Lol I'll never love anything as much as El Chingon.

Hey did I fall asleep or did no one mention the new place going into the Mont Plaza spot of death.

I don't remember the name, but there's a new sign. No need to remember the name, it'll be closed by Easter.

    Goat and Vine (Montgomery Plaza).

I still have a menu hanging up in my office.

Interesting that the Combo#1 ($5.70) is more expensive than the items sold separately (3.15+1.25+1.00=$5.40), if I'm reading the menu correctly. I know, I have way too much free time today!

I frequent this thread and eating steak is non-negotiable. But beef has gotten stupid expensive here.  Enter beef skirt, which is easily a third or less of the price I pay for ribeye.

A south Texan sees skirt and says “fajitas.” That is a brilliant life choice. I would never suggest to someone planning to make fajitas out of skirt to to NOT make fajitas.

But. You could also make a roasted garlic-chive butter. You could mash up some savory sweet potatoes. You could cut that skirt into steaks (skinny ends for the kids) and cook just up to medium rare on a hot grill. And it could be beefy and juicy and as good a bite of steak as you could want on a weekend night.

This is exactly what I've been doing lately! At our Central Market, skirt is about the same price as prime Top Sirloin per pound, but much more flavorful. Everything else is just too expensive. Once I get home, I marinate in olive oil, fresh lime juice, garlic, salt, pepper, Worcestershire, soy sauce and cilantro. Great tasting steak at a fraction of the price!

  4. I hit Hurtado two weeks ago. First of all, I'm no BBQ snob, and I love when places live up to the hype, but I have to say this place was very underwhelming. Wife and I showed up at 10:30 as previously suggested, but there was really no line, just a few people still ordering breakfast. We went ahead and paid anyway and waited for the magical 11:00am hour to get our food. We got brisket and ribs only, with a side of beans and mac and cheese. No sausage since they said it wasn't ready yet. Really? The lean brisket was too dry and way over peppery for me, while the ribs tasted like they were left over from the previous day. Beans had a lot of chili powder, think Railhead, but the mac and cheese was really good. Without prompting, my wife said she didn't think the brisket was up to par either. I know I should go back and give them another try, but with too many other close options such as dependable Brix and Panther, why take the chance. Hopefully your experience will be better as I know every restaurant has a bad day now and then.

Gusto's smash burger is legit. Get double meat and the tater tots.

Is Gusto's inside that new small hotel over there?

Its a food truck that sits in the alley behind the hotel that you can access via the patio. There's a very small waiting next to the truck, or you can wait on the patio or in the bar. After you order they tell you when to check back, or sometimes they just come find you.

Has anyone been to Gusto's at Hotel Dryce? Looks great, but they're not open for lunch.

WTF? Charged with injury to an elderly person? Seems like this should be a pretty open and shut case of homicide.

By definition it is a homicide, but he's yet to be charged. I assume it was going to be difficult to prove intent for murder, so I guess that's why FWPD sought a warrant for Injury to Elderly instead, since the victim was over the age of 65. However, this charge can be upgraded to a first degree felony under circumstances which I'm pretty sure were met. I did see he was charged with an Assault Bodily Injury-Family Member in 2012, but that case was dismissed.

Anybody got a locksmith rec?  We did a small renovation and we need two doors/deadbolts re-keyed.

Hi-Q Locksmith came out to our house (Arlington Heights) a couple of years ago when my wife locked her keys in the car. I felt they were prompt, and fair. 214-938-0368.

I don’t frequent the downtown scene much at all but from what I follow online it certainly has gotten worse over the years with the rough crowd and crime. They are trying to mitigate it recently so will have to see if it’ll work.

If you like weirdo and white trash people watching, this is ground zero! We go at least once every Vegas trip for the experience and are never disappointed. Additionally, Alter Ego is a local band that plays FSE and they are a lot of fun. Downtown is sketch, but I've never felt unsafe, however, if you're from a small town, you might be scared sh!tless.

Best refrieds in town: Juan in a Million.  So much so that if I order something that doesn't come with beans, I order an extra side of them.  Perfect porky tasty goodness.  Taste like I remember eating in my family's shitting mexican hometown.

    This.

  11. Wife and I were in the L.A. area for a wedding a few weeks ago and aside from the traffic, we had a great time. LAX is a mess too, but once we got our rental car, we headed to the Original Tommy's for a great burger experience. After that we ventured to UCLA to tour the campus and fell in love with Westwood. We stayed at an Airbnb in Santa Monica, had drinks at the quintessential SoCal beach bar, Big Dean's, and ate some amazing lobster enchiladas at Sol Agave. One night we went to West Hollywood for dinner and drinks at one of the Vanderpump places after spending part of the day at the Griffith Park Observatory. Overall, it was a good experience, and I could see myself living there someday if I could afford it.

  12. Was in L.A. last week and ate lunch at the Original Tommy's on Beverly Blvd./N. Rampart, just northwest of DTLA. 76 years in business and still cranking out great burgers and fries. No seats, just places to stand and watch traffic/people. Supposedly the place to go after Dodger games too.

What exactly is deferred adjudication. Is he just free since it’s deferred? No parole or probation officer? Does he wear a tracker?

As a parent I’d weigh my daughter’s wishes the most. Defense attorneys can get brutal in rape cases. I would have requested he can’t be within a mile of my daughter ever.

Deferred adjudication is a form of probation where the judge stops short of convicting the defendant and places that person on supervision. If the defendant completes the probation successfully, he has no conviction on his record for that particular offense, but if there are violation/s, the judge can adjudicate (convict), and then sentence the defendant to the maximum allowable (months/years) for that particular level of crime (i.e. 3rd degree Felony, Class A Misd., etc.). He will report to a probation officer in a unit that specializes in supervising sex offenders, but wearing a tracker (monitor) is up to the judge, and not an automatic condition of probation.

Headed to the area next week for the first time in 20 years, traveling with wife and a 13 year old. Staying at a house in Marfa (sucks, got it) for a week.  Planning on two full days in the park, hitting Boquillas, Rio Grande village, lost mine, balanced rock and Santa Elena. Dinner at Starlight, the Gage, and Reata in Alpine.  We have reservations for the observatory, and are planning to spend a day doing the Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad.

Other suggestions?  Thought about rafting, but looks like the river is low. Would Balmorhea pool be worth it in March (highs in the upper 70s).

Dining recommendations?  Looks like several of the Marfa restaurants recommended in this thread are closed. Shopping and galleries for the wife?

I haven't been myself, but I've heard great things about the Brick Vault Brewery in Marathon. It might be a cool place for a beer before or after dinner at Gage.
