  1. Always find it interesting that our best serving rotation is with Hahn at the line because, even if she has a tough serve, that rotation is with Gabriel at the net blocking and only 2 hitters - which I would say is where we are weaker. I agree that serving aggressively is important, especially against the tougher teams to keep them out of system. I am also okay with "good miss" service errors that accompany an agressive serving game plan; however, it seems that there is no plan B when a server is missing a lot of serves - especially in close matches. IMO, It is slightly surprising that Eggleston, White, and even O'Neal go back to the service line and continue to attempt their aggressive serve when they have been off all night and it is a close match. Sometimes you have to just get it in, play defense, and hope the other team makes a mistake. Looking forward to Baylor - both teams have played 44 sets - Baylor has 92 service errors and 46 aces all season (average 1.0 aces per set). Texas has 139 service errors and 58 aces all season (average 1.3 aces per set). Texas has only had 2 matches where errors were under 10 (both had 9 SE), and Baylor has only had 2 matches where errors were 10 or over (one had 13 and one had 10). Side note: I am glad Agbaji got some playing time in front of her home state crowd!
  2. I was honestly wondering if fatigue was a factor. Not an excuse, but with 4 away matches in a row, they have likely been out of Austin for 8-10 days out of the past two weeks when their classes are probably picking up the intensity as well. Gabriel, O'Neal, Fields, and Phillips have not yet had the experience of constantly trying to keep up with school, practice, and playing multiple high caliber matches in a row. (I know Gabriel played in the post season last year, but I think school is more intense work-wise at the beginning of a semester and sitting the bench is less stressful). On the other hand, several schools have played more matches than we have (i.e. Rice and Pitt). Did not watch the game so I am going off stats/comments, but it seems everything kinda broke down - passing, setting, hitting, and serving. Because of that, I am more leaning toward concluding it was a baaaaaad day all around that hopefully we can overcome. Since I havent been active in this thread yet this season, here are some of my overall observations/thoughts so far: Blocking: with 2 freshman middles + 1 freshman and 1 undersized as opposites, blocking has not been our strength as in years past. I think it will improve as the season goes on with the freshman getting better at reading setters and adjusting to quicker sets (fingers crossed Butler is able to get healthy and bring some experience to the front line) Passing: overall, until the Rice match, receiving and defense had seemed not to be as big a liability as in years past. Peterson and Hahn seem to have improved. I thought Eggleston passed very well against Stanford and BYU, and most the time I would almost rather her stay on over Rounsaville. (TBH I would feel more comfortable if we had more depth in the DS position, but that has been discussed here before). Setting: As others have pointed out, Gabriel needs to spread the sets out more, but I think that is something that will get better during the season. I think we are currently too predicable for the blockers. Its not going to happen, but I wish we would run a cross play with the MB going for a slide and Fields going for quickish middle (with a backrow pipe option as well). Hosting: I agree that the loss to Rice definitely hurt our chances at hosting, and we have to take care of business in conference play (+A&M). I am worried about Baylor, but glad we have them at home first. Looking at the schedule of the teams that could end up in top 4 ranking: (1) Nebraska, (4) Penn State, (7) Minnesota, and (9) Wisconsin all have at least one loss and all wont make it through conference play without another. Penn State also plays (6) Pitt two times. (10) Washington plays Wisconsin twice and Standford and Oregon in conference play. (5) Baylor plays undefeated (13) Hawai'i before conference play. So IMO the host sites may still be open with a few losses even though our loss was to a low ranked opponent. Anyone else watch the Stanford v. Nebraska match...have any thoughts?
  3. Nebraksa’s assistant coach in charge of defense is the libero who helped lead Team USA to win a World Championship and a bronze medal in Rio. I think this is only her second season, so I’m interested to see how she develops defensive players (but I mean aNational Championship your first year isn’t too shabby)
  4. They have shut down Yazzie pretty effectively, I think if she can get going we may have a chance
  5. Her jump float was pretty bad at the first of the season too...she really should not jump serve
  6. Yeah the lift call on a set was weird
  7. It’s been a little bit since we have passed this bad in serve receive
  8. I have recently become a Tipsy Chick fan, they always get the grilled corn just right.
  9. https://www.ncaa.com/brackets/print/volleyball-women/d1/2018 The printable bracket lists regional dates as Dec. 7-8, which is Friday and Saturday, but I did not realize the two matches would be played on back to back days.
