I hate negging football opinions, but this is just so stupid. He may or may not get better, but implying that a true freshman “is who he is” is a burnt orange nation comments section level bad take.

I'm not saying he won't get better or that he's a bust, I'm just saying he isn't going to become a guy that makes people miss.  He just doesn't have the hips for it.

Anyways, this isn't really the thread for this so I'll stop belaboring the point.

Yep players never improve their skillset/production over time.  It just doesn’t happen.

Not what I said, but whatever.

You could tell the agility and balance that Bijan or JB had when they were freshman.  Baxter is never going to be that type of runner.  He might be more effective when he is healthy and adds more strength and size, but he has limited ability when it comes to making a man miss and that won't change.

Idk that it’s the breaking tackles thing it’s that he doesn’t have contact balance like Roschon Bijan and Jonathon. Contact balance is a learnable thing, he doesn’t just fall down when touched, but he doesn’t use contact as an anticipatory trajectory change for balance. It’s like judo but for running backs. We just happened to have 3 contact balance black belts.

Not really.  You pretty much are what you are for most qualities at running back, especially when it is an instinctual quality.  IOW, Baxter is who he is.  He might get stronger and be able to run through arm tackles better, but he is not going to suddenly have the balance and agility that Bijan or Brooks have.

  4. They had much more success running the ball when we were subbing in Broughton, Carter and Finkley.  The backups were worse, shocking I know.  But it does make me question why we were doing such wholesale substitutions.  I can see Sweat needing to be spelled, but did we have to also take out Sorrell and Murphy at the same time?  I think this speaks to our complacency when we think we have a game in the bag.

  5. Could someone explain how things work when you have a passing game coordinator that isn't the DC?  Is PK only calling what the front 6/7 are doing on a given play and the secondary is instructed by Joseph?  If PK calls for a blitzing LB is it up to Joseph to set the coverage based off of that?

  6. We really stopped getting pressure in the second half, we seemed to stop bringing any blitzes and tried to cover our way to the end of the game. Don’t know why, after so many examples to the contrary, we would go away from bringing pressure.

On a related note, we really haven’t gotten consistent pressure with just the DL as the season as worn on, especially from the edge. Burke has had some good moments but Sorrell hasn’t really taken the next step like I thought he would. For the D to truly become dominant we need to be able to pressure the QB with just the front four.

  7. Are you seeing an uptick in recruiters pinging you on Linkedin? It was dry for a while (Nov '22 -> July '23) but since early fall and especially I'd say the last 6 weeks I'm getting hit up 2-3 times a week which to me is signaling Q4/Q1 hiring growth and a softening of the market again, which might bode well for you. Your role in enablement/training is a back office and operational excellence role so the softening of that particular market should be a fast follow to the client-facing stuff we are seeing picking up bigly now.

Has been my experience too. Was nothing from q3 2022 to q2 2023 but since then have had quite a few.

    QUICK FINAL THOUGHTS

A complete, all-around great game for the Texas offensive line not only aided the Horns greatly in securing a victory versus the a sneaky-good and troublesome opponent in the K-State Wildcats, it also gave us a glimpse toward the future.

(And for the record, let it show that we at the Deep Dig have been happy as two-petered puppies to leave schools like Baylor and Texas Tech in the dustbin of Longhorn history with the Longhorns' move forthcoming move to the SEC, but you can add K-State to that list, as well. A constant pain in the neck, the Wildcats now have an alpha ball coach in Klieman who brings a tough mindset to his team that can lead to bad outcomes if you don't play your cards just right. We say good riddance. While Baylor is a school you want to divorce out of pure embarrassment of association, K-State, those stupid purple uniforms and Klieman is one you'd just prefer not to think about anymore).

Kelvin Banks played his best game of the season, and that won't come as a surprise to anyone watching the FOX broadcast as Joel Klatt drooled over him constantly as he highlighted some of his more special plays. It was nice to see him get back to playing a game just a notch above the excellent 2023 baseline he's set for himself so far, but we'd be lying if we didn't say the piece of the OL that excited us most this week was getting to see sophomore Cam Williams get his first start for the banged-up Christian Jones. Williams played like an instant-impact, All-conference-type of player right out of the box. Yes, he did commit three false-start penalties as he obviously was shaking off the butterflies, but how cool is it that he played so well outside of those mistakes that he actually scored so well in the Deep Dig?

