  1. I am on vacation but I took a minute to check on the team. Saw we were up 9 and thought, “not bad”. It was a 10 point spread and KenPom agreed.

Then I come here and it is all gnashing of teeth. I love this place and am never leaving.

Some movies hit you over the head with an anvil.  Some use a scalpel.  Some movies like to preach at you and some like to ask questions and invite reflection and examination.  Most people are either plot driven, character driven, or vibe/setting driven.  I'm a character guy myself, but ultimately you like what you like.  No shame in that.

Sure - Zone of Interest wasn't introducing a brand new concept.  But what I liked about the film is how it went about showing its point.  The sounds of Auschwitz were going on constantly - did you key in on them, or did you eventually find yourself adapting and tuning them out?  We know Nazis are evil - but that evil is presented in a different way.  The family is otherwise ordinary, but for the absolutely confounding fact that they seem totally unfazed by what is happening all around them.  Grandma only lasts a few days before having to bail, so we know that the awfulness of what is happening is perceptible to others.  So why are these people so immune?  Dad is consumed with advancing his career.  He wants recognition for his work, more titles, more respect, more worth.  Mom is invested in her kids and is willing to go to great lengths to ensure they have the best environment to live in, according to her eyes.  Wouldn't you agree that the pursuit of professional success, and the way parents get myopic and absorbed by what they perceive to be the best for their children, transcend Nazi Germany and would be in operation today?  If so, what are some things that your are absorbed in?  What is distracting you from the presence of evil around you?

I get why this film might not be liked or leave someone feeling it is lacking in plot, but to reduce it "banality of evil, I get it" is to do a great disservice to what makes the film worthwhile.

I agree with most of this, but disagree on the bold.  She doesn't give a shit about her kids and basically ignores them most of the movie.  She shows more interest in her garden than she does her children.  There are multiple times where she alludes to or flat out says that she enjoys the status that being the wife of the warden of Auschwitz affords her.  Her wanting to stay is 100% for selfish reasons and uses her kids as an excuse/leverage to stay.

  3. Caught up today and this show rips.  It's wild to think to back then when people just didn't know other cultures and languages existed.  I think they convey that very well.  Also really like the church politics intertwined with the palace intrigue of Japan.

I thought War Is Over was insipid and only nominated because it is backed by John Lennon's name.  I'm already annoyed it is probably going to win.

Agreed.  It's going to be very annoying.

  5. After years of saying I was going to do it, I finally did the Shorts screening at the Alamo.  I just had time to do the Animated this week.   To me, the two best were probably Pachyderm and Ninety-Five Senses.  Pachyderm was interesting and then really got rough when you realize what's happening.  Just a brutal final line.  Ninety-Five Senses was fun and they lull you into it until it hits pretty hard in the end.  Both were really good and I have thought a lot about them since.

I actually really liked one of the extra ones they showed, Wild Summon, too.  I don't necessarily agree with the stance (eating animals is cruel) because I like meat, but it was great visually and could be effective if I was open to it.

I'll do the Live Action next week.

I thought it wasn’t coming out for another week. Wife has no interest in watching it so I guess I will be waiting for streaming like part 1.

You're not allowed to go see a movie without you wife?

  7. Of course Mulkey couldn’t be bothered to attend on her day off. She’s the fucking worst and I have no idea how she cons people to play for her. I guess winning cures all ills.

  8. About to head out to get breakfast in KC and then on to Lawrence. Cant wait.

Saw a bunch of people in UT gear on the plane. While that’s not unusual in Austin, it was more than usual and a lot of groups of guys or guys flying alone. My buddy who flew in from Dallas said the same thing. We may have a pretty good representation, which is great considering how mediocre we are.

    Good luck mate

G+ is a shitshow. They have an app called standby skipper. I forget what it costs for the week, like 40 bucks, and it does a lot of the g+ bookings for you so you don’t have to be glued to your phone. My wife’s in charge of mostly that stuff and she thought it worked out

I’d look into that, maybe a review or tutorial on YouTube. I like ear scouts on YouTube for G+ walk through/ tips/ pointers. He has on screen graphics so you kinda get a handle of what it’ll look like in real time. Rides like slinky, Remys, frozen, can all sell out so book those first for the day according to whatever park you’re heading to

We use another app called mouse dining for dinners. You can get texts for when a spot opens at a restaurant you want eat for your particular time frame. Also lots of times people just double book restaurants for days and the day of they cancel one and goto the other so there’ll be lots of movement on those days for openings

Thanks, that's helpful.  I actually watched a couple of Ear Scouts videos based on your rec earlier in the thread.  I had to have a lie down after, but they were very helpful to see how the app works.  I'll check out the standby skipper and mouse dining you mentioned.

  10. We're headed to Disney next week.  It will be the second time for our 7YO daughter and first for our 4YO son.  Our 7YO came, but she was only 2 at the time.  It was more of an extended family trip my wife didn't want to miss, so she'll be much more into it this time.  We're excited and I am trying to get everything planned.  I am not working right now, so I have the time, but I don't know how you do this with a real job.  It's exhausting combing through everything.  A couple of things I've noticed that frustrate me:

    - This Genie+/Lightning Lane system is absurd.  I'd rather not be super stressed at 6:45am to buy my pass and to keep refreshing the page.  Also, would rather not be on my phone all day in the park trying to get it all booked.  Really fucking bad system and I can't believe they haven't changed it.

    - The Disney website is garbage.  It's slow and hard to use.  Finding and booking restaurants is a pain the ass.  I know there's a lot going on, but just hire OpenTable to run it.  It would be so much easier.  I guess they don't feel the need to spend money on tech if everyone is coming anyway.

Looking forward to the trip.  We're going right before Spring Break, so it will hopefully be a little less nuts out there.  I know it will always be busy to an extent.  We'll see.

  11. Saw Part 1 again at the Alamo a couple of weeks ago.  The last 20 mins or so drags, but otherwise, that movie rules so hard.  Just the best filmmaking across the board and the visuals and sound in the theater are incredible.  The CGI isn't seamless, but it's pretty damn close.  The whole movie feels tactile, which is a real rarity in big movies these days.

    Can't wait for Part 2.

I just started watching.  Probably been mentioned here before but Nick Sobotka’s girlfriend’s tits in season 2 are impressive.

This is probably the most talked about thing in the history of Hornfans/Shaggy/Surly.  It's been noted.

  13. We did a boat trip on Mallorca a couple of years ago and spent a night on the front end and a couple nights on the back end in Palma.  We bounced to coastal towns on the boat for the days in between.  I'll ask my friends and see if anyone remembers where we went throughout the trip.  There was a lot of booze and places were written in something called "Spanish", so I don't remember specific places we went.

  14. Me and a buddy are making our way to Lawrence this year to pay our respects to God's Gift to Basketball before we take off to the SEC.

Anyone going this year?  Anyone been in the past and have tips on the town before/after the game?
