  1. As someone who was a fat kid, lost a lot of weight in college and slowly gained it all back to being 3 bills, I see both sides here.  Can I blame society/government for allowing there to be so many hidden calories and downright poison in our food?  Sure.  Can I blame my parents for ingraining that I HAVE to eat everything on my plate when I was a kid?  Maybe.  Can I lament that I used to walk and have time to play sports so much more than I do now with my wfh job?  Yes.

But ultimately, as a grown man the buck stops with me.  If I want to get back down to a good weight (I probably won't ever be sub 200 but I'd be over the moon with 225) I am going to have to stop eating so much and start moving around a lot more.  I've already cleaned up my diet considerably with the help of my wife (she is 120 lbs and very health conscious) but I just eat too much.  I'm sure my brain has been wired to not feel satiated, but I can just get used to it.  I have before.  Ultimately my weight is my responsibility.

But I also would never belittle anyone for getting surgery or using medications (though the latter seems like way too much of a gray area to do willy nilly), and I don't think anybody has really done that in this thread.  I will deride people who don't even give an effort and say they can't do anything about it, which is the majority of fat people in the US.

this shows that 8% are social sciences and history, 6% is psychology, visual and performing arts is 5% and communications is 5%.  That's nearly a quarter that are varying levels of bullshit.  Of course many of those folks go on to have successful careers, like myself, a history and geography major.  But I found my way into tech and learned a lot on the job.  I can't honestly attribute all that much of my degree to doing this.  The ability to communicate clearly and effectively, I suppose.  But that is a pretty nebulous ROI for 50k in debt.

  3. Ah yes, the "pointless degrees" argument.  Every one of those punchline, talking point, anecdotal degrees we use to make an argument is less than 5% of all college graduates.  And yet, elected and appointed officials use them to craft ALL higher education policy/funding nowadays.  That would be like Lupus dictating our entire health care model.  I'm glad people want to learn a trade.  You can do both, you can be licensed/skilled and also be a well-rounded citizen with critical thinking skills.  It's not fucking binary, because neither is the human brain.
Yes, at some point in your life...somebody with an Art History degree made you coffee.  That's not the foundation for public policy, that just means you need to make your own fucking coffee at home for less money.  Half the folks in work with in finance don't have finance degrees.  You can learn to read a balance sheet in a few hours.  You can't learn critical thinking in a few hours, it takes exposure to many different fields.  Everybody conveniently fucking forgets that MOST, the MAJORITY, of your college credit hours were in something other than your technical field.

Where does the 5% come from? That seems pretty low…

Also I think the point is that much of the anecdotes here about getting a good job with non-STEM/specialized degrees/whatever are becoming increasingly less relevant. A 45 year olds experience is not relevant to a 21 year olds in todays competitive landscape, where every kid their age has a degree.

Not to mention taking that bet saddled with 50k+ of debt.

  4. Yeah was about to post layoffs.fyi is a pretty good source for tech layoffs.

Tech recruiters were definitely making bank, even though it is a job that almost anybody could do.  It is such a boom time job, 2020-2022 everybody was hiring so much that every person "breaking into tech" was either in recruiting or sales, with the former making over 6 figures to DM people on LinkedIn.

  5. my first vehicle (2006) was a 1984 Chevy C10, not unlike the below but not nearly as nice image.png.06520c17864753ac5bb2630fa9c56a62.png

I loved that thing, feels about as wide as it is long.  We sold it for around $500 when it started having rust in the fuel tank, which my dad and I both regret to this day.  These things are selling for 30k plus now.

  6. Listening to tonight's IT livestream and Bobby & Gerry are reading text messages from their sources and they mention that UT will have good news tomorrow and they will have to do a video together tomorrow because of that news.
Y'all think think the good news is a portal commitment OR a WR coach hire?

God damn, get a hobby, take up woodworking or something.

The thing is, interest rates at these modest levels shouldn’t slow “the economy”. They will discourage malinvestment and encourage investment in productive ventures. If that slows your economy, perhaps your economy was shitty…

isn't it just due to the percent increase?  If we were already at 4% before these hikes a 12.5% increase wouldn't have been felt.  But going from .5% to 4.5% is impossible to not have ramifications.

I’ve seen it all. Now soulless, motherless, cock sucking lawyers are looking down on people from other industries. The next time I get a divorce or a car accident I will be sure to show you my McCombs degree so you can look down on me in air quotes while sucking the bottom of my shoes to bill me more hours.

tell us how you really feel

  9. is @phdhorn still taking forecast requests?

We've planned to be camping this saturday into sunday at Meridian state park.  Forecast calls for 'scattered thunderstorms', should we cancel or does it seem like we'll just be getting short lived stuff that we should bear with?  its a group of people (moms with toddlers) without much stomach for dealing with weather...
