  1. In the past 10 years of visiting The City, I've never felt unsafe walking the streets or taking BART/Muni, but Market Street is definitely more sketch than before so we're on higher alert walking up Powell to our hotel at night. The really sad part and most noticeable to me, are the number of closed businesses, and the ghost town that is the Westfield Mall. However, during my last trip in December, I was pleased to see that Union Square was packed with people during the evening, giving me hope that The City is on the rebound. By the way, love that new T Line from Chinatown to the Chase Center!

He owns Lone Star, supposedly spent $280K on kid’s lawyer. Enjoy half of 23, fucko.

My ex worked for Bob at Lone Star @ 30 years ago, and I've never heard anything bad about him. I didn't know if you had some specific run in with him other than his sorry ass son being a murderer.

Taking my kids over spring break. I haven’t been myself since I was a young kid. Any must-dos for a family, other than Disney?

Rent bikes in Santa Monica and ride the trail to Venice Beach and back. Upon return, eat lunch outside by the pier at Big Dean's Ocean Front Cafe. Great SoCal beach vibe. Have fun on your trip.

Who heard of this joint? Looks like it started in Austin, now inside the comedy club on the Main St side of the long-gone Fox.

Got one good rec, but he’s a big skatehead.

$21 for a burger and fries. I'll let a few more people try it before I decide to take the plunge. I does look good though.

  5. Arvada would be a good location to retire. My Texas Ex son and his wife have lived there for the past 2 years and love it. It's less expensive than Golden or Boulder, and basically halfway between Golden and downtown Denver. There are lots of parks and trails, and Olde Town Arvada is a really cool place for drinks and dinner. It has a couple of light-rail (RTD) stations with a short ride to downtown, and it's just north of I-70 making it an easy drive to the mountains for the weekend.

Precheck has been moved and works very smoothly these days.  I haven't waited more than 10-15 min in probably a couple of years.

DIA is a huge airport.  When compared to other huge airports, it holds up quite well.  Give me DIA over DFW or IAH any day.

I agree. No issues with DIA at all, and quite frankly, Pre Check is quicker there than at most airports. Not to mention the very convenient RTD train to downtown and beyond.

I'm heading to San Diego in late August with my wife and our 19 month old daughter. It's our first time there and we'll be staying in an Airbnb house a couple blocks from the beach, near the junction of Mission Beach and Pacific Beach. We liked the idea of Coronado Island, but they don't allow short term rentals there, so it would've had to be a hotel, which meant sharing a room with the kiddo (no bueno) or paying significantly higher rates for a suite. The Airbnb option in Pacific Beach suited us better.

We plan to visit the zoo and spend time at the beach. We would like to visit La Jolla and probably Coronado Island. We don't have any specific activities planned other than the zoo, but looking for recommendations.

I would also appreciate some kid friendly dining spots around that area if anyone knows of anything. Basically prefer outdoor seating with good food, price is no concern, casual or upscale, just don't want to be crashing a quiet date night spot.

Are Stone Brewing or Ballast Point Brewing worth visiting?

Rent a couple of beach cruisers (one with a child seat) and ride up and down the Ocean Front Walk between Pac Beach and Mission Beach, but go in the morning before the crowds. Great beach vibe and views along the route. The Mission Beach section is quieter, and the basketball court at the south end of Mission Beach is one of the places where Bill Walton played growing up. The Spot in La Jolla would be a child friendly restaurant, along with Baked Bear in PB for ice cream/cookies, while Old Town is a cool area with decent Mexican food. Oh, and the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla would be a nice place for a quick family activity while up in that area. Have a great vacation!

I grew up on Gattis and love it to this day. I took my wife to one 3 or 4 years ago and she thought it was CiCi's level. Surely she's wrong and my nostalgia is correct.

Unfortunately your wife was not wrong. I grew up on Gatti's and even worked at the one on 183/Balcones CC during summers while in school, and I can tell you the pizza is now of a very low quality. We have a new one near our home in Fort Worth and it's just not good at all. Years ago, they went to a different sauce, used grated smoky provolone instead of full slices of regular provolone, and started cooking them in conveyor ovens. Not nearly the same pizza.

There’s two people I know that order cheese enchiladas, my five year old and my 84 year old granny. Guess it panned out for you this time, hard to catch e-coli from pasteurized cheese and it sounds like the new joint is prime for it.

    Maybe that's why she's made it to 84. 😉

  10. My wife and I were really disappointed in the food at the remodeled Pulido's. They did a nice job fixing the place up, but the salsa was bland, too tomatoey, and had an aftertaste similar to cocktail sauce. She said the flautas were good, but my cheese enchiladas had little taste and the rice and beans had no flavor at all. I'll probably give them another try because its close, but other people have written the same and apparently they haven't/won't adjust.

Lots of great food in Denver. At all costs avoid BeauJo’s Pizza. It’s horrible from a regional chain that some locals love. Imagine an 8 pound doughy pizza covered in honey. No thanks.

