The FCC's Fairness Doctrine required broadcast media outlets to not only cover controversial topics but fairly report differing viewpoints on those topics.  Given that the average American is loathe to actually read, this was a pretty effective way to reach the masses in an unbiased manner.  Whether this drove people towards the center is not particularly clear.

Of course, the FCC repealed this doctrine in 1987, and here we are, permafucked.

The repeal of the fairness doctrine would have happened in practice anyway as cable news was really the driver of partisanship in media. The FCC only has authority over public airwaves so I would imagine we'd be in the same place regardless.

I don't think the answer is / ever was forcing fairness in ideas.

I think the real issue is that while we've democratized voting and information (i.e. the internet), we've enacted incredibly un-democratic $ policy.

The trickle down economics /  tax cutting / $ = speech has allowed for a relative few to control and manipulate messaging.

I'd argue we were always as dumb as this. There just wasn't an ability to have so few controlling the message to persuade the dumbs.

They signed with Texags and said it was because of their great journalism. They may have severed the relationship (I think they did at least)  but nobody that stupid and/or blatantly greedy will ever get my money if I can get their shit for free. Ever.

    That plus Mandel is annoying.

You'd hope they would have dropped aggy when they got that NY times $$$.

    Mandel is annoying yes.

But they do a decent enough job covering the Astros and it's a lot cheaper than a chronicle subscription

Getting the piss shocked out of me by touching the tv was far worse than the monsters.

I worked at Gallery Furniture between semesters my freshman year at UT.

Somehow I was able to work in the electronics area bc I was into Plasma TV’s and surround sound systems as one is when you’re 18 year old and have no $, etc and selling furniture was boring to me.

Anyhow, I remember selling that 40” Sony which was the largest tube TV at the time and maybe the largest tube tv ever made.

My gawd that was fucking heavy. I had to deliver that bastard and of course it was for the second story game room.

I think my hands are still deformed to this day from the plastic frame cutting into my hands as we had to carry that thing up the stairs.

1.) It looks like both are smuggling a bag of oranges in the leg of their pants.

2.)There’s so much ass stuffed in those pants that I’m pretty sure that hole near her calf is a rip in the space time continuum.

3.) The leggings on the right were actually an opaque black before she put them on.

    4.) They’re so big it’s spelled camel T-O-W

You have to have a margin trading account and hope your brokerage has shares to "borrow".  Usually they don't for blatant scam stocks like this.  Or if they do, they charge a ridiculous interest rate on the shares you are borrowing.  Options are another way to bet on a stock's downfall, but they normally aren't available right out the gate.  I have no idea if there are options on DJT already or not and refuse to even look at that POS.

    Googled DJT puts.

I’ve never purchased puts either, but Reddit tells me that they’re crazy expensive b/c everyone knows that this stock is going to 0.

That said, even the Reddit guys seem to be weary of touching it. Now that says something.

Wife was out this morning, so I had the kids do spring cleaning with me - regular chores, but also getting rid of old toys and other junk.

There's a trash bag and a donate box. The kids occasionally ask about a few items, but otherwise they have it under control, and no drama at all.

Then the wife comes home and starts digging through the trash, pulling stuff out, and aggressively asking the kids why they threw things out. Lots of yelling and crying ensues.

    Fuck me.

It's 9:40 right now, and behind me, she's digging through the trash bag again...

Due to the fact that my wife moved every 2 years growing up, she’s a purger.

My parents are a mm away from being hoarders. It’s not a compulsion as much as just being lazy.

But what’s great is when she goes into purge mode and what it does to my daughters, See, they got the heterozygous version of the dominant hoarder genes (I think that works?).

I know it’s going down when my oldest screams from upstairs in hysterics :

”Why are you always trying to throw away our memories!!!!!!”

I laugh from my seat on the couch. But my joy is short lived.

When purge-a-tron 5000 return downstairs without her full lb of flesh I get blamed for ruining our children and I must then wander the sex desert like Moses for much longer than my usual camel-like existence,

Yeah, I definitely prefer the never ending annual increase in property taxes that I have to pay someone to protest every year.

