  1. Sounds like Boston got some decent weather for this October date. When I ran in 2015, it was rainy with a gusty headwind, pushed me back 6 minutes above my goal time. Met Frank Shorter in the hotel elevator after. That was cool.
I've run 13 marathons, including Chicago and Berlin, with a PR of 3:52 back in 2013 at Flying Pig (by far my favorite marathon, I've done it twice)

That said, when I had my PR I was in decent shape, and to qualify for Boston I would need a 3:15. I can't even begin to imagine how some people are that freaking fast and have no idea how they even train to get that way.

  2. Wife and I are flying down to Louisiana next Saturday because my grandmother is turning 90 in Hammond.  We're going to stay over in the French Quarter on Saturday night before we spend a few days with them.   We went in fall 2019 and had a great time and stayed in Treme, but this time we'll be much closer to everything.  One thing we definitely want to do is check out a jazz club, so any recommendations would definitely be appreciated.

Also interested in any recommendations on where to eat.  We already did the coffee/beignets thing at CDM, hurricanes at Pat O'Brien's and all that stuff.  Would really like to find someplace really nice, maybe as a surprise.

    Thanks!

  3. Finally beat Meg on a run involving Doom on both attack and special.
Made it several rooms past Meg before dying. Progress though!
I remember when I used to struggle through those areas, and now sometimes I can get through the first two without taking much damage at all. It gets much easier once you max out the mirror and you start to figure out which boons help you melt enemies.

You won't believe how much content and story there is to this game, it's incredible

It released on all the other consoles this past week, and it's on Gamepass for Xbox.

I started it for the first time on a Series X and it's been a lot of fun.

I finally beat it for the first time last Saturday after about run 67 or so, I think it was just a mental hurdle since I beat him again right after with a different weapon.   I went back to try to beat him with the sword, kept dying, finally did it last night then beat him with the bow.  This game is incredible, worth way more than the 20 bucks I spent on it.  I don't think I've heard any dialogue repeated and I've put in a ton of hours.  The music is really good too.

  5. I started playing this again after leaving it for a while to play BOTW, and just came back to it.   Currently playing on Switch but this game is just really good.  It can be a little frustrating but there's always something keeping you coming back.  Tell me your best weapon/boon combos and strategies.  I'm on run 50 and have gotten to Hades a few times but haven't beaten him yet.

  6. I lurk on these boards all the time thanks to some great threads you all have here, but thought I'd chime into this one too.   I played about 5 times a week over a decade ago, then got into running, did lots of marathons etc, then found out in 2019 by accident that there was a local tennis league and decided to check it out just for Ss&Gs.  Fast forward two years later and now I'm VP of said league, which has definitely come with some challenges but has been a rewarding experience.

Not sure how popular this format is, and 2019 was the first time I had heard about it, but we play Quads.  So on Thursday nights there are 10 quads, each person plays with the other 3 people in their Quad, and the person with the most games won goes up a Quad, the person with the least goes down, and the other two stay.  We start in April, play till end of June, take a break during July, then part 2 starts at the beginning of August until end of October.

Last year I started around Quad 6, made it to 3 once, went down immediately and finished around Quad 5.  This year I started on Quad 5, would have been elated to finish around 3 or 2 consistently, but actually punched way above my weight and finished on Quad 1.  I'm determined to stay there when we start back in August, so I've been playing a ton and taking some private lessons with a club pro.

On the administrative side, as VP there's a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes.  We have to keep a pretty steady rotation of subs, and if a member gets injured or moves, I and the other officers have to try to scramble to fill that spot. The husband of one of our members also put together this incredible spreadsheet, so all I have to do is enter scores, hit a button, and the spreadsheet calculates games won and outputs standings for the next week, with players moved up or down accordingly.  On top of that we have a season-ending banquet where we do some fun awards, maybe some giveaways, etc.  It's definitely been stressful but I'm surprised at how addicted I got to the Quad format.  I'm going to fight like a caged animal when I play on Quad 1 next week just to prove that I belong there.

  7. Just finished BOTW today and the DLC. Might be in my top 5 games of all time, at first I was kinda meh but I realized midway through that it was a masterpiece. What should I play next?

  8. Agreed on BA and would like to move there for a few months once they open up again. I enjoyed Miraflores and Barranco in Lima, but it's a bit rough outside of those neighborhoods. I went there mostly as a base for visiting Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Chile is amazingly beautiful. I went to Patagonia a couple years ago and it blew my mind. Santiago has some cool neighborhoods but is mostly boring compared to a dynamic place like BA. It's a good base for seeing the rest of the country but not a place to linger. Valparaiso is very cool with beautiful old houses. Ecuador has beautiful landscapes worth seeing. I stayed in Cuenca and really enjoyed the colonial architecture. Lots of expats.

Santiago was nice, the highlight of that part of the trip was seeing the glacier/reservoir by Cajon del Maipo. We loved the southern part of Chile, Puerto Varas but didn't make it further south to Patagonia.

