would they be The Beatles without him? No.
