  1. Legitimately one of the coolest live music stories I've ever heard. Maybe the coolest.  Definitely a story your whole family will be sharing for years on end.

That said, I am laughing at your daughter telling her friends that story.  "That's awesome!  What did the hat say?"  She looks down, shuffles her feet and sheepishly mutters, "a trucker hat with 'I love girls' on it".

  2. We are donors at The Paramount and they had an event on Wednesday.  They screened "20 Feet From Stardom", which I hadn't seen in a decade.  About backup singers throughout the decades.

It is so good and joyful.  A wonderful watch.

I've spent a fair amount of time in the studio with Britt and the Spoon crew.  I can confidently assert that Britt's knowledge of rock is "encyclopedic", to an insane degree.  If it was recorded and got any airplay, he knows it.  I think that's why you hear so many diverse influences in Spoon's music, from Prince to the Stones to the Kinks to the Replacements, the Clash, the Isley Brothers, you name it.

That makes total sense.  Their 25-30 years is very varied.  That said, they have Britt's voice and the just off-kilter sound dissonance and soundscape maximalism that is always unmistakably Spoon.

Can't remember if posted . . . don't care . . . you can really get the feeling Britt appreciates Westerberg's writing on the second tune here ("Alex Chilton"):

We didn't do much this year, except for Luck Reunion and bouncing around South Congress on Sat.  We caught English Teeth and were about to leave until they introduced Britt and we stayed for his songs.  I don't know much about The Replacements, but Alex Chilton definitely could have fit right in on Girls Can Tell.  Pretty obvious that Britt was influenced by them early on.  Thanks for posting.

Luck was a great time, once again.  I have been 6 (7?) times now.  Just love it.  My favorite set of the day was Texas Wild with Walker Lukens and The Texas Gentlemen.  It was all covers of Texas artists with special guests throughout.  From what I remember, but I am missing a few:

The Texas Gentlemen - That's Right (You're Not from Texas)

    Walker Lukens - "Cheap Sunglasses"

David Ramirez - "All my Exes Live in Texas"

Not sure who they were - "Say My Name"

Steve Earle - DIdn't know the song

    Rainbow Girls - "Goodbye Earl"

Sarah Jaffe - "Angel Flying too Close to the Ground"

Vaden Todd Lewis (Toadies) - "Since You've Been Gone"

Matthew Logan Vasquez (Delta Spirit) - "Pancho and Lefty"

It was just one of those transcendent live music sets that has everyone locked in and having a great time.  So joyful.  "Since You've Been Gone" brought the fucking house down.

The way Kiku screens herself from anjin so that it seems like Mariko is talking and how the tension builds from there was so well done.

Mariko couldn't even finish translating because she knew that was a one way train to fucktown.

Huge news for the 2 dozen people out there who care about women's basketball

Can you help me understand the psychology in coming to a thread you don't care about in order to make fun of people that are interested in a topic?  Does it help you feel superior in some way?  I am legitimately curious.

I always just assumed she was a deeply closeted lesbian.

My understanding is that it is an open secret that she is gay.  She lived with a woman in Waco for years, no idea if it's the same set up at LSU.

  7. The only thing that was bungled was the collective actions of millions of nosy gossip mongers who mistakenly thought they were entitled to know her whereabouts and all the goings-on that were none of their fucking business until she wanted it to be.
Yeah, she chose this life in the limelight but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve some time away without explaining it to the whole world.

The gossip mongers are out of control in the UK. I concede that but disagree with the rest.

The people of England are entitled to their business. This is not a private citizen. Their source of income is public funds and entire reason for being at this point is to be a public face. They 100% owe transparency to the public. I understand some time to work through it with doctors and your family, but you need to communicate with the public (who again, 100% pays for the largesse) ASAP. Hiding behind photoshops and fake photo ops is irresponsible to the people that pay for their lives.
  8. As someone who liked AC well enough and it was my first WA movie, I’m hearing I should watch Royal Tennebaums and Grand Budapest next?

I think that’s probably fair. I would throw Bottle Rocket in there because I love it so much, but he’s not really playing with the Wes Anderson style yet. It’s just a damn fun movie. Tennenbaums and GPH are probably the most accessible of his Wes Anderson-y movies.

Like someone said above, his movies tend to age incredibly well over multiple viewings, so if you don’t get the hype after seeing those, I think that’s fine and fair. If you have time (and the inclination to delve in), seeing those twice may be worth it.
