One of those interior DL needs to leave.

Payne looked like a monster in the playoffs and he was hardly playing this year. Even without all the coaching changes it doesn't make much sense for Oatis, Keenan, and Payne to return next year. One of those guys can get a bag somewhere else and be the "guy."

Would be nice if we had a DL coach to entice them.

On Silas Bolden, in the Pac-12 conference -

    - In 2022, he was #1 in kickoff returns (total yards as well as average per return)

    - In 2023, he was #2 in both

    - In 2023, he was top 10 in all purpose yards

(On the Oregon State 247 board, they seemed very disappointed to see him leave, and a few remarked how Texas would be a good fit.)

Poor Oregon State has been absolutely decimated since being left behind.

Understanding Stewart is a shit-heel and your original point is about draft stock/NIL dollars; If he does have some type of longer term injury, doesn't taking more money early make sense?  He has all the physical talent in the world but injuries can derail just as fast as being considered a raw prospect.

This is why you’re still in the mail room, Glen.

Man I forgot about Hilton Hill entirely. You’re kind of making my point for me though. There’s been no shortage of DBs coming in and leaving as NFL prospects, despite many of them coming in overrated as you mentioned. It’s really the one group Texas consistently kept putting people into the league even during down years. For the most part those secondaries didn’t have the benefit of playing dominant defensive fronts like this year’s group did (partial exception for 2020 with Ossai finally being used correctly).

I think the issue since 2013 has been talent development. The players might have been rated properly out of high school but under-developed. It says a lot when they flounder in college but then get to the league and succeed. That tells you the talent was wasted in college and the kid probably lost money because of it. We collected talent based on our old productivity, and then we squandered it. We used to develop talent. Mike Huff was a 3️. I think Cedrick Griffin was either a 3️ or low 4️. Michael Griffin was a high school running back.
Again, I’m not promoting Akina as a new secondary coach. I’m just saying he set a baseline that we haven’t met since he left. It would be nice to have someone who taught fundamentals in the secondary again. I do agree that the talent has tapered off in recent years. I don’t expect many of the guys transferring out to have successful pro careers.

His skin is heading for the floor. The game evolves and so does coaching. Has he made his other stops DBU?

The question was asked, and I answered it. I’m pretty sure he didn’t have the talent at any other stops, though. I’m not advocating making him the corners coach, but I’m not saying it wouldn’t work, either. He won’t recruit, so that would be a huge problem. I do believe he’d be a huge upgrade for development, though. Coverage principles don’t change. Saban is old AF and still coaches up DBs. Our DBs have pretty questionable technique right now. I think he’d be a great hire as an analyst. Maybe he can teach Terry Joseph some things.

Ok, I'm sold...not that it took much, you guys had me at Akina

What's everyone's infatuation with Akina coming back here...I just don't get it.

He has skins on the wall. He coaches technique. He teaches guys how to study film. He is the reason we were DBU at one time.
