Thanks!  The whole you can’t do somethings physically you use to be able to is just now hitting me so I guess I had a good run, I was definitely use to bouncing back quicker.  I started with cardio heavy, treadmill, hot yoga and spin classes at the gym and an extreme lifestyle and calorie intake change but kept the protein intake pretty high but not high enough.  I’m adding in more lifting now and meeting a trainer once a week and I am using MyFitnessPal.  Going to throw in more off days of just walking or rucking when I get really sore.  Did the whole bmi test and all the measurements when I started with the trainer a couple weeks ago and with my frame and body fat % I only have 15 more I can realistically lose to be at my ideal weight. Those charts that say at 6’2 I should weigh 180 lbs are full of shit.  Definitely something I want to stick to going forward, too many periods of being drunk and fat between workout stints in the past.  Thanks for all the input everyone!

Fuck yeah for you!  Everybody’s body is different, so find what works for you. And we’re all coming from different places when we’re passing along advice and are biased towards what works for us.

For reference, I’m pushing 50 and have never been out of shape.  And I’ve always favored consistency (over decades) over max effort. Consistency means avoiding injuries and dragging your ass to the gym (or whatever workout) when you don’t want to, knowing a half ass workout is infinitely better than a no ass workout.

Also, as you continue your fitness journey, mix it up and try new things (kettlebells, calisthenics, steel mace, body weight exercises, rings, static holds, running, swimming, cycling etc)   That helps avoid injuries and burnout and gives us differing modalities to lean on as our bodies change over the next 30 plus years.

Good luck and keep it up!

Down from 252 mid January to 232 now. I’ve been eating really clean low carb and going to the gym a minimum of 5 days a week for a hour (a good amount of effort but nothing crazy). I’m 45 and hadn’t workout in about a year in a half before January, my question is does the non stop soreness ever stop?  I got sore before after starting back at the gym again but not to this level after two months, I’m taking aminos, plenty of electrolytes, vitamins.  I feel like those old football players or wrestlers in the documentaries walking all jacked up and sore going into the gym to workout.  It definitely wasn’t this bad a couple years ago.

First of all congrats! But take a few days or a week off.  The gym is for breaking your muscles down, and the off days are for building them back up.  You could try rucking during your off week.

Also, you’re a middle aged man, train for the next 30-40 years; not short term gains.  Grinding is good, but don’t grind yourself down.

will never understand that take. for the past 25 years of living in austin it's consistently been one of my favorite weeks of the year.

Serious question, how can you comment on his take if you didn’t read it?

Agree that SXSW is one of the best weeks in Austin. But sxsw music isn’t what it used to be. Yeah, I know nothing is, but the days of Vans renting out Mohawk for a week and bringing in big name bands are long gone. (Same with Red Bull House and Fader Fort) The money and sponsors just aren’t there. It’s a shame for Austin and the venues that counted on sxsw.

I don’t think the blame lies solely with sxsw though. Tastes change (EDM and hip hop vs guitar oriented music) and being associated with a mass casualty event is never good.  I’m glad I got to enjoy it as long as I did, and I’ll miss what it was. Best case we get a locally driven experience with more things like SX San Jose and SoCo stomp. Worst case is it’s one more thing that Austin doesn’t have anymore.

The one thing I really noticed this weekend was a LOT fewer international travelers.  Like maybe 80+% fewer, where on SoCo they have made up a lot the last few years.  So many fewer I was trying to think of US companies with a lot of exposure to international travel. OR is it that folks are simply pulling back on spending in the US?   It was crowded of course, but not as crowded as last year.  I want to see what the economic impact was of SXSW compared to last year after the sales taxes are tallied.

Restos at 1 pm at the SoCo Stomp, be there or be square!

One of the obvious things to me was the lack of sponsors. In years past there were a ton of sponsors (car, beer, clothing, energy drink, media etc) on the sxsw signage at the venues. This year there were three: Rivian, JBL and the Austin Chronicle.

It’s the internet, we got all the time in the world for a long story.

But not knowing the story, it was probably a good call. There’s a reason the p bass is the most popular and most recorded bass by far, lack of finickiness being a big one.

These guys were GREAT at 13th Floor.  Some of the other bands, not so much.  Snotty garage rock, tight as hell, somewhere between Oasis and The Stooges.

Thanks for this one. They’ve got a shot ton of shows the next couple of days. I’ll check them out.

You can't really negotiate severence. Take it and the money or don't is the unfortunate thing.

Negotiated exits are different, but you either get punches in your tough shit card or money.

Severance agreements aren’t just about the money but about what he gives up for taking that money. The agreement may call for him to forgo his right to collect unemployment insurance or a right to pursue some other cause of action related to his termination or whatever else the company wants to include.

  8. Regarding the Sweet 16, there’s a huge difference between having a sweet 16 caliber season (not a bubble team, ranked well inside the top 25, fun to watch, and an overall level of excitement around the program, etc.) and a bubble team that with some luck and a favorable draw makes the tournament and the sweet 16.