I think since BA was on the tail end of our trip, it wasn't as impactful, especially after being in Bariloche, BA just reminded me of New York City where you get lost in tall buildings.

Would love to visit Cuenca, my friend from Ecuador told me it's hugely popular now for retirees from the US and other places.

  9. I'm not sure if you thought I implied that.  One of my good friends married a gal from Colombia, and her cooking was amazing.  And yes, often quite different than what even a legit Mexican restaurant will serve.
Lots of people have the misconception that all Latin American food is spicy but I don't think any type of food in South America is known for being spicy. I'm lucky, I live just outside of Charlotte and there are two really good Colombian restaurants within about 15 minutes.

  10. I wouldn’t have guessed there is a large Colombian population in Charlotte. Colombian food is some good stuff too.

Have you had a chance yet to travel to any of those countries?
Went to Chile and Argentina in 2017 and loved them both. We enjoyed the southern parts of both countries moreso than Santiago and Buenos Aires.

I fell in love with Colombia after a week. People were amazing and the country just has a lot of energy to it. I went with an immersion group through this program I'm in and I really hope they do another one this year. I went in February last year before the bottom fell out

  11. Checking in from close to Charlotte. Not Latino but for some reason I'm obsessed with Spanish and my Latino friends tell me I'm basically a Latino in a gringo body.

Took a year of Spanish in college about twenty years ago and never followed up with it, and it was always kind of a regret of mine, so in 2017 when I found myself working around a ton of people from Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico and Panama among others it rekindled my interest and I haven't stopped since.

In Charlotte, there's a huge Colombian population and at the end of July there's a huge Colombian festival. Grupo Niche played two years ago, I can't wait to go again.

As far as food, I love pretty much any kind of Latinoanerican food but give me some arepas con choclo por a bandeja paisa from Colombia and I can die happy.

  12. I watched his Colombia and Buenos Aires episodes a few years ago. He really kind of opened himself up during the Buenos Aires episode where it was also mentioned that there were a ton of psychotherapists in that same city. I remembered wondering to myself if he had problems with depression back then. I hate that he's gone, he had undoubtedly the best job in the world.

  13. After a year of not racing due to Covid and my weight getting out of hand, I'm determined to run more miles this year.  My wife and I just signed up for my friend's half marathon in Lincoln, NE in October, and I just signed up for a trail half marathon May 1st.  Just ran my longest run of the year this morning, 8.5 miles.  I'm looking forward to running being fun again and feeling like I'm just flying around instead of struggling through every mile.

Any recommendations on good trail shoes?  I have a pair of Solomons that's a few years old and I need something with some more cushioning.  Leaning towards Hoka, Brooks Cascadia, or maybe Altras.

  14. My wife and I are flying out from NC in October to run a friend's half marathon in Lincoln. He says that Lincoln is a nice college town but there's more to do in Omaha. I've never been to Nebraska but was wondering if anyone had recommendations on which city would be best to stay in, what to do etc. Thanks.

  15. almost finished with my first rewatch since 2013...got thru Ozmandias last night and holy shit i had forgotten the emotional wallup that episode had!
i had also forgotten specifically what he did to Jesse that episode...i guess i had blocked out just how much of a monster Walt became. i remembered what happened to Hank and Gomez but it still really hit hard.
the final few episodes are some of the darkest tv ever.
this show really stands up well over time.
I remember watching this live and the agonizing week long wait between the end of Tojalilee(spelling) and Ozymandias and everyone breaking down the shootout like the Zapruder film trying to figure out who was most likely to die.

my goal is to hit every country and therefore I rarely want/like to go to the same place twice. A country twice just takes away an opportunity to knock another one off. I am gladly going back to Colombia. It should be on your list. Flights are extremely cheap. Beer is a dollar or less. The only thing thats mediocre is the food.

Mentiras.  I could crush a bandeja paisa right now, plus you have sancocho, ajiaco, fruit you can't get anywhere else, fresh avocado, arepas con choclo, buñuelos, chocolate con queso.  You must have gone to the wrong places.

We loved Argentina and Chile (Santiago is a great city, just a little too much traffic and pollution) but Colombia was the one place I can say I´ve been in my life that felt like home.  I would live there in a heartbeat.

  17. Alright, heading to Colombia for my second time on Saturday for an undecided amount of time. First time was three weeks and I did Medellin, Cartagena, Baranquilla, Palomino and Tayrona NP.
Any recommendations on areas to do other than these. I am also working so anything without wifi will have to be weekend trips. Anybody done the amazon? Recs? Also sounds like Salento is a good spot?
I heard the Eje Cafetero is a cool place to visit with the tall palm trees. Try to play some tejo if you get a chance. Maybe Caño Cristales to see the River of Seven Colors.

Take lots of pictures and post here. Super jealous

  18. Does anyone know if Spain is allowing visitors? A friend of mine booked travel for this August, not sure what he was thinking.

Two friends of mine are in Mexico right now, they both rented AirBnbs in different places. Really trying to fight the temptation to go and do the same
