Uno's wasn't bad.  Went there occasionally.

I'm very worried about downtown.  That's four restaurants that have closed and I'm hearing rumors about at least one more.

Jimmy Johns closed last week too. Sign on the door says temporarily, but you know how that goes.

That Irish place doesn’t have a shot in hell, especially considering it’s not part of the garage cartel. If an Effin taco place can’t make it during non covid and stirr shuttered along with the brewery just up the road, then this doesn’t sound promising. Wonder how long that Austin taco place by the former brewery is doing in all this.

(Watch this damn thing turn out to be a smash hit now)

    That, and a $19 breakfast.

Kind of a fucked up pic, our city had to remove all rims & volleyball nets because we don’t listen good.

I don't blame the city a bit. I ride my bike through there almost daily, and as recently as Sunday, that court was packed every time.

  4. Great arena and had a good time at the game! Funny moment during the trivia contest about the number of national championships the aggies have "claimed." Ha!! BTW, the upper level women's restrooms were amazing.

Okay, well what part of mid-town?  That's actually  a very large swath of the island.  You talking west side/clinton/hell's kitchen/even north part of garment district (where I sold rain coats for 45 years) or east towards the UN/even Murray Hill?  I stay in midtown most of the time so I can help guide you.  And yes, resort fees in Manhattan are bullshit since it's not like it's "a resort on an island" even though it technically is.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I lived in Connecticut a few years while growing up, so I have only made day trips into the city, and am by no means an expert in anything NYC. My wife and I are planning to visit in late March for the Knicks-Warriors game, so I was just assumed that staying in mid-town would be the most convenient. However, being budget conscience but not cheap, we would be open to staying in some other part of Manhattan that is fairly safe and very close to public transportation. It has been difficult to compare prices on Expedia due to the resort fees, so I was hoping that veteran Surly NYC visitors/residents could help me out with a list of places where the price per night + tax is the actual price. There are some Airbnb's that appear to be a good value, but staying in a hotel as a part of a package deal seems to be more reasonable.

Where in mid-town? I wouldn't say "Most" charge a resort fee.  Many do, but there's plenty of bland convention style business hotels that don't.  Are you just morally opposed to the extra $30/night?  Or would you take a $250/night place that included a resort fee over a $270/night property that had no resort fee?

Of course, but I would also rather find a $220 a night room without a resort fee than the $250 a night room that includes $30 a night resort fee. For others, don't worry, I am not destitute, just trying to get a good deal. Thank you to those who have made suggestions.

Well, I went back to BBQ on the Brazos on Friday. Arrived right at 11am, nothing has changed from my last visit, very avg bbq, brisket was dry and crumbled. Ribs did pull off the bone, but overcooked and had little flavor, even after he shaked some rub over them. Sausage could've came from ekrich farms.

On another note, the bbq set up I saw by hot box biscuit club last weekend, looks to be Brix Barbecue.

Brix BBQ is excellent, and their new location catty-corner from Hop Fusion will be convenient. Owner Trevor is a good dude too.

Need to find a nice spot for Saturday that we’ve never been to before. Got a babysitter from 3-9 so I can take the wife out for her birthday. Whereas I’m in the same camp as Spy, set me up at a dive like Corsets and I’m at home, the wife likes places like Little Red Wasp, Mash’d, Rodeo Goat, Gloria’s and so on. Patio is a plus, she likes that kind of shit. I only like it if it’s below 60 degrees, but it’s her day so I’ll suffer it.

And for the record if you say Woodshed I’ll stab you with a rusty spoon. Fuck Tim Love.

Good news! I just called The Pussy Whipped Bar and Grill in Clearfork, and booked you a table for two.........stud. Hook'em!

JK! Have a great dinner and enjoy the night out! Plenty of games left this season.

Next week the rail crossing on 7th street by Tom Thumb will be under repair June 25-27.  The road will be shut down at that point.  Not sure if it will be all day on the 25th and 27th but should be blocked all day the 26th.

Going to be a cluster fuck during rush hour.

    Thanks for the heads-up!

It's a tough trade-off in terms of getting there early, because while you'll get their mom there earlier for a good seat, it can be an extra couple of hours for her out in the evening heat.  If it's the two of you (or more), get there early to get seats (60-90 minutes prior to commencement), and then let your mom go inside one of the 6-pack buildings or nearby churches to stay cool/shaded.  And then bring her out as the ceremony begins.  There's really no strategy to where you sit, you won't be able to see your graduate in any way, shape, or form.  So just stick to shade, or an aisle seat for your mom's sake.  Most people enter from the west or southern ends.

If you donate $200 to UT in anything but athletics, I'll give you my parking pass which will enable you to literally park about 50 feet from the South Mall/6-pack.  No, it's not a handicapped tag.

Thanks for the great advice and taking the time to post this.

  11. My son is the one graduating, so I am looking for advice more in the area of where to park, when to get there, bet places to sit, etc. My 80 year old mom will be with me, so I am trying to do a little advanced planning. You know, insider tips from someone who has been through one before.

  12. My Longhorn graduate is starting a new job this summer in The Woodlands, and is thinking about living in Conroe as apartments appear to be a little less expensive. That of course means driving I-45 to and from work daily. What is the traffic like for that commute? Hook'em!
