It and Deadwood are neck and neck, with BSG close behind. I enjoy watching Deadwood more, but they are both pretty good.

Ok, I had to google "bsg" and (I think) it's Battlestar Galactica. (sorry if I got that wrong).

I agree! BSG is effing amazing!  (the "reboot", right?) with Katee Sackoff and Tricia Helfer?

Agree. Welch was basically a corporate psychopath. Don't forget the UC economic "gurus" who also preached unfettered free-market shenanigans.

What's distressing now (to me, at least) is the degree to which these policies are defended, even by those people who are most harmed by those policies.

I've binged the entire 1st season today. First time I've done that since buying the DVDs in 2005 or so. Fucking brilliant.

Yeah, I think it's the best tv show ever. Like modern-day Shakespeare.

A guy I played football with in high school was the President of his Southern Baptist youth group. One day he mentions getting down with his girlfriend a devout Baptist girl and someone questions his hypocritical stance on abstinence. His reply "I just wedge it between her butt cheeks. It's like a hand job but with her butt. That isn't fornication."

And that's not even close to the dumbest thing coming out of Southern Baptists' mouths.

Sure. The art work is extraordinary to me, but I'm not up on Asian cartoons. Maybe it's common place. The faces are very expressive even evocative.

The first frame illustrates that people (like me) thinking of higher gas prices as a small price to pay really don't consider a single mother with children just scraping by. For her, even in her economy turtle, 5-10 dollars a week is a big deal. I've lived squeaking by at times where a gallon of Los Angeles gas meant $4. I'm stung by the first frame because I am not her. I didn't think hard enough about her.

Second frame would be good filmmaking. A long shot to indicate how small she is in this world. It's not just a cartoon making a point, the creator has made me care about her. I don't know that I noticed the land yacht next her on the first pass.

Third frame. This guy states my position. He's creepy with his smile. At first read, I felt it was a caricature of a the simple viewpoint.

Fourth frame invites you to think. He pulls away in his giant SUV pouring filth into the air. Maybe I'm not that guy. There's another dimension to this. The man in the car could do more than make his patriotic donation with broad self-congratulation. He has the means to make a patriotic donation by driving a car of less excessive demand of fuel.

Then the thought occured to me that he could also make a the patriotic gesture of helping a fellow citizen whose patriotism comes at a much greater personal cost.

His patriotic gesture is trivial. Her patriotic gesture is mandatory and very costly.

Next, I was invited to consider the satisfaction non-Ukrainians get from wearing Uke flag pins or retweeting sweet cartoons of old ladies staring down tanks. We're the guy in the big car. The Ukrainians appreciate international sympathy, but they're the woman with woefully short resources trying to make life work.

It's a thought provoking excercise in interpretation. At least to me. It's not a matter of intelligence. I was interested and moved by the art. Others may not be. It's subjective.

    Well done.

    I'm guessing that you're a fan of Miyazaki's films?

  6. Dang, awesome thread. I'm just 4 years late.

For rice cooker I can't recommend the Zojirushi enough. I've bought 3.

For tom yum soup I cheat and get a paste in a bottle from my local asian grocery store. Same with tom kha soup.

Thanks for the note on differences between vietnamese and thai fish sauce.

  7. So when we have a chance to add something that's weird and cool, we just say "nah, b/c all the weird and cool stuff was gone 15 years ago"?

I don't know if the word for that is shortsighted, or self-fulfilling, but what a strange way to basically guarantee that nothing new/weird/cool is ever added to the city or university. Just my opinion.

  8. I like Ellsworth Kelly's Austin.

What I'm kinda worried about is moisture seeping into the widows where it joins the wall. If any black mold type stuff starts growing I hope they take care of it asap, and I can't imagine it won't grow.

But, imo, it's weird stuff like this that makes a great university, and city.

Good for UT and good for Austin for having this. Fuck the haters.

  9. I'm not much of a Rogan fan, but don't hate him, either.

Imo, give this shit a rest (trying to cancel Rogan). This is not the battle worth fighting. Neil Young and the other 60's era musicians can take their music and their tens of dollars in royalties and do whatever they want.

Rogan can have whatever idiots on his show that he wants. Again, "progressives" need to stop getting so butt-hurt over this.

Flight crews are vulnerable at 30,000 feet. Any passenger who lays a hand a crew member should be prohibited from flying. I’m just not convinced a drunken 19 year old girl who pushes away the hand of a flight attendant should be kept off planes for the rest of her life.

How about 10 years, then? Don't like that? Then don't get drunk and push away the hand of a flight attendant.

  11. Nothing necessarily against BLM, but imo they share the same major weakness that afflicts the Dem party: sheer organizational incompetence. Absolute dumbfucks when it comes to being realistic and practical and achieving the (or any) mission.

  12. I want to like tech. I mean, they are like your slow-witted but mostly nice cousin you see once in a while at the family reunion. Not retarded, but not quite all there. They live in the trailer park and claim to like it that way. Their septic system is on its last legs and they don't really have potable water and everything in their garden is stunted and wilted. But they like to party and for the most part you can look past their faults.

But every once in a while they get a burr in their saddle and have to be put down.

    That time is coming.

    Weird.

Maybe I'm a bad person but I kinda find a cosmic karma thing going on when their own actions greatly hasten their own demise.

The world is a better place without them. Literally. They could wind up killing your mom, grandmother, etc. b/c of their dumbshit anti-vax views.

  14. Haven't read any of the prior posts in re Clemens. Neg me all you want but he doesn't deserve to get into the Hall. I love him for being a Horn and all, but he's a liar and a cheater. Fuck him. Some people can't tolerate rudeness in a man. I can't tolerate those who should know better but lie and cheat nonetheless.

  15. The whole drinking piss thing is funny. Stupid but funny. I remember Ghandi saying something about doing that (for ostensible health reasons) and even referenced the bible where it says to "drink from your own well" or something like that.

The stupidity of people is boundless.

  16. Yeah, never heard of her.

Some of the comments/writing in the linked article mentioned her being in heaven. I wouldn't be too sure of that. Dipshits who knowingly put not only themselves but others at risk of contracting a potentially lethal virus belong in hell. Just my opinion.
