Yeah, but he was an architect, previous to his career as a prophet

Rumors Steiner is out at Haas.  Apparently references to him have been removed from the website.  I have not done fact checking on this.

    Aww man.

I was wondering if there were any visual/graphic aids that depicted the current F1 teams and how they'd evolved from one name/ownership group to another over time, and found this embedded on reddit.  Of course it has WAY more than just the current teams, it appears to have every F1 team, ever, including plenty of one-year wonders.  Pretty cool.

    Which part?

That we are training kids to regurgitate and not have their own ideas. Couldn't be further from the truth.

Not to derail the thread about how Ackman sucks to the topic of plagiarism, but it is an interesting topic. Especially with future implications and generative AI.

In this case, it's also interesting because unless you have done original research and authored scholarship (and I know we have more than a few academics that post here), most people have a very elementary understanding of plagiarism. I'm seeing it on twitter where people think all accusations of plagiarism are equal, with the most advanced writing they've ever done is their 10th grade research paper.

And I'm reminded of when Gladwell had his own plagiarism scandal (as hackneyed as he may be, the point remains): https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2004/11/22/something-borrowed-plagiarism

So I am on the board on the trustees at one of our Universities here, and the board meeting last fall had quite a bit of insight into AI and the implications in academia. I actually quite enjoyed the presentations we had, they were pretty illuminating. But Anis characterization is not correct. AI will be there, but it's going to be a tool in the toolbox. Ideas are always going to be paramount.

Sorry, I've been all over this thread looking for the right bike (for me). I haven't been on a road bike in over 30 years, Been riding mountain bikes since then, but recently starting riding a paved trail that goes past my house to the beach. So far I've only gotten about 10 miles on my mountain bike. First 5 miles is easy, the riding a slight incline on the way back has been a bitch with my 1x low gearing.

The three bikes I have in contention now are:

    1. Trek Domane SL6 (carbon) with Ultera group set - on sale and can get it today for $3000
    2. Trek Domane AL5 (aluminum) with 105 group set, can get this today at $2000
    3. Canyon Endurace CF7 (carbon) with 105 group set - $2200 but not sure when i'll be available again

The first one seems like a no brainer, but it's also $800-$1000 more than the other 2. I'll be new to cycling, and honestly not sure how much I'll be riding. Thoughts?

The Canyon is probably the sweet spot tbh

How do you pick which one to ride?

Well, the old steel one is at my shop, one carbon is on the trainer, the other carbon has no wheels since I put them on my new whip, one aluminum is my MTB, so it's just a choice between two. And right now I'm leaning to the Roadmachine X as it's grimy as hell this time of year, plus I'm hitting some gravel trails.

The other steel bike at the shop is an early 70s Gitane. It is pretty sweet actually,  I really should ride it some.

    • So national championship game that I'm actually interested to watch because it's not some conglomerate of Alabamaohiostateclemsongeorgia.
    • NFL playoffs (by far the best playoffs of any sport and I'm not a huge NFL fan)
    • Daytona
    • Start of F1 season

Not a bad next few weeks

I agree on the first point that this is the most compelling championship game in ages, and I'm an Alabama fan. But I still probably won't watch. I didn't even watch Alabama's last win in the championship game.

    The last two, yeehaw boys.

This board’s tone (and probably overall activity) changes quite a bit depending on how well our favorite sports teams are doing as well.  We tend to get pretty surly with one another when things go sideways in sports, and when things are going well, we find other things to do, or we gloss over a lot of stuff that might trigger some of us.

    At least that’s my theory.

Seems like the opposite to me

Some record stores used to have a huge (physical) catalog of music that you had to use to learn an artists' discography, or to search by song title. It used to be the only way to search but you needed to know the artist or song title to use it. It existed before the best buys of the world but I'm not sure when it went away and I can't remember what it was called. Absolutely massive though, with a large metal holder that held all the pages together, and stores would regularly be sent pages to add to it.

I bought my first cassette, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, this way. Went into Mother's Music and got out the book. It was like a mega phone book

Use Siri or something to make yourself a voice note at the moment you hear something you want to play.

I make extensive use of voice notes on my phone for original song ideas too. Just toss the phone on my knee while I twiddle out a riff or progression
