Is it terrible that a part of me hopes his encouragement works just so we can get the inevitable unpleasantness started?
A little bit but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t at least occasionally feeling the same.

@sidis - your examples of well constructed models are fine, but they aren't the subject of the discussion. They aren't being used to justify political goals. They aren't within the scope of the quote that I was responding to.
Cornyn was raising a point about the use of models to achieve political ends. He talked about public health, economic and climate predictions.
Public health models (covid19 models) are still evolving and we don't have good data. There are numerous threads here where folks are discussing various models and their strengths and weaknesses. I don't think they are mature enough to claim "science!" and shut down all discussion on their validity or the use of their predictions in justifying political policy.
Economic models?
https://www.ntanet.org/NTJ/41/4/ntj-v41n04p483-501-accuracy-government-forecasts-budget.pdf
Climate predictions? I get that the quote was pulled from an article trying to rally troops on the AGW issue, but as I mentioned earlier, even on less politically sensitive matters like hurricane forecasting, you can pick a model that gives the answer you want (or is useful for your political argument).
I've been plenty critical of "Al Qaeda" Cornyn for a long time. Feels dirty having to argue a point he raised, but I think a lot of you peeps are jumping at the bit to criticize without really understanding what he was saying because you don't like him. OU sucks.
You know goddamned well that John fucking Cornyn isn't interest in a good faith intellectual discussion about the accuracy of various models of the coronavirus pandemic. He's interested in further delegitimizing experts in the minds of American voters. Now I know you're a fucking born contrarian and questioning experts is your favorite hobby, but you're smart enough to see the results of the GOP's efforts to deligitimize experts because they're happening right goddamn now and thousands of Americans are dying as a result. Cornyn isn't interested in improving modeling of epidemics, he's interested in further dumbing down America so his party can retain power and continue the most rampant campaign of corruption that we've ever experienced.

Thousands of Americans are dying, in part due to his downplaying of this pandemic, and he's campaigning as always. What an amazing piece of shit.
Encouraging violent rebellion in states with Democratic governors isn't campaigning.

Well, it's exactly what fucking loser psychopaths do.
Are there third parties who we have little to no influence over? Let's make the entire discussion about blaming THEM! Is there our own government, that we could hold accountable RIGHT NOW, and that could make a real and ongoing difference? WHO CARES! LET"S MAKE SURE WE TALK ABOUT CHINA INSTEAD!!!
Fucking. Morons.
The fire is fucking raging, right now. In real-time, I don't give a flying fuck who the arsonist is who started it. I care about how we're going to fight the fire to keep it from destroying our country and taking tens of thousands of lives -- let's talk about firefighting, because that's actually what needs to be happening right now. These fucks want to draw all attention away from chief of the fire department and make sure we talk about who the arsonist might be. Fucking. Morons. Who will help wreck our economy and get people killed.
We have models to follow. We should follow them. And we won't. Because fucking. Morons.
The funny thing is that we should have a ton of influence over the WHO, but Trump has chosen to completely neglect our role in international organizations, ceding that control to others (in the WHO’s case, China). China doesn’t effectively control the WHO because they’re nefarious and secretly took it over, they effectively control the WHO because Trump gave them the fucking reins.

I’m 50 pages behind and not going to read all that to catch up. I assume people are eating their words about Trump’s leadership abilities? This thing could have really spiraled had he not taken such quick action. I get it, people died. But not the millions that would be dead had Obama/Biden been handling things. It’s nice to have Christian leadership in times like these.
Welp, see you in another 50 pages.
You might’ve missed the part where we all planned to round up the internet trolls and stick them in gibbets.

Re: saving lives vs the economy.
The numbers in a lot of states, including Texas, do not justify the widespread restrictions that are still in place imo. They were justified initially, but now with weather warming and it being clear that estimates overshot the mark pretty badly, it’s time to open things up. Whether it’s a process or not, it needs to happen.
Open non essential businesses. Encourage continued mask wearing and social distancing in public. Probably keep schools closed. If outbreak flares up immediately then have to walk things back, but it’s unlikely.
Over the summer, do as much work as possible on antibody testing, corona testing, ppe production. Investigate all therapeutic possibilities.
Where the rubber will meet the road is when cases start popping back up in the fall. How will we handle shutting things back down if the numbers are high? Hopefully it will be more nuanced when we have more data. And honestly it will need to be. After how far off the big models have been, a lot of people will be questioning any warnings the next time around. And rightly so, if you think about it.
Gonna be a tougher sell. Hope we’re better prepared.
How does anybody this stupid function day to day? Seriously, this shit isn't complicated. Children can understand communicable diseases. If you can't even grasp a basic understanding of why this shit is so stupid, I'm amazed that you've managed to not accidentally kill yourself while like, mowing the lawn.

