Americans won't migrate for low wage jobs.  The unemployment rate is already very low.  Why would someone leave a job in their home town to pick fruit in another state temporarily?  Also, these jobs already pay more than minimum wage.  Americans simply do not want them and do not want to move to where they are.  These jobs attract migrants because they are migratory jobs.  Come during harvesting season, live in migrant style housing, leave when the harvest is done.  There is no way to make an American with a family quit a stable minimum wage job to go do that.

Again, that is what they are willing to pay. There are plenty of seasonal industries where the individuals travel for work. The caveat is that they usually pay well. Funny how that works. See oil rigs, crab boats etc. You declare defeat with zero evidence to back up your claims. Americans have shown they will temporarily relocate for work when the money is right. These farmers have never tried to figure out a rate that would attract American workers because

    1. They have never had to

    2. If their competitor doesn’t they are at an immediate disadvantage.

There are a ton of migrants who are willing to do work that no Americans want, especially with the unemployment rate being so low. Farmers are having to look to using sophisticated robot machinery to pick fruit because they can't get enough workers. The only people who are taking these jobs are non-US citizens.

how on earth would you know this?  These industries have never had to operate in an economy where they didn't have access to illegal labor.  They have never had the market decide a price for this service.  There would be a wage point that would attract workers, but they never have to explore that option when there is an endless supply of replacements streaming across the border.  You suppress wages and increase competition putting a comparable American worker at a disadvantage.  He has no job security or leverage to increase his or her wage, because they are instantly replaceable.

The truth is we have no idea what a real wage for these jobs in a true capitalistic market.  If good prices need to be increased to cover the price of labor needed to attract a work force, so be it.

We do stand behind our values. What we don’t do is cower in fear and pretend the past did not happen. We accept and learn from our history, good and bad, and strive to always do better. Fear does not control our actions, and acting on that fear does not advance the goal. To change the world.

You sir are a coward, and let the fears you rally against enjoy a resurrection simply by pretending they never existed

    Have some self respect.

That is standard operating procedure out here, along with speeding up when you throw on your blinker to pinch you getting over.  It's gotten to the point I won't use my blinker in traffic.  Don't want to let anyone know my intentions until it's too late.

This was SOP when I took drivers ed at Sears in Memorial city mall (Houston). Talk about throwing you to the wolves...pull out on I 10 bitch. Now!

  6. When you look the other way you do the same to the lower third of the American labor force/economic scale. You flood the sector with cheaper labor and force them to compete on an unequal playing field. There is no chance for upward mobility, all that is left is to vote for larger hand outs (or forced minimum wage hikes) to bridge the gap forever.  It’s forced servitude

Why we continue to favor one mother simply trying to provide for her family vs an American one in the exact same situation is mind bottling. Open borders has disastrous consequences for everyone not in the upper class who enjoy no threat of competition for jobs, housing, health care l or education no matter how many illegally invade.

Just so the recipe link is here at the new home and I don't have to venture back to Scat Palace to find this,

    https://www.homesicktexan.com/2007/01/essence-of-tex-mex.html

Don't forget the crackers and fried egg.

    Ingredients

    Ingredients for the gravy:

    • 1/4 cup lard or vegetable oil
    • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
    • 1 teaspoon powdered garlic
    • 2 teaspoon ground cumin
    • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 2 tablespoons
    • chili powder
    • 2 cups beef broth, chicken broth, or water

    Ingredients for the cheese enchiladas

    • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
    • 8 corn tortillas
    • 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese
    • 1 medium yellow onion, diced

    Instructions

    1. To make the gravy, heat the oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Stir in the flour and continue stirring for 3 to 4 minutes, or until it makes a light brown roux.

    2. Add the black pepper, salt, powdered garlic, ground cumin, dried oregano, and chili powder and continue to cook for 1 minute, constantly stirring and blending ingredients. Add broth or water, mixing and stirring until the sauce thickens. Turn heat to low and let sauce simmer for 15 minutes. Add water to adjust the thickness.

    3. To make the enchiladas, preheat the oven to 450° F and grease a large baking dish.

    4. Pour the oil in a small skillet, and heat the tortillas one at a time. Keep them wrapped in a cloth until all 8 are heated. Pour 1/2 cup of chili gravy in a baking pan.

    5. Take a tortilla, put 1/4 cup of cheese and 1 tablespoon of onion in the center and roll it. Place rolled tortilla in baking dish, seam side down. Continue with remaining tortillas.

    6. Take remaining chili gravy, and pour it over the rolled tortillas. Sprinkle remaining cheese and onions on top. Bake for 10 minutes or until sauce is bubbly and cheese is melted.

