  1. Spencer had arm problems at Indiana State. It's part of the reason he wasn't drafted. I don't think our arm injuries are any more frequent than most other programs. We just focus on us so it seems like it. When you carry 20 pitchers on a roster odds are a guy or two will go down every year unfortunately. Just the way it is in the sport. It just always seems to be an important guy for us (Witt, Mercer, Spencer, etc.) instead of the middle reliever who was only set to get 20 innings.
  2. I think it's interesting Gerry keeps saying we are quietly in a good spot for Damari Simeon with his announcement on Friday and pretty much every other 9.95 site is barely mentioning him.
  3. Nahlin with a not great DB update Like always, with decision season comes twists and turns. Currently, defensive back recruiting is seeing the most shifts. After talking to as many people as we can possibly think of, here’s the latest we’re hearing. It’s not great. DB Chace Calicut: Georgia does lead at this point. Bulldogs are pitching cornerback while Texas is pitching safety with the ability to move around. There might be another smart angle Georgia is playing as well with a person of influence. Calicut announces June 27 so the clock is ticking. CB Samari Matthews: Our South Carolina site has growing optimism on the North Carolina cornerback. When Wiltfong and Simmons put in RPM’s for Texas I texted the group “I wanted to do the same but hadn’t heard anything new from his SCar visit.” I’m not liking what I’m hearing of late. That visit shook things up for sure. Matthews announces July 11. There is time but Shane Beamer, yes Shane Beamer, has reversed momentum. I wouldn’t put in a pick for South Carolina yet but I’m nowhere close to doing it for Texas. CB Davon Benjamin: Each miss Oregon has make them more focused on not losing Benjamin and they’ve had quite a few misses. I think Texas has recruited him better since the spring and he feels like it’s a great place to be developed but Oregon is being aggressive. Benjamin has no known decision date. This is a two team race between Texas and Oregon. We had years and years to get to learn how Terry Jospeh operates. Jospeh’s approach was patient, methodical, and unflinching. If he lost a recruit he just worked even harder to ultimately sign him. He never panicked to take low hanging fruit. More often than not, that approach worked out. Hopefully Mark Orphey can regain momentum in these recruitments, but if not, as Joseph routinely demonstrated, it ain’t over til it’s over.
  4. Harrison was a top 5 starting pitcher in SEC play in terms of ERA (3.51). Started all 10 conference weekends and allowed more than 3 earned runs just 1 time. His stuff may not be top-end but he was pretty much the definition of consistency. Him coming back to set the floor in the rotation would be a big deal.
  5. He was one of the few hitters who seemed to get better as the year went on. .984 OPS with 12 homers for a true sophomore is not too bad. Players are allowed to improve and my guess is at least 1 of these transfer hitters is going to struggle to adjust and we will need someone else to step up. Just the way it goes.
  6. Wiltfong just put in a prediction for Samari Matthews to Texas
  7. They are confident in getting Harrison back. No idea on Ruger.
  8. Don't know much about some of them but Rummel, Cozart, McKernan, Mitchell and Crossland are all on draft radars and would likely be day 1 contributors.
  9. Needs to throw harder than 86 and probably miss more bats (23 strikeouts in 40 innings against the midweek competition he was facing is not great) if he wants to factor into the conversation on the weekends.
  10. I’ve never heard of that theory but I’m assuming it has something to do with wanting your 9 hole to be able to set the table for the top of the order?
  11. I’m pretty meh on Becerra but I guess it’s better than rolling the dice on moving Rodriguez or Mendoza over to SS. Someone has to hit 9th in the order.
  12. No, was just late to the party in the earlier discussion about who the 4 silents might be and was surprised I didn't see his name mentioned yet.
  13. I thought Samari Matthews might be one of the hi's with the percentages Gerry had on him last week
  14. No. Pretty sure that money is already being allocated elsewhere and the amount it would require isn’t worth it.
  15. Whitcomb committed to Vandy yesterday
  16. 13 errors. Not great but doesn’t Stanford play on a dirt field? Usually see improved fielding on turf.
  17. His stats remind me a lot of Mendoza at ASU. Doesn’t walk or strikeout much. Good average with basically no power.
  18. FCB is saying Becker is staying at UVA. I think this will be our pivot option https://gostanford.com/sports/baseball/roster/player/temo-becerra I also think Gasparino will hit the portal soon.
  19. Roster check (excluding Galvan, Belyeu, Flores, Fien and Cunningham) *freshman C (2): Chamberlain, Courville INF (4): Mendoza, Borba, Livingston, Duplantier INF/OF (2): Freeman, Rodriguez OF (9): Gasparino, Winfield, Moroknek, Williams, Robbins, Peterson, Monsour*, Hill*, Pack* RHP (19): Riojas, Grubbs, Burns, Saunier, Moffett, Rerick, Flores, McCreery, Howard, Hamilton, Cozart*, Westphal*, Crossland*, Rummel*, Boles*, Walls*, Rogers*, Furgason*, Paris* LHP (9): Volantis, Harrison, Bing, Navarre, Walker, Dotson, Higgins, Mitchell*, McKernan* So 45 total with at least a catcher and SS coming from the portal, so call it 47. I’ll assume at least another few guys from the current roster leave and we lose 3-4 more draft eligible guys. That probably leaves us at around 40 heading into the fall.
  20. I think they only want to take 1-2 more arms so they will very picky. Very possible someone like Dotson could be stretched out as a starter with the stuff he has. If they get Grubbs, Harrison, Ruger and Saunier all back from the draft, this staff will be really damn good. All of sudden you are looking at a group that will go 8-10 deep with a lot of different looks (left, right, sidearm) + any freshmen who show they are ready to contribute early.
  21. 3 PM CT announcement for Vodney Cleveland tomorrow per Justin Wells
  22. Gerry Pretty sure Damari Simeon cancelled Ohio State OV this weekend. Texas vs Michigan decision coming … and the Horns had two great visits. https://247sports.com/player/damari-simeon-46150555/
  23. We aren't even a year removed from having every DT who officially visited commit elsewhere at our biggest position of need in the cycle, so I won't take for granted that there is a good chance we have 3 really good out-of-state DTs committed by the end of the day tomorrow. LB, TE and RB are the biggest question marks for me right now. LB in particular is a position we need to hit on after only taking 2 last year (1 being a developmental take) and 1 the year prior. OL, CB and WR have solidly set floors right now with who is currently committed and will likely be fine with the remaining options on the board.
  24. Gerry’s optimism with Finley is interesting considering how other sites are making it seem like an extremely close race with Notre Dame.
  25. Too much can happen between now and February. He also is going to be doing very little baseball the next 7 months and I don’t think he’ll just walk over and immediately start without a ramp up period.
