Makes sense.  What doesn't make sense are the draft evaluations.  Odunze is ranked as high as a top 10 pick, mainly because he will supposedly test (4.3 speed) really well at the combine.  But I can't think of one instance where he makes people look like they're running in sand like Worthy does.

Worthy seems to have that Tyreek play speed in highlights.  Seems like that should be pretty coveted in the NFL.  But I've seen Mitchell as having a higher draft grade as well.

Odunze has X’s speed with Mitchell’s size. At least he does on paper. I would draft Worthy over Mitchell, but they’re both fantastic. Mitchell gets the benefit of single coverage a lot because DCs are doubling X. And I understand GMs loving odunze over both of them. He’s a pretty special player with traits you can’t coach.

If y’all run well on us, you’ll likely beat our ass. I’m counting on our interior linemen caving in your interior OL and forcing Penix into some bad decisions and bad throws. I’m also optimistic because we will be at full health with all of our weapons. We’ve vastly improved on 3rd and 4th down defense and rush defense, the two areas that got us beaten by y’all last year. Add to that our depth at RB and the new WR threats and the year of improvement for Quinn and I like our odds. Y’all definitely are capable of beating us, though. Your biggest strength is a problem for our biggest weakness.

Not all our weapons. Catalon already hopped in the portal and he plays a position where we have our greatest weakness. We also don't know if X will be 100% for the game, just like we didn't find out about the broken hand he played several games with (and Quinn's finger issue on his throwing hand) until after last season was all said and done. I do expect Watts at corner and Baxter at RB to be near full strength..or at least I hope.

Bobby says X will be 100%. He and Baxter and Watts have a full month to heal their bumps and bruises. I tend to agree with Bobby that we’ll be 100%, but you’re right that we won’t know anything for sure.

Catalon is not a weapon. Not in this game. He’d only be a liability.

For the record, I am not claiming that will happen.  Just genuinely curious if you guys think that it will be a close game if it does happen, otherwise you guys should win reasonably comfortably?

The only thing that gives me hope against your DL is that we don't really run a traditional run game at the interior line.  Our rushing attack is more schemed (e.g. 49ers) and likely will not test your interior DL unless we've schemed to put them in a bad position.

And I totally agree that the UT offense vs the UW defense is greatly underestimated.  I have zero confidence we can get many stops of that offense.  Worthy plays way faster on the field than any of our players.

Personally, I would much prefer Florida. Florida can pay better than Ole Miss and has a better recruiting base and it would be much easier to turn around Florida than try to maintain Alabama given the new world of NIL. Florida over Ole Miss seems like an easy choice.

Not to mention he’d just loot his Ole Miss roster through the portal and bring them to Gainesville.

Hi Horn Fans, looking forward to meeting all of you at the Sugar Bowl!  If you're going to the game, come stop by our tailgate in the #5 lot - just look for the blue "Ribs and Rickshaws" (long story, don't ask) canopy tent. Anyways, I can't wait to chow down on fried okra and chug some Red Stripe beer with all of you. Hooooray beer!

This will be my first time visiting Shreveport (but not my first time in the swamp if you catch my drift), and while I know it's several states away from Texas, I understand you guys are basically the home team. Personally I think that's really unfair since we're the higher seed, and the LA Bowl should have been slotted into the playoffs instead of the Sugar Bowl. But whatever, this won't be our first time overcoming east coast bias. I say BRING IT ON!

Anyway, I think UW has a really good chance to go all the way this year. Here are 5 reasons why I like my DAWGS to win.

    1. Michael Big Penix Energy Jr. He is the best player on the field, enough said on that. Heisman winner, Maxwell Trophy winner, Bilentikoff runner-up. He has 4 years of high school and 6 years of college under his belt and will do whatever he can to win the game.

    2. Offensive Line. We average a weight of 332 across the line, and they are ready to dominate the line of scrimmage. Roger Rosegarden, Jackson Powers-Johnson, Center, Ossai, Big "Orange Julius" Buelow. These boys have an attitude and are ready to rumble!!!

    3. Chuck "Steak" Morell. A new defensive scheme and a new attitude. Everyone is raving about the difference between our game plan since firing Inge and slotting Chuck into his role at DC. Don't be fooled by the stats, this defense has taken a HUGE step forward under new leadership and the stats speak for themselves.

    4. Speed, speed, speed. This is the fastest team Washington has had this century, probably since the Legion of Zoom team from 2014! Rome Odunze, Germs Bernie, Ja'Lynn McClatcher, Ja'Lynn Polk, Ja'Lynn "catches more than he drops" Mickens, Nate Fellner. This is a deeply veteran lineup, but it's the new guys who have really changed the complexion of this team. We haven't seen this much speed since the Legion of Zoom team from 2014.