Projectors are loud? I used to have one of these lag bolted to the ceiling in my bonus room:

    +Sony1252.jpg

Loud as hell and I always wondered if it was going to fall off and kill someone. You haven’t experienced frustration until you’ve recalibrated a 3-gun CRT projector every time the seasons change. But in a dark room and dialed in it was 100” of glorious HD picture.

Another option for the input limited: I have a remote controlled HDMI switch in a spare bedroom where the TV is a professional grade display with a single HDMI input and the old receiver doesn’t have HDMI. I set it up with a Harmony remote and it handles all of the source a/v switching with no fuss.

Paradigms are the best sounding speakers I’ve heard but they ain’t cheap.

Yamaha and Denon receivers both been good to me. I have two sets of Mirage speakers and I like them a lot. They don’t make them any more though.

Question for the group: does anyone have one of the LG OLED’s? Supposed to be the best TV ever made. I’m about to have about a $2K credit at Amazon burning a hole in my pocket and haven’t taken the plunge on 4K yet.

Many have them because they are both a great deal and one of the best pictures. Go look at some and compare them to the high end LCDs from Sony. The LCD still handle black and gray nuance better. And avoid “black crush”. Both OLED and LCD have the absolute darkest blacks which make the experience. For the money the LG is the best thing running, only problem I’ve had is their software and homelink sound functions when trying to work with high end receivers. Takes some trial and error to get it to work right.

The other consideration is size. 65 inches is the limit of affordability at this time of OLED. You can get into the LCD 75,85 inch range for half the price of the same size OLED. Sony is releasing an 85 Bravia for under 5000 this year. Full HDR, DOLBY VISION compatible.

  9. For those in Austin A&B is a great resource.

For it ballers on a budget check out what ELAC and Andrew Jones are doing for rock bottom prices. They also have some cool wireless sub tech and enclosure-less in wall speakers. (Frys for demo)

I up graded to a full 4K pass through ATMOS system this year. Went with Marantz 7011 and Klipsch RP 280FA and matching rp450CA. Subs are dual rp 12s

added Tidal for the Hi Rez music and it’s a whole new experience from my previous denon/paradigm set up. Biggest surprise was how big of a difference dual subs does for room management.

I like going to Hopdoddy and Home Slice but both are overrated.

Went to Players before the closed and that was really, really overrated. Jester probably had better.

Agreed, but that Italian Sanwich is by far the best thing on the menu and outstanding in its own right (for an Italian).

Pizza has never been the same since the early years and the inevitable ingredient cost cutting.

I don't understand the Y Mas obsession on Surly/Shaggy.  I also think every food critic in this city overrates Olimaie.

It seems like most on this thread are basing an "overrated" assessment on  how crowded a place is, but you don't really know everyone's intent in eating there.  I go to Stile Switch because it is close to my house and open for dinner (unlike many better BBQ spots).  Maybe all the dudes eating at Ranch 616 know the food is meh but are just there for the eye candy.  Maybe the olds waiting in line at Chez Zee will overpay for so so brunch because they like the piano player and the magician.

    Great post.

Ex. I’m going to y mas for the regular dinner or breakfast tacos (RIP) and Serrano salsa. It’s quick and cheap and delivers a near perfect version of said dishes. Not many people celebrate their entire catalogue

Never cared for Mighty Fine, found them to be bland.

This, but as far as a thick burger goes I won’t eat a med or med well patty and like it anywhere. Their burger cooking machine is set to that setting for all of their burgers. If you ask for med-rare they will tell you it’s at least a 14 min wait for that, can’t change the machine setting. Hand cooked and med rare is a solid thick burger entry.

Won't be long before those guys are making 50k+. NCAA is fucked then. Hell, 35k isn't a bad thing now.

needs to be 100k before you see a big shift. That is shit money and the team isn’t paying for their room/board and meal plan. Add to that zero team ownership or control so your “development” might be in your hands - agent or you pay for private training or maybe you moonlight in a foreign league to double up.

35k is hard living compared to a full ride at Duke or Kentucky.

  14. Adding another reason why Austin needs to be lowering property taxes, not raising them.....because they love to set that money on fire for the fuck of it

ex.  the city temp fences off a football size area of our neighborhood park.  They go through the process to create an entire temporary irrigation system covering the entire area, then they seed the whole thing and water it for two months, keeping the space fenced in.  The seed has now grown and the ground cover was completely covering the area for the last three weeks since the fence has been removed.  Fast forward to this week where they have brought in multiple CATs to clear overgrown brush and trees from around the protected area.  They ran over and uprooted all of the seeded field to dust, ground cover gone. - Even Forrest fucking Gump could have figured out the proper order for these morons.

Fence, seed, massive irrigation system, watering daily for two weeks....complete success...only to two weeks later complete kill the entire thing

It is this type of idiotic execution that reinforces how irresponsible the city is with the money of others.  These morons should be matching dollar for dollar out of their own pockets for all of their waste
