France has been incredibly underwhelming so far.  3 goals in 3 games with that talent?

    Argentina can absolutely beat them.

My thought, too.   Thought Argentina looked pretty good for most of today's match.

Far be it for me to ever take a position even vaguely supportive of something hpslugga is doing, but what’s wrong with being petty? I thought this was the Internet, and a college football board, to boot. If we can’t be petty, what is left, sir?

I'm okay with petty.  but hornfans was a long time ago.  remembering petty arguments from that time period is what most impressed me.

I remember that one because it contained an outrageous element, namely the “I have a higher football IQ than all of you” line. It’s the same reason that if I were to utter the name “traveshamockery,” anyone familiar with that name would almost instantly associate it with “oh yeah, the kstate fan that wouldn’t stop bragging about Jordy Nelson.”

    fair points

  4. pretty easy to roast in the oven and it is delicious, better than those overcooked things from HEB (and I buy those on occasion, too).

I think the key is to buy smaller birds (we get them at Whole Foods).  I like to put lemon in cavity and some butter under the skin.  healthy does of salt and Boom.

Tell me who and how. Sure, Investment bankers made some fees but not much. Money raised was mostly private placements with the Waltons, Murdoch, Slim, Cox, Oppenheimer, DeVos. There were no investor shares sold in secondary raises, only capital stock. . Holmes salary was mid six figures. I’m sure 3rd party sales were severely restricted if allowed at all.

you may be right.  I was assuming advisor and legal fees to be huge on the fundings.  if all private placement as you say, then maybe not as much.  usually in these deals (my knowledge is limited, admittedly), initial investors are releasing stakes to the following groups.

No, they didn't. Pretty much everyone who invested in this lost their ass.

so advisors and lawyers weren't billing their time during those rounds of fundraising?  certain investors weren't selling their stakes or portions of in those rounds?

I'm not involved but would be surprised if either of the above were not true.

This is why I think Portugal has a shot no matter who they play. Both Peru and Morocco were great box-to-box in this tournament, but lacked the finishing class that was needed to advance in this tournament. Ronaldo is a cheat code. I don't even think Portugal is that good, but it's not like anybody has been lights out in this tournament except for Belgium who played one of the worst teams in the tournament. It's been a lot of defensive soccer and a lot of one goal games and that gives the team with the best finisher a fighting chance in any game.

Teams always play defense early in WC play, that's why there are so many one goal games.  an L is killer, W or D are okay for most.

The venture capitalists never dumped. They couldn’t. The company was never publicly traded and money raised went to the company not investors. These “vultures” lost hundreds of millions.

while no IPO, people made a lot of money.  don't think otherwise

Anyone else watching Collateral?  Started last week when I had nothing in the queue that the wife wanted to see.  Started out good but has gotten a little preachy.  One more episode to go.

Have always been a fan of Carey Mulligan.

A little preachy, but yeah, I liked it.

There was a poster from the old Hornfans days that went by the name Nuclear Bear who honestly believed that cloud of feculent matter was, in his words, "the greatest tight end in the history of college football." Part of me wishes his stupid ass was still around just so we could be entertained by his verbal effluvia attempting to defend that clown.

How many years ago was that?  Do you recall every petty internet football argument you ever participated in?  because arguing about great college TE's is pretty high on the "petty" scale.

I was told there aren’t anymore dads and daughters Girl Scout campouts anymore, you know because #metoo and all.

At least we haven’t had any in the 5 years I’ve had a Girl Scout.

A friend did these with his daughter.  it wasn't girl scouts it was through the YMCA.  He told me the first year a few guys brought some stuff.   He said the 2nd year it was like a frat party, they had booze everywhere and most of the dads spent 48 hours completely hammered.  said it was pretty hilarious.

Touche...To each their own.  Some of the hill country juice I tried years back was not drinkable.  I have heard decent things about Calais.

I've had a lot of awful hill country wine.  Just saying there are some producers doing much better work recently than even 5 years ago.  QPR still isn't great.

Still nowhere near age quality of Napa.  And the high-end makers, especially the small production guys, are not using "additives and manipulations."  What wine are you referring to?

First, I wasn't comparing any Texas wine to Spottswoode or stuff like that in Napa.   Secondly, regarding ageability, who knows, as that story has a long way to go to be told for Texas wines.  In general I would agree with you, but Texas wine making is in its infancy.

a lot of Napa wine, even some pretty high end stuff, has some heavy handed manipulation. There are a lot of processes to manipulate color, alc levels, acidity, etc.  Obviously, many don't, too, but the large scale production stuff I'm talking about.

Just finished the Staircase. Thought it did a good job of covering it and access to Peterson. I think he’s guilty but didn’t think State proved he did it. Not to mention the whole making up evidence corruption thing.

    Spoiler

almost finished with this,   fascinating series just because of how the case was laid out and his conviction

I agree take a trip west to......California or Oregon! The Texas wine scene is horribad. It’s astounding what people will pay for crappy Texas wine!

horribad is a bit strong.   lots more serious winemakers and growers now than even just 5 years ago.   fairly rapid progress.   lots of shit in Cali, too, they just spend a lot of money on additives and manipulations to get that awesome spiked grape juice America so loves.

We loved Calais.  Did that one, William Chris, and Kuhlman to start the day and were very impressed.  Hilmy was also good.  After that our pallets were pretty done so we called it a day and ended with cocktails at The Stable (recommended).

I liked the Stable, too.   nice little spot

Lets start with a few questions.  What impresses you?  Do you like wine?  Which types ?  Would you say you favor a Gewurtztraminer or a Cab?

Really, the point is to keep going/trying until you find what you like.  I'd start with a Yates, Hilmy or Will Chris, but you might like the Rose at Vinovium.  Who knows?

Good list.  I'd add Inwood.   Calais can be interesting, too, if you get a reservation/time.  Right now, best Texas wines I had were some viognier blends and mourvedre from high plains.

I did taste some wines from Fall Creek recently, mostly grown fruit in Hill Country and I thought they were pretty darn good.  Not sure on price point.

The original double elimination format was better, not two brackets just straight up undefeateds in the winner bracket three straight rounds and a massive dog fight in the losers bracket. The drama in the losers bracket was so intense. No reset after surviving a 4 team bracket, you had to make it all the way through perfect including beating an undefeated twice in a row at the end to win the title.

I liked that old way better, too.  Same format for 8 regionals, too, which was pretty cool.

We did Kata Robata Monday night and went early for the happy hour specials (ends at 6:30) since my son is away at camp and hates sushi but my 6 year old daughter loves it.  Their Monday happy hour has some outstanding values and wine by the glass is also half price.  They have a good Sancerre my wife likes by the glass.  We got out with the tip for less than $100 and ordered a ton of food.

definitely a good way to do it.