  10. If we take care of business and end up against BYU, I definitely think Miller being out makes things more interesting. I don’t know if we would rather face Illinois or BYU
  11. I haven’t been able to watch the past few games, but I saw some comments about Hahn not playing particularly well (as usual)...wonder if instead of leaving or fighting for the setter position, Shook tries to earn her spot as the right back DS like Dalton did.
  12. Agreed. I think that Elliot's goal for the rest of the conference schedule should be to let Logan gain experience playing all 6 rotations, even if she is struggling a little. If needed, a DS can sub in if it gets to be a closer match.
  13. We don’t have enough subs to run a 6-2 I don’t think. I still wish he would try a 5-2, but Logan would have to stay in and play back row. who do y’all think gets the start on Wednesday? I think Elliot will go back to Shook. I like Gabriel better, but I dont know if he is at the point of completely benching Shook.
  14. Just watched the replay and here is what I noticed: setting - IMO for 1.5 sets Shook was actually setting quite well by getting hands on passes she would typically bump set and spreading out her sets nicely. Obviously, Shooks accuracy went downhill and the Texas hitting pct. while she was in was .162 vs. Gabriel’s .452 (at 17-13 in the 3rd). Unfortunately I still think Gabriel is too short to run a 5-1, and we will get completely burned against taller/better/quicker outsides and middles (i.e. Stanford, Nebraska, Minnesota, Florida, etc.) + our defense is not good enough to pick up the slack. I have always really liked the rotation where Yazzie stays outside and Eggleston hits from the right side, we seem to score a lot of side out points with this strategy. Also, for once I feel like missed serves were not a major part of the outcome tonight.
  15. Ehhh if IIRC, there were quite a few road games last year that we should have lost but barely won in 5. Even late in the season
  16. I wonder how many tip balls we sent over the net tonight...
  17. Just for fun, I kinda want to see what a 5-2 would look like with Shoot setting on front row and Gabriel subbing to set on the back row. Gabriel's defense, coverage, serve, and footwork getting under passes looked somewhat better than Shook, but having a taller block and setter attack option with Shook at the front would be helpful.
  18. I agree. But I am wondering if an assistant coach change would help? Sullivan coaches the liberos and seems content where he is, but I wonder if Johnson will want to get back to being a head coach any time soon.
  19. I wonder if this law will also apply to individuals only traveling domestically in NZ. I think this law is basically the rule in the US--except for the threat of fine and/or prosecution--US border agents can pretty much force you to unlock your phone or laptop unless you want the device confiscated. Ever since I heard the story about US CBP agents demanding that a NASA employee unlock his NASA-issued phone, I have wondered what you do if you are traveling with work devices that contain confidential information/any other information typically protected from disclosure (medical, legal, corporate, client info, etc.). I would not trust that any copy made of the devise is properly deleted and safe from security breaches.
  20. Pretty sure you are right, I just glanced at their awards and special teams they had been named to. But I do think Petersen is a great addition at libero, and IMO her SR control and tougher serve are looking better than McCoy.
  21. How do you pick between benching Hahn or Rounsaville? Honest question, because besides the Stanford match, for two years I feel like they both have been equally weak at service errors and ball control. But I just took a quick peek at their HS bios, and it seems like they were just about equal to Petersen in terms of being recognized statewide and nationally prior to arriving at Texas. So I don’t know if it’s a recruiting problem or a development problem, but it seems to keep happening.
  22. I know the commentators keep talking about the outsides not producing, but I honestly think it’s pretty hard with Shook’s sets, how well the Stanford block sets up, and their defense is getting to everything. A lot of those hits would be kills against other teams IMO.
  23. That’s just poor coaching with not managing the subs properly. Also, Autumn should have NEVER been trying to block, instead you put up a solo block, have Autumn drop off, and adjust the defense to cover more of the court
  24. We really need to work on establishing the middles
  25. I second the suggestion on the Kilmainham Gaol prison, I thought it was really interesting and I am glad that we took a tour at the last minute. I also agree that the Hop On Hop Off bus tour is an easy and fairly cheap way to both travel around the city and see some of the most popular tourist spots. I would also suggest a visit to the St. Patricks Cathedral.