    It indeed sucks.

Most employees at big box hardware stores have no idea what hardware is. Here’s a guy asking them where left-handed hammers are.

    This dude is a dick.

If you want help at any hardware store you ask the old codger or just go to an Ace / True Value. Home Depot is for folks who already know what they want or are looking for the lowest price. You don’t get both real help and the lowest price IMO.

The fact that this man was able to flag down 3 people at a Home Depot is a miracle and what did he do? Fucking took up their time asking a stupid question. I’ll say it again, total dick move.

That's true if you live in TX.

I live in CA where the property tax is based on your purchase price, and property values aren't assessed every year.

So this doesn't help me at all.

Had no idea Cali did things like that.

That west coast is all kinds of wack-a-doo

My wife is 45. This past weekend was the first time she ever heard the phrase "righty tighty lefty loosy".

She broke the garage door a few months ago. Knocked it off the track and the vertical channels got bent. Door was wedged crooked about halfway down. One roller bracket got so twisted I had to cut it just so I could get the door shut or risk having thieves stealing all of my tools and shit. I ordered all the parts to fix it and have been busy with work so haven’t had time to fix it until this past weekend.

Since she broke it, and I needed a 2nd set of hands to pull the panels off and put them back in, I made her help me. I have an old car in the garage I'm restoring so if course it was in the way. I was taking out hinge bolts on one side of the car, then handed her the socket wrench to take out the two bolts on her side.

I stood there and watched as she rotated the socket wrench the wrong way - click click click click - for a good 2-3 minutes. I kept telling her to turn it the other way but she couldn't figure it out. "It's not turning." I had to walk around the car and show her how a socket wrench works.

Later when we're reassembling, she kept trying to tighten a bolt with the wrench set to loosen. This was after I had already shown her how to switch it. "You need to come do this one. I can't get it tighten."

Seriously - how do you live 45 years and not understand which direction to turn something to tighten or loosen it? She's changed light bulbs before.

    Rules.

Using context clues…. I think I can help.

My next door neighbors are moving and listed their house about $100K below what Zillow, Redfin and realtor.com said the house is worth.

Not that I’m plannning to move any time soon. But it hurts any potential sellers in the neighborhood.

If you’re not moving anytime soon and this sells, then they did you a favor.

use it as a comp when protesting your appraisal and save some $ in your property taxes.

  13. Literally just Lalo Tequila and Topo Chico.

    Clean.

    Bubbly.

I guess you can squeeze a lime into it to make a ranch water.... but dammit if I don't just like the taste of the tequila.

Lalo is now just $38 at Total Wine b/c agave prices plummeted.

No better blanco tequila for the price IMO.

I don't believe many men even realize how difficult it can be for a woman sitting in an exam room regardless of whether the physician is male or female due to personal biases about women's health in general. I don't know if it relates to the common perception that 'women are EmOtiOnaL' and therefore are not to be believed or are stupid when they have concerns, questions, or are in pain but when I see the stats that specifically address women of color and health outcomes as compared to others I'm not surprised. I'm in a privileged class and run into this, I cannot imagine the obstacles that those women must face in finding treatment.

It isn't all physicians/PAs/etc and the other issues with healthcare in general (shortages, corporate interference, insurance, etc) but to your point, Satchel, there is a very long history of men simultaneously ignoring women's health and yet regulating it when it was convenient for them to do so.

    We’re here for you.

    You sound pretty upset.

I’ll tell you what, we’ll keep the topic going while you go to the store.

    Go buy yourself nice.

That way you’ll be recharged by dinner time.

I bet your cooking tastes so much better when you’re rested and happy.

I'm not passing sentence one way or the other right now.  Just a lot of questions.  Trevor Bauer got tried in the court of public opinion and was found guilty, despite the fact that he very well may have been more of the victim in his case, despite what people may think of him personally.

It is amazing that insufferable assholes are not extended the same latitude as a generational talent not seen in a hundred years or so.