Every goddamned Republican or Republican-sympathetic individual in America at this point is a perfect example of the Dunning-Kruger effect. Every single one. There isn't one goddamned person considering voting Republican who has even the minimal amount of humility required to think "hey maybe there's something here I don't understand as well as the subject matter experts." It's fucking incredible.

The Republican party repeatedly expressing the need to make human sacrifices to appease The Economy is some truly dark shit. What fucking year is it?

Who would've become President if Trump had been impeached and removed? Who will become President if Trump loses in November?

I'm pretty sure legislation still has to be signed by the governor to become law if so required by the state.
Eight days ago I bet you were pretty sure that John Roberts wouldn't invent a postmark date requirement out of thin air in order to punish black voters with death by covid, but it happened the next day. Every one of your posts is Charlie Brown sure that this time Lucy will let you kick the football.

Maybe, maybe not. The Constitution specifically says that the electors are appointed in the manner as the legislature of each state may direct. No mention of vetos, overrides, etc. If it is left to the courts to decide, any guess how SCOTUS will go?
Please tell me this is rhetorical.

I think that those are state regulations, not federal ones. Not sure what difference that makes.
Well if they're state regulations and you want the federal government to cut through that red tape, so to speak, you're asking for a more powerful federal government. Or are you simply opposed to licensing requirements for doctors?

People: There are no libertarians during a pandemic! They bring absolutely zero to the political dialogue.
Government: After watching the FDA and CDC shit the bed, we are going to slash all these regulations that unnecessarily slow innovation and development of testing in the private sector. Also, these regulations that prevent inter-state recognition of licensing for healthcare professionals are hurting our healthcare response. Also, home delivery and take out of alcohol, totally common sense of course.
Libertarians:
What federal regulations prevent interstate recognition of licensing for health care professionals?

Wisconsin plus a severely damaged postal service is their vote suppression model. They want us to die, not to kill them.

The GOP is a death cult, part infinity.
These people are not ever going to give up power peacefully. The black man getting elected broke them and their only desire now is the destruction of a multicultural America by any means necessary.

Seriously this is true. This is the fulfillment of Ayn Rand’s vision of the “ideal man.” It’s like when she wrote about William Hickman, that he had "no regard whatsoever for all that society holds sacred, and with a consciousness all his own. He has the true, innate psychology of a Superman. He can never realize and feel 'other people.'"
Bozo knows but for those who don't, William Hickman kidnapped, held for ransom, murdered, and dismembered a 12 year old girl. Ayn Rand idolized him for it. That's the modern GOP in a nutshell.

Okay, so I screwed up a decimal point somewhere in my math and fouled up my entire point. So I will use a different analogy and instead of playing Rene Descartes I will instead play David Attenborough to make my point.
Every year millions and millions of wildebeests migrate across Africa following the rains in search of fresh grass to graze on. Each year thousands and thousands of these wildebeests meet their end along this migration via lions, crocodiles, and other predators. The majority of the eaten are old or sick wildebeest. The wildebeest that finish the migration are rewarded with fresh grass to eat and the herd as a whole is strengthened. Now the wildebeest could just stay where they are at at the start and avoid all the lions and crocodiles that are waiting ahead of them. However they know that there is no grass to eat where they are at and they will all eventually starve (and the old and the sick will be the first to starve).
We are the wildebeest. Coronavirus is the lions and crocodiles and the grass is the economy. Fresh grass is an open, thriving economy. Dead grass is the economy in its current state. We can stay in the dead grass and keep the old and sick from being eaten by the crocodiles and lions. However the entire herd is eventually going to metaphorically starve by doing so (starving being a metaphor for poverty). And the old and the sick will be among the first to fall down this mineshaft of poverty our present actions are putting us on a course for. We are trying to save the old and the sick by starving the entire herd which will result in the old and the sick being among the first to die anyway. This completely defies logic.
If we as a society really fully bought in to your nazi "useless eater" rhetoric and decided we should kill the weak so that the rest of us could thrive, you'd be among the first ones to die.

He and Josh Hawley are probably the two most dangerous Republicans not named Donald Trump. We need to send his ass packing this election before he gains more power within the party.
