  1. I was talking to a doctor in a meeting a couple of weeks ago and he considers our current state of health a national security issue. He was talking about obesity in addition to other things such as lack of exercise. He contends that there will be other pandemics that come along in our lifetimes as the world is becoming more interconnected. The US is at greater risk to economic shutdowns for prolonged periods than other countries due to our lack of overall health. He did give us credit for taking on smoking though.
  2. Thanksgiving is about to wipe the olds out, unfortunately. I can’t explain the psychology behind it but most of the older people I talk to in Travis/Wilco don’t think they will get it from their friends and family. They might be inviting a couple of less random friends of the family, but it’s still going to be bad. We are quarantining for a week (all I can do with work) and going to visit the in-laws just to stop them from having half of Houston over. Literally playing gatekeeper because my FIL would 100% die from this. They aren’t anti-maskers or anything but just can’t help themselves if a friend wants to come over. I will be really interested in the hospital numbers and death totals around December 4th and beyond. Hopefully I’m wrong about all of this.
  3. If/when we go all virtual, TEA is going to make us make up half of the instructional minutes, even though those are all days we are working. We are looking at just doing one week to avoid adding too many more days. We can play games and add a few minutes to each day to make up for most of it. I wish tea would understand that we are trying to operate in a pandemic with a shit load of our kids traveling over the next week. We need an additional week to figure out who is dragging covid back home with them to keep everybody safe. Stop acting like we are trying to skirt our responsibilities.
  4. We have tons of cases in the community surrounding my school but 0 at school. Some students have tested positive but they were all doing virtual anyway. The biggest risk factors seem to be sports practice, dance groups, and kids that wear a mask/distance all day at school only to go play in a pile of 30 kids after school.
  5. Beer brewing barron barrels buddy and is behind bars?
  6. Hearing through the grapevine at work that Travis county is going to announce stage 4 tomorrow. We think we can still keep our school open to the 25% of students that most need to be there. We are sending students home over the break with all of their belongings because making hundreds of deliveries sucks.
  7. Only ones I’ve got so far is trebek and John Lewis while guys like rush are still around. What a kick in the dick.
  8. At least they’re consistent?
  9. And then a higher court will reverse it. Even in the shitshow that is 2020, they are not going to toss 140,000 legally cast votes out.
  10. They aren’t going to throw the votes out. But if they do, shit is going to burn, and I’m ok with that. I would be disappointed if people didn’t riot.
  11. All of these personal stories typically don’t mean much but I could really see something being in play here. I don’t know a single person voting for trump that didn’t in 2016. I know quite a few that voted for Biden that didn’t last time. One hadn’t voted in 20 years.
  12. Same
  13. Based on what I’m seeing here in Wilco, I’m going to predict a Biden victory for the county. I will also predict that he beats Betos margin of victory of 2.8%. This area took a hard left turn after 2016 and isn’t going to look back. Lots of Austin type voters up here now that are college educated and can afford a 450k house but not a 900k one in Austin.
  14. Obviously a decline was expected. Is this concerning or about the rate you expected?
  15. Don’t underestimate the last minute comey surprise in 2016. You won’t see something like that this year, and even if you did, all the Dems will have already voted early or by mail.
  16. Would 400k from today through Saturday be a reasonable goal for Harris?
  17. Yeah, I have the same wondering about overall turnout. Are we going to see the same turnout over a longer period of time or does more days = more voters? Obviously we could see higher turnout because of trump so it’s impossible to isolate the variable, but it’s still interesting.
  18. Talked to a very anti politics friend yesterday who hadn’t voted in 20 years. Last week he voted for Biden. Nothing down ballot, just placed one vote and walked out. Really wondering if all of these anecdotes will add up to something monumental. I have yet to hear about a HRC voter flipping to trump.
  19. I used to work with a lot of Vietnamese families. Many have a very idealized view of America and are very patriotic. A lot of the GOP propaganda and flag waving resonates with them. Same with the bootstrap mentality because so many of them came from nothing and managed to scratch out a middle class life. Social justice, lgbtq issues and other dem platform issues just weren’t that important to them. What are we thinking for Harris county turnout M-F this week? Any more days over 100k or is it going to dwindle some?
  20. Bucy. I’m just east of Avery Ranch.
  21. I got the distinct impression those people were there for the same reason I was. Vote this motherfucker out. It was also about 60-40 women. I don’t know if we will get over the hump statewide, but I think it will be close enough to call Texas purple from now on and it will achieve battleground status. The makeup of the legislature, specifically the house, could very well change this time.
  22. I live in Wilco and it feels like Biden will win the county to me. My part of Wilco was almost exactly 50/50 in 2016 and I can almost assure you that Biden will win my hood this time. Things are changing fast here. My state rep is a first term dem and he has done a ton of voter engagement work. Voted after work yesterday and the line was diverse and educated.
  23. Was surprised to see that HRC only won bexar county by 13% in 2016. That is a real opportunity for improvement this time in terms of total votes and the actual margin. I assume that as turnout goes up, the margin will as well. Just need a full force effort to get San Antonio to the polls the same way Houston is.
  24. That’s awesome. Anybody have similar stats for other major counties?