    5. Time of possession. I think we can win the time of possession battle in this one. the more we can control the ball and keep our defense off the field, the greater chance we’ll have to win.

I think UW wins this one rather easily, say...34-17?

Sorry, man, I didn’t get past the “several states away” comment. Good luck finding your way to your tailgate.

SIAP, but what absolute drivel from that fat slob Ari Wasserman. He has to be one of the least talented national reporters and that is no small feat.

      Reveal hidden contents

At the Houston Touchdown Club’s annual high school awards dinner on Wednesday evening, a television reporter from KRIV-TV briefly caught up with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian about an important topic.

News broke earlier that day that backup quarterback Maalik Murphy intended to enter the transfer portal.

“That stuff is always difficult, but Maalik has been an awesome teammate and a great guy to be around,” Sarkisian said. “We wouldn’t be in the position that we’re in without him.”

Texas wouldn’t still be playing meaningful games, and Sark knows it. And it’s now moving forward without Murphy as it prepares for its first appearance in the College Football Playoff.

Sarkisian has a policy that prohibits players who have entered or plan to enter the transfer portal from remaining with the team while the process plays out. The rule, surely, has good intentions. Sarkisian wants complete buy-in from everyone on his roster at all times. If a player is considering leaving Texas, he has to know there are ramifications for that move in an era where players can come and go so freely.

This unfortunate situation — for the player and the program — is a by-product of a messed-up college football calendar and a team rule that may no longer be enforceable as soon as next year.

If anyone deserves a one-time exception to this rule, it’s Murphy.

And if any program needs a player as it prepares for a big-time matchup with a national title potentially on the line, it’s Texas.

First, let’s examine Murphy. He came to Texas as part of the Longhorns’ 2022 recruiting class as a raw prospect with loads of upside. Murphy was the first quarterback hand-picked by Sarkisian at Texas, and he left his home in Southern California knowing he’d have to develop before his time came.

In mid-December 2021 — just days before Murphy was set to sign with the Longhorns — Quinn Ewers announced that he was transferring to Texas after a brief stint at Ohio State. Murphy could have backed out of his commitment to seek a smoother path to the field. He didn’t.

Then, after Ewers arrived at Texas, the Longhorns signed five-star quarterback Arch Manning, perhaps the most hyped high school football prospect of all time — because of his ability and, of course, his name.

Murphy, despite being in the middle of a quarterback depth chart sandwich that was likely never going to afford him the chance to start, stayed at Texas. That took a tremendous amount of sacrifice for a big-bodied quarterback with a huge arm and big ceiling, especially considering he all but certainly could have started elsewhere this season.

Now let’s examine Texas. This team has belonged to Ewers since he arrived in Austin. He was the native son, the Texas-born gunslinger who was born to revive the Longhorns football program. But Ewers has suffered semi-serious injuries in each of the last two years that have forced him to miss multiple games.

When Ewers got hurt this season, there was Murphy, the quarterback who could have left the program on several occasions, to save the day. He led Texas to multiple wins — including the thrilling 33-30 overtime victory over Kansas State on Nov. 4.

When Sarkisian said Texas wouldn’t be in this situation without Murphy, he meant that quite literally. The backup quarterback saved the day for a Texas program that came into the season with a history of losing those Kansas State-like games even when it wasn’t dealing with significant injuries.

Now the Longhorns are willingly moving forward without the player who helped them stay on course for the CFP when their starting quarterback went down.

We don’t know how big of a gap there is between Murphy and Manning. But even if Sarkisian is comfortable in the event that he has to turn to Manning on the sport’s biggest stage, you’d have to think Texas is a better team with Murphy on the sideline than without him.

So why not make an exception for Murphy and keep him through the end of the season? If any program needs him, it’s Texas.

    Who loses?

It’s impossible to blame Murphy for leaving. He would be doing a disservice to himself if he were sitting on Texas’ bench next year. Sarkisian knows that and still adores Murphy and the sacrifices the quarterback has made for his program.

But Murphy, looking out for his best interest, had to make his intentions known as his peers around the country enter the portal and snap up the spots.

You can’t blame the player for doing this.

You can, however, feel pity for a player who would have every bit of a claim to a national title ring as anyone else on that roster whether he plays in January or not.

This is going to be an issue for more teams in the future. Next year, the College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams, and the postseason games — which will begin in mid-December — will bump up against the portal window.

What about the Murphys on those future teams?

It’s just an impossibly unfortunate situation.

Sarkisian may feel as though he has to stand firm on his policy because making exceptions for individual players could create a slippery slope with others. But in this instance, for a player like Murphy and in a situation with stakes so high, maybe hold a team vote? Maybe consider an alternate path? Anything?

Texas earned its spot in the College Football Playoff. Murphy helped the Longhorns get here.

He should be on the sideline on Jan. 1.

    He’s a douche bag.
