Golden would meet your needs. You will run out of stuff to do in Golden proper after a day or 2 but downtown is walkable and there are several restaurants. The location is awesome. Easy fly into DIA, Red Rocks for concerts, tons of  hiking all through the area. Rafting is close by in Idaho Springs. Genesee Bison outlook is close. You can go for a scenic drive up Mount Evans. Boulder is 30-45 min away/Estes Park is a 4 hr drive. Colorado Springs is a little over an hour (Pikes Peak/Manitou Springs). Fly fishing is available in the area too.

    Second this. Golden is amazing!

IF I made it to Ft. Worth on Saturday.  Where would be my best BBQ bets? I am not standing in line at Goldees so that's out.  I'm thinking Panther City and Daynes.  Anywhere else you might suggest on that level?  Brix?  Thanks!

    1.a. Brix.

    1.b. Panther City.

These two places are .4 of a mile from each other. Panther City will likely have the longer line though.

I got a 1/2 lb cheeseburger at the original location. Maybe it was the cheese.

But your original point stands that $17 at M+O seems a little bit high for a burger, fries, and a drink. That price point seems more in line with Rodeo Goat, Hopdoddy, etc.

Craft burgers are all just playing catch up with the craft BBQ joints.

Did he say when he's opening? I haven't been in over a month, but the turd posted on Facebook a week or two ago that the opening of the brick and mortar Brix was imminent

He wouldn't commit to an opening date, but said they were getting close, and the fact they're about to start hiring, leads me to believe it will be sooner rather than later.

odd ball answer is try the VFW. But you would likely be Happy at StingRays on beach street as they are the "sports bar" in town.  Decent food and multiple screens if you want the sports bar vibe.  Blue Water Cowboy has a few screens, but my second choice might be Lelo's next to La Playa.  I'm sure they would put have the game on and solid drinks and food.

    Thank you!

I worked on the Northside for 21 years and only went there once, which was enough to convince me that El Asadero, Los Paisanos, El Rancho Grande (now the Original) were better authentic options and were less than a mile from my office.

Exactly. Not to mention Dos Molina's and all the other places further up 25th towards Azle Avenue.

What like Joe T’s? Ownership and management often have little to do with the actual food. Around these parts Koreans own most Chinese and sushi joints and Persians own a lot of Italian joints.

Anyway, Mercado Juarez has had a north side location for decades. The one in north Arlington as very good back in the late 80’s; you could get great cabrito and lots of south Texas things that you didn’t see much back then. The decline started over 20 years ago when the owner sold out to his store managers and they really lost their way. I haven’t been in over ten years. I’ll give the new guy a chance if he fixes the place and it gets good reviews.

Thanks for confirming the food is bad. I ate there only a few times back in the early 90's when I worked in the area, and thought the food was bland and lacked taste. I can only imagine how bad it is now if it has indeed declined over the past 20 years. I never made to the Arlington location so I have no idea about their food, so I will defer to you. I'm not a restaurant snob in any way, but in my experience, no Mexican food joint owned by non-Hispanics has ever really been good, just average at best. I may be wrong about that, but none come to mind.

I've always felt they have some of the worst Mexican food in Fort Worth, and after reading names of the owners, I now know why. IMO this place is for tourists, or people too scared to go the Northside to eat authentic stuff.

Was there over the weekend and there was tons of seaweed. Not sure if its part of the large blob that is expected over the course of the summer or not.

Thanks. Plus the weather looks horrible too. Going to be fun.

Here today for 24 hours for a speaking engagement tonight.  Lunch at Angler and low and behold, Pliny!

Hoping I don’t get pulled into conversation after my event so I can snag a cheap seat to the game   Why couldn’t it start at 7??

Love this town   It’s definitely grimier than pre-pandemic but just be safe and make good decisions.   8th and Neches is more foreboding

A cheap seat at the game? You do know it's game 2 of the NBA Western Conference Semi-Finals right? If you do happen to snag "cheap" seats, check out Chris Mullin doing the Warriors pre-game TV show in Thrive City outside Chase.

  11. My two cents. I was there a few months ago for the first time since the pandemic. I was all over the city, took public transportation everywhere, and never felt unsafe. Aside from the Tenderloin, and Civic Center and mid-Market, I saw very few homeless, and no one ever bothered us. Also, I personally did not see any pee or poop on the sidewalks. That said, there are a few weird characters walking around, but that's what makes The City unique. I was more shocked by the number of places that have closed or have limited business hours, so plan accordingly.

That would have been fun to see them offload!   Well the spotty weather evened up being pretty damn nice, with a one day interruption of very high winds.  Then the heavens bestowed a beautiful day at the beach on Sunday... always stay Sunday!  Front rolling through Friday night provided a hell of a light show.  But like my buddy said when we were debating coming down, 50% chance of rain, means 50% chance we will be sitting on the beach.

Did the usual Kody's and La Playa, but I sure do miss Giggity's.  Being able to stay late at the beach until long after dark and still get a good meal, along with some people watching (zoo observation) is something that cannot be replaced. Giggity's I still morn you.

The good news is Shorty's look like it will be pretty nice once it's put together. and will be a nice addition to the beach street "entertainment district."  Sunday was gorgeous as you can see. Water was super clear!  I drove up onto a group of folks sharing morning coffee on the beach and pointed out to the surf asking if they had seen the Porpoise in the Surf?  The whirled around and were just trilled to see the porpoise working along with the birds out past the breakers.  They were so excited it probably made their day.  And a beautiful day it was!portalastdayofApril2023.thumb.jpeg.e14c4adfb8d71007126da4ca7547ddc3.jpeg

I'm going next week. Any seaweed issues currently?

Got another jury summons today, but they didn’t hook me up with the sweet civil court assignment like last time during ‘Rona. Back to the cattle call room, I’m sure.

You might be exempt if you've been summoned in the past 2 years.

Trevor at Brix BBQ has a sammich he calls the Funkytown Hot Chicken that slams. He has recently started doing Funkytown Hot Chicken tacos and I need to waddle my ass over there to get some.

Any idea when his place on S. Main is opening up?

Jesus BBQ reopens March 7. They’ve been on hiatus since death of the founder. It’s a little cafe if you haven’t been there, great fried chicken and very good old timey Tex Mex and Texican home cooking.

    There is no bbq.

    Great plate of cheese enchiladas.

It's a dry brine.  I coat the steak in salt and let it brine at RT for 30-45 minutes.  I then rinse the salt off, dry with paper towels, and crack pepper on both sides.  It brings the moisture to the surface and makes a nice sear.  No additional salt needed.

What type of salt is best?
