Yes. I still perk up when I here to sirens being tested. You would know something is wrong and immediately take steps to find out.

@Hagbard Celine has added much to this thread about flood planes and historic memory. Just looking where the Mystic cabins were is sickening. The land tells you that floods happen here. Nobody should be sleeping on the banks of the river. Sure, have activities there in the daytime, but everybody to high ground at night.

I'm usually not terribly affected by tragedy like this. Kids getting shot to death in class has made me sort of emotionally callous although I still care.

I can't stop imagining all those little girls loving camp and happy suddenly awakening to a torrent that sweeps them away for a horrible final few moments of life.

We really do need to ship our government officials to N. Korea so Kim can get some target practice with his anti aircraft guns.

But, we know how it goes in Trump's America.

1000% of this, esp the bold bit.

Yea. I didn't know about those, but I was wondering about what real time info authorities get on rising water. Relying on flash flood watches or warnings that go out whenever there's a storm is kind of like relying on the boy who cries wolf. Flash floods for most of us are impassable roads not unstoppable torrents hundreds of feet wide killing everything in its path.

If an event like this could have been predicted at all, why not air raid sirens?

No phones needed. No registration. Just a direct, audible warning to everyone along the river. Add flashing lights for the deaf. Sometimes the old ways are the best ways.

I wish Sam Houston or Lyndon Johnson were around to cuff these phonies around the room until they cried. Then run out of town on the ends of pitchforks. Then airlifted to an active volcano for a last trolley ride to hell.

All places are special. The way that Texas was special is pretty much all gone. Phonies in cowboy hats and boots appealing to the phonies in cowboy boots and hats that fill the state. I've never owned cowboy boots. I wear a cowboy hat when I'm going to be in the sun for an extended period of time. I'd like to cuff these phonies around the room until they cry.

    Who is with me?

Cosigned. So sick of all the fake bullshit wannabe cowboy posers. Where do we start?

    SIAP... Holy shit.

Fucking hell. From almost nothing to above the roadway in less than 40 minutes, on a bridge that looks 30-40' high.

I told my wife earlier that -esp with this being July 4th weekend - there were probably a whole lot of campers missing that aren't even being counted yet as 'missing', so I don't think they even have a good idea yet how many are actually missing. Then we saw a video at an RV park where there had been 28 RVs parked. They all got washed away. Unknown how many people made it out. Many of them - sometimes whole families - got washed downstream even with people trying their best to rescue them. And that's at an RV park. Now think of all the people who just roll up in their car  and pitch a tent.

I'm sure we haven't even come close to learning the true extent of this horrific disaster.

The people complaining about this being politicized are legitimately stupid.

Try to understand this: the funding for disaster response in this country was recently slashed, for political reasons, and now we have a major disaster.  No one is adding politics to the discussion.  You want to remove politics from the discussion, and you can't, because politics is an integral part of the whole sad story.

    100%.

And, I'm just curious ... was the Jim Spencer post moved here from the DT thread or was it actually posted here after the 'sanitation crew' wrecked shit?

If it was moved ... well ... why in the actual fuck?

    Welp ... there ya go.

I'm having trouble finding this. Anyone have a link for me to post on a very nitpicky board I post on?

Never mind. I found it on his FB page.

Same NWS that recently suffered big cuts to personnel and resources?

Firemen in some sketchy places have reported being shot at, or so I’ve read now & then over the years. A few folks hate any type of uniform it seems.
Before East Austin was so gentrified, my nephew was a fireman/emt at Station #1, which did a lot of responding east of I-35.
He said the longtime residents in that area loved the first responders and viewed them as an essential part of their community life.
His station received a lot of great home-cooked meals & baked goods from their grateful admirers.

    Carry on.

Yep, and there have been two little-publicized incidents in the last , idk, 10 years that I know of where AFD crews were assaulted upon arrival. One in NE Austin where a crew was attacked by a man in the front yard of a residence after being called there for an emergency, resulting in serious injuries to at least one FF. Another was downtown, where some homeless folks had been squatting in an abandoned building and starting fires inside the building for cooking and/or for heat. Can't remember what season it was when this happened. Crew was assaulted trying to extinguish one of those fires.

Most of my exposure to him is through F1 the game as I don’t usually see him on race broadcasts. What is it that everyone dislikes about him so much?

He's a douchebag with an affected announcing style and agonizingly slow cadence for effect. On DTS he's the leader of the false narratives that show thrives on, always villainizing one driver or making a hero of another, using imagined conflicts or other fabricated events as the fuel for the narrative. DTS is mostly fiction with a pretty F1 backdrop.

Going to see it tomorrow.  I am a big Formula 1 racing fan, so I am excite.

Same problem I have with DtS but I'm sure I'll manage. :)

Dude is just the worst, and a pos on top of that.

  13. As usual, Fernando knows exactly what's happening out there. The tactical awareness is off the charts ...

    Quote

“I never wanted to pass Liam at any point,” Alonso said. “I did a race as if it were a time trial on a bicycle. I just had to stay tucked in behind, take advantage of the three DRS straights, and then in the four corners in between push like it was qualifying to get back into the DRS.

“I think I was about half a second behind Lawson and by staying close to him I was gaining half a second per lap.

“In fact, they asked me: ‘When do we stop?’ and I replied: ‘When he stops!’ because I didn’t have that kind of pace.“I was basically an extension of Lawson and thanks to that, I finished in the points. We didn’t have the pace or strength to go ahead and overtake him.”

... and we all saw what happened as soon as he lost DRS with Lawson.

That was some fun racing.  I have a feeling Bortoleto woulda had him if they hadn't had to maneuver around Lando and Oscar at just the wrong time.

Probably. Alonso's tires were absolutely gone. A lot of people are saying that was one of Alonso's best drives ...  ever.

Agree on Bernie,  wish she would have gotten some of that air time Karun filled with his rambling nonsense.

Yeah, one Bernie is worth about eleventy-bazillion Karuns. And once Martin is gone, Bernie should be on every single pit walk, with Ted, Naomi, or Simon, etc. I said a long time ago that the best grid walk would be Bernie & Ted. That went pretty well yesterday.
