Nina Compton's NOLA restaurant Compere Lapin just won the James beard award, FWIW.

Interesting.  I enjoyed my one meal there (brunch), but it didn't wow me.  really snobby service which I found kinda funny for some reason.

She has new spot in Bywater in the old Mariza location.  It looks good, too.

Even John and Lance have failed to recreate the magic they once had. Charlie is the only one I listen to anymore, along with a little of Sean, Ted and Rich.

disagree.   97.5 in the am is pretty solid and leaps and bounds better than any other show.

I do like Charlie, 2 hours is a good dose of him.

I primarily like Napa cabs right now.  Don't care for ton41s of tannins.  Like Duckhorn merlot a lot.  Caymus is good.  I like Abstract for more of an everyday drinker.   Meiomi Pinot is decent.

Would be willing to venture out to other kinds,  but that is what I like at the moment.

for Napa, I like Frog's Leap Rutherford cab.  around $45, I think, and consistently solid in that Napa flavor profile.  If you are looking to stay away from the high tannin flavor profile, look to Washington cabs.  Not as easy to find, but producers like Delille, Abeja, Feather, Januik (single vineyard offerings), Soos Creek, Spring Valley, Woodward Canyon, L'ecole No 41, and others.

You get a touch more fruitiness in Washington cabs, bluer fruit than Napa (generally).

  4. had Elmer T Lee for the first time this past week.  I liked it quite a bit.

I also tried a 123 proof bourbon that is slipping my memory.  damn it, occupational hazard of being a big drinker I guess.

lol Holton was far from shit. If he didn't have off the field issues, he would have been drafted higher than Connor.

then he must have killed someone.

    My thoughts also.

I have a diabetic child.  I don't expect his college health center to meet those needs, we found him a local endocrinologist.  You know, someone that specializes in diabetic care.  Not the quack shack where you go to get a prescription for sinus medicine in allergy season.

Went to the Midnight in Paris wine tasting at Pappas Bros. Steakhouse in the Galleria on Friday.

The best wine of the evening was this Domaine A-F Gros.

When I was in Paris last Spring, I looked for A-F Gros wines, and could not find any of them.  This wine was absolutely stunning.

The next best wine of the night came from St. Emilion.

And then finally, we were hungry after all the wine, and decided to stay for dinner.  They had a bottle of Cotes du Luberon which was really quite tasty.

That Gros has Pinot on the label. Not sure I've ever seen that from a Cote D'Or bottling, although I admit to not drinking a ton of Burgundy.   Is that unusual or am I just dumb?

It doesn't follow the current trend of lower alcohol, "balanced", wines. The same folks hate modern Bordeaux and big Southern Rhones. They blame Robert Parker.

not in my case.  at least I might prefer a more nuanced wine at times, but I still have a place in my heart and palate for a big Napa red.

I just think you can get something that tastes just like Caymus for $40 instead of paying the Caymus price.   Their winery is in Rutherford, as are their vineyards, yet they don't designate their wines as from Rutherford.  why?  To be labeled Napa, wine could be from a large growing area and as much as 15% could be from non-Napa sources.   At current production volumes, I'd guess a lot of Lake County fruit in this bottling.

Just not what I like about wine.  But that's what makes wine so great, lots of different options for us each to get what we like.  If you want to buy Caymus, then God's Speed!

I'm pretty sure that's all on the regular Blanton's Single Barrel as well. All Blanton's bottles are from warehouse H.

You'll know the straight from the barrel because it will be 35+ proof stronger.

what's 35+ proof stronger mean?  stronger than what?  This one was 93 proof

It’s me- I accidentally wore this to blacks in Lockhart to pick up a to go order with my 3 year old. They reacted very poorly, and either an employee or customer called me a “fucking faggot”. I posted the story to Hornfans, feelings were hurt, life lessons were learned, protests were planned, lulz were had, etc.

By the way, for those who remember that thread: you are old. That was 12 years ago. When we moved here from shaggyEskimo I thought I had lost it, except Judge saved this lightly edited version and returned it to me. Thanks Judge!

    I remember that thread.

shit I'm old and damn I've wasted a lot of time

Sounds like the Blanton's Straight From the Barrel SFTB

yeah, just started googling and that's what I think it was.  it was very new, date was in December '17

  12. Need some Blanton's education.  Had some shared with me last weekend.  It had a label saying what date it was taken from Barrel No. xxxx from Warehouse "H" on Rick No.   blah, blah , blah

so is this some special deal or regular Blanton's?   It was really tasty, a touch heavier than other bourbons I've liked, but a nice flavor.

Headed back to Napa tomorrow for our annual trek. Our wine club memberships are getting out of hand. Anyone tried/belong to Aonair?  Hands down my favorite. Grant knows how to make wine (and beer)

    Current Clubs:

    Aonair

    Haber

    Amizetta

    Gargiulo

    Bremer

    Trespass

    Sabina

    V Madrone

yeah, I like me some Howell Mountain.

Other than Bremer, none of those are familiar to me, so kudos to you.  love supporting the smaller production places.

It's not just a short handle, FWIW.  It's a collapsible canvas bag that holds a shipper box, has an adjustable strap/handle, and wheels for pulling through the airport.

Do whatever you want, but it's not an outrageous price for what you're wanting.  Plus they deliver free to Napa and Sonoma, and as Smax says, a number of wineries even sell it on site at their tasting rooms.

One of the guys that created it is Todd French, who started the wineberserkers.com forum.

I didn't mean to sound rude, I saw the product online.  I'm sure it works well.  Not sure it is exactly what I want is all