Just because we’re not the former doesn’t mean we can’t be the latter. And just because a coach makes the sweet 16 doesn’t mean he’s a sweet 16 caliber coach (by the above definition)

You can cook with more spices, I was on a low histamine diet too for long covid, it’s even more strict. In fact many spices are anti-inflammatory too.

you can’t go wrong counting calories but honestly I would focus on eating the right food first. Then work on calorie reduction if you are having a problem after 2-3 weeks.

the thing is, getting off processed food, added sugar, animal based saturated fat takes tremendous effort for a couple of weeks. And your appetite will be sky high for a while as you come off that dependency.

about 3 weeks in you’ll start craving natural foods and loving how they taste. I would crave scrambled eggs and potatoes like you could not imagine. Some nights I had to have broccoli. I’d even make a special trip to the store to get it.  I would devour okra in the afternoons. I would eat an entire personal watermelon multiple times a week.

the key is to be real and not fudge. 5g or less of added sugar per day, preferably 1-2g. Zero processed carbs. No butter, no steak, chicken skin, or bacon, avoid cheese and dairy at first. Just get your system off the crap as soon as possible.

Lean heavy on fruits and vegetables. It’s impossible to over eat broccoli and sweet potatoes (as an example). You can’t do it. They are not calorie dense. What you can’t do is eat few veggies and fruit and lean on protein and cheeses. The foundation of anti-inflammatory is lots and lots of vegetables and fruit.

eating out even the healthy stuff is a trap imo. Cook at home that’s the only way you know it’s good food.

once you’re on the diet then if you aren’t losing weight count calories.

once you are losing weight you can add milk and cheese, yogurt and some tiny minuscule added sugar cheats but you still want to be 5g or less.

the final piece has nothing to do with weight loss but round it out with a good supplement game especially stuff that’s good for your brain and nervous system, exercise, sleep, invest in your relationships and then at that point you are firing on all cylinders for a maximum health span and a longer life.

All of this, although dairy has never been a big issue for me. I would also add that it’s pretty hard to change your diet to something like this AND calorie count. So sharpen up what you eat and then focus on how much you eat.

  10. I think it would be cool if we had a coach whose team played hard and smart even as they went through the growing pains that come with NIL/portal era roster churn. Throw in a consistent/identifiable offensive philosophy and that’d be damn near mind blowing.

I’d rather not have to watch a team get blown out playing inconsistent, ugly basketball and spend the season hoping they get it together in time for a tourney run.

holy shit.  I figured this was a never again type of thing.  I can't believe I am going to miss this. sucks.

Both shows sold out at $105 face value tickets. Good for the gourds. Just such a damn good band. Saw them a ton back in the 90s.

Read an interview with Jimmy Smith a few years ago (bassist, and vocals and songwriter with Kevin Russell) and he couldn’t get any traction post Gourds. But then I listened to some of his stuff and it makes sense that he couldn’t get any traction.

Are you paying attention?  Since when does the "break shit to cause a crisis you already have a pre-determined solution for" playbook make any sense?

Agreed. Never underestimate the ability of people to believe what they want to believe…including message board posters.

You diminish fan support by breaking shit and then use that diminished support as the impetus for ramping up the rhetoric about relocating the franchise to Vegas with a "but we might ya know reconsider that decision if you would think about legalizing gambling here and help us re-energize fan interest and support (that we helped kill)"

That doesn’t make any sense. Reducing fan support also reduces their political capital (ie public goodwill) and a shit ass franchise has way less leverage than a good one.

Have an MRI scheduled for next week.  X-ray showed some reason for concern down at the lumbar/sacral area.  So, we'll see.  I've now had 24 hours on pain meds and muscle relaxers, and I'd say my pain level went from an 8+ to a 2-3, depending on my position.  So, really grateful for that.

But really worried about what they'll find and what the issue is.

My wife is convinced that this is entirely stress-related.  It began in the moments after my father's death on Monday night, as I was sitting in his chilly garage and dealing with EMTs, law enforcement, and of course...the fact that my father was dead in the other room.  Because otherwise, I have no idea what could have triggered it.  No physical trauma, popping, nothing.

    What a fucking week.

I highly recommend Back Mechanic by Stuart McGill.  Start doing his big three exercises, which strengthen the small muscles below your erectors.  Also, as he notes in the book and my Orthopedist and PT echoed, imaging only goes so far to reveal the source of back pain.  Sometimes an MRI shows what looks to be a seriously messed up back but the person has no issues, pain or restriction on range of motion.

Good luck and sorry about your father.

I worked with Tom for a while about 20 years ago. He was dangerously witty and this TexAgs ambush will make him must-watch-TV on any future aggy games that he calls.  I think they just poked a bear that we can sit back and enjoy for the next 10 years.

He clearly knew what he was getting into, so it’s hard to call that an ambush. But it was an exceedingly bad look for aggy and was further confirmation of their little brother status.

Is there any way we can get him on here to get his insights on that joke of an interview?

A mid season firing wouldn’t be a bad idea to get a start on the search

And that’s why you’re a poster on a message board and not an AD. Do you really think CDC won’t begin the search in earnest until RT is fired?  Do you think an extra 2ish months of speculation surrounding who our next coach will be will benefit us or our next coach?

There’s a reason CDC kept Pierce’s firing under wraps as long as possible.  I imagine the process for our next basketball coach will be similar and there’s only a few days between RT’s firing and the announcement of our new coach.