FYI. You can have your pizza there made with thin crust, saving you about 7 of the 8 pounds. Plus, the honey is for the left-over crust. The pizza is decent, but the atmosphere, especially the one in Idaho Springs is fun.

  12. This may have been posted already, but the British studio and play by play chicks are making my ears bleed. Thank goodness the football has been great though.

My wife and I want to visit the Bay Area 6/29 - 7/7.  Neither of us has spent any real time there.  We're looking for recommendations on hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, and places to see.  Some things on our list include:

    -- Alcatraz

    -- San Francisco proper

-- wine country (need advice on whether Napa or Sonoma might be better)

-- either Redwood or Sequoia National Park (need advice on which is "better")

    -- other?

San Francisco is my favorite city to visit and do so once every 2 years, usually to catch a Warriors game. We stay around the Union Square area and take Muni (bus, light rail) everywhere. The city appears to be as clean and safe as before, however, many restaurants/businesses have closed down or are open fewer hours. First timer activities should include taking a cable car trip to Pier 39 area, visiting Alcatraz (purchase tickets in advance), catching the museums in Golden Gate Park. As already mentioned, rent a bike at Pier 39, and ride to Sausalito via the Golden Gate Bridge for lunch before taking the ferry back to where you began.

Great and unique neighborhoods for drinks and food include Castro, Mission, Pacific Heights, and my two favorites, Chinatown and North Beach.  Great Chinese food at Hong Kong Clay Pot in Chinatown, and amazing Italian food in North Beach, including Golden Boy Pizza and Soto Mare for seafood. Plenty of hole in the wall bars all over town, and great food in every neighborhood. Grab a drink in the Tonga Room in the Fairmont, and a cocktail in the Top of the Mark across the street at the InterContinental for more of an upscale experience.

If you can't make it to Alcatraz, take a boat tour of the bay that will include getting you close to Alcatraz, and will take you under the Golden Gate Bridge for a unique view of that structure. Spend time around Pier 39 (Fisherman's Warf) too. It's touristy but a lot of sights to see, and its especially kid friendly. Catch a Giant's game at Oracle Park, but don't forget your cold weather gear if it's at night!

There's no denying San Francisco is not the same city it was 5 years ago, but I've never felt unsafe anywhere, including being on public transportation at night. However, avoid the Tenderloin area and mid-Market Street and you be fine. You will see homeless, but nothing that you won't see in any other major city, and I have yet to see shit on the street. Can't wait for my trip in October. Enjoy yours next month!

What a day for the far west side. the civilized world of FW pretty well disappears west of 183 (check the sex offender map between 377/183)… save good old como but seems like that’s actually up trend. That west camp Bowie retail strip desertion is really sad/gross.

Until further notice, Tarrant County Probation is not allowing officers to conduct visits along the Las Vegas Trail corridor. We're the only ones without guns.

Heading out to San Diego this summer for some baseball games.  Catching a Dodgers and Angels game, but we are staying in San Diego (also catching a Padres game).  I'll go back and read this whole thread when I have time, but looking for any recommendations. We are planning on the Zoo and maybe a half day or so at the beach.  What's the best beach to go to that has places to eat on the beach and other stuff to do?  Just an early look was thinking Mission Beach.  Was planning on hitting up Bub's before the Padres game for drinks and bar food.

Having spent a few days there two years ago, I felt there were more places to eat/drink by the water in Pacific Beach than Mission Beach, but Mission Beach is very cool too. Recommend renting beach cruisers and ride the paved path between MB and PB. La Jolla is also really nice, but MB/PB have much more of the SoCal beach vibe in my opinion. We stayed downtown and really liked the Little Italy area best for dinner and drinks. Try False Idol, a really awesome tiki bar speakeasy off Beech and Kettner. Have fun on your trip!

  16. Finally made it to Ribbee's this morning at 1100 with no line at all. Place was clean and the staff were really friendly. I had the original ribs which were good, but my wife's beef ribs were obviously reheated which was disappointing. The French fries were over seasoned a little and the Cole Slaw was average. FYI, they charge a dollar for BBQ sauce, but there's enough for at least two orders or ribs. Overall, a good place to go. $20 a plate was reasonable as there was plenty of food, including a drink and roll.

Went there tonight after the movie and had a supreme burrito with barbacoa.  Wife ordered the three taco combo.  While the burrito was loaded, I found it rather bland, even after putting both red and green salsa on it.  The tacos she had looked like something from Joe T. Garcia-small and tasteless.  I am probably spoiled from working on the northside for 21 years and the bar was set pretty high by a number of places, but Papi's didn't impress.

I went this morning for the first time after all the hoopla here and thought their breakfast tacos were pretty good. Fresh flour tortillas, plenty of filling, but I felt all 3 salsas offered all were a little runny.