Put it this way: if not for the false-start penalties (and those are not the type of penalties that can tend to "stick with" a player like being extremely prone to holding due to bad technique/balance issues or whatever was going on with Jake Majors last year -- and once against Kansas State! -- with the snap infractions). Those false starts were jitters. Regardless, without them on the books, he would have scored at 79.95, just south of the elusive 80-mark, against a defense that featured a lot of three-man fronts leading to more evaluation reps than usual for the two tackles. It would have been a monster first score ever in the Deep Dig that came even a little harder-earned than usual. We urge you not to let your memories of so many false-starts be what sticks with you out of this game for Cam Williams as that will leave you unprepared for what is to come on the right side of the offensive line moving into the future.

Will it be hard to replace .... say .... (and only potentially, but let's just say) .... Jonathon Brooks, Quinn Ewers, JT Sanders, Adonai Mitchell, Whittington, Christian Jones, Sweat, Byron Murphy, Jaylan Ford, Ryan Watts and others in 2023? Of course. Knowing that Texas will have DJ Campbell lined up next to Cam Williams for the next two seasons helps to ease the burn of those losses, though.

Did you know that Cam Williams had five knockdowns in this game? Five times where he took another grown college athlete and just threw him down on the ground? Not like a situation where he was engaged in a block and the defender disengaged, tried to make a tackle and ended up on the ground. No, instances where Cam Williams decided somebody needed to be thrown to the ground like a piece of trash or a little doll against his will and Williams just went ahead and did it. Five times.

We have been doing the Deep Dig since 2013. We have had the same template for charting since 2015 that is (relatively) easy to search for these kinds of things. Going back over the years, has anyone ever done this? Let's just look at the time that Sark and Flood have been in town:

    2023

Christian Jones - 3 knockdowns vs. UH
Christian Jones - 3 knockdowns vs. Kansas
Kelvin Banks - 3 knockdowns, 1 pin vs. Rice
Christian Jones - 1 knockdowns, 1 pin vs. Rice

    2022

Kelvin Banks - 3 knockdowns vs. ISU
Christian Jones - 3 knockdowns, 1 pin vs. OU
Christian Jones - 3 knockdowns vs. UTSA
Christian Jones - 1 knockdown, 2 pins vs. ULM

    2021

Junior Angilau - 4 knockdowns, 1 pin vs. ISU
Derek Kerstetter - 4 knockdowns vs. OSU
Adrej Karic - 2 knockdowns, 1 pin vs. TCU
Christian Jones - 2 knockdowns, 1 pin vs. Tech
Junior Angilau - 2 knockdowns, 2 pins vs. Tech
Derek Kerstetter - 3 knockdowns vs. Tech
Jake Majors - 3 knockdowns vs. Arkansas (also allowed 3 pressures, 2 TFLs, 1 sack and 1 run-stuff)

Instead of remembering the false-starts, you can instead choose to remember that we just saw one of only two instances (including Angilau 2021) where a Texas offensive lineman put his opponents straight into the dirt five or more times in one game.

    Onward to TCU.

I thought Conner was quite good and this seems to corroborate that.  He stayed on blocks much better than he did against BYU.

Blackwell was standing right next to the guy who caught the ball as the play was developing and then chose to drift 5 yards the opposite direction to his right. Was a bad play by him. We had the other hook routes defended fairly well.Screenshot2023-11-07at9_56_57AM.thumb.png.e9f7f98b3e90ba4fde26f80edecc5907.png

Klein ran a lot of all curls on us in the second half.  They picked up that we are terrible in zone, especially the linebackers.  Multiple times we had two guys cover the same receiver or like in this case, take false steps for no apparent reason.

He's had sciatica. If he can't scramble, at all, in a P5 football game as a QB, then don't fucking play him. Sorry for the back pain, but either get your shit together and take some meds and get out there, or just say you can't go.

Now it makes sense why he moves like an office bound, 40 something middle manager, he has the same afflictions as one.

Agreed.  I'm not sure why Keilan hasn't gotten more touches, the few times he has he's run hard and made things happen.

Gerry said this morning that he is a perfect candidate at H Back, or the JWhit role of essentially a run blocking WR. He said he is just as quick as Whittington but far more nasty as a blocker and he has the wingspan of someone 6'4'' which helps in the run game.

far more nasty than perhaps our best blocking WR ever?  I think Gerry might be selling this guy a bit too hard.
