  1. So I lost track of this thread since the move from the place in my avatar.  Just uncorked a bottle of Angel's Envy tonight.  First time sipping it at home.  Only other time I was at a bar and had a few shots after I had other drinks so I was not paying as close of attention.

I really like this stuff.  Might be my new favorite on the sweeter side.  Has a fruity flavor like there is some fruit wood in the barrel.  Was thinking it reminded me of a Scotch I like so I looked it up and yeah, the port barrel finish must remind me of something I've had before.  I'll have to try at my Father's house this week.  He has a lot of Scotch, he picked up that habit when we lived in Scotland.

In most cases I think blocking is unnecessary. Just install five springs, and maybe tighten up the claw a little if you still need it. If you still have tuning problems I would try eliminating other possibilities, the nut, shitty tuners, a rough spot on saddles, before blocking the bridge.

The bridges on my Strats usually don't budge since I don't whammy. I keep them tight and flat against the guitar, and usually only three springs. Tuning issues are likely to be elsewhere unless every string is going out of tune at the same time.

I have not had tuning issues, just intonation issues.  But I don't bend much yet, still working on it.  I probably won't block it.  They should get it set up fine.  Mostly curious about what they say about the bridge that is on it and options.  They are going to call me before they start.

How long did they say it would take, at Strait?  South Lamar?

Took it to the North Store.  They ship it to the S Lamar Store.  Assigned it to J Baker.  Might take 2 weeks.

  4. Just took my partscaster in for a setup at Strait.  My instructor pointed out that my nut was too high and causing intonation problems on the first few frets due to the steep angle to hit the fret leaving the string too long.  Might also get the bridge replaced.  If I do I was thinking of a Fender Standard (MIM) bridge and might get it blocked.  What do y'all think?

Any ideas on how to kill a yellowjacket nest just under my second floor roof? We have tall ceilings and there are no windows nearby. The roof is not accessible without a very tall ladder that I don’t have. The nest is probably 35’ from ground level. Can a spray go that far?

    Leave it there.

    1. They won't bother you, if you leave them alone.  35' is very far away.
    2. They eat pest insects like tent caterpillars and killing wasps means more pesticide use.
    3. When winter comes and they are mostly dormant or gone, knock the nest down with a long pole.
    4. They are more than likely Paper Wasps and not true Yellow Jackets, we just call them Yellow jackets in Texas.  Yellow Jackets nest in holes in the ground.

So I'm almost 4 months into my new lawn (Tif419 sod installed 3/22)

The builder did the front yard and I did the back myself.  My front yard is bumpy, uneven, and there are numerous areas 10+sq ft or larger that seemingly havent grown an inch in 4 months.  They are kinda off color, yellow green as opposed to bright or blue green.  I've fertilized twice with Scotts TB (not weed n feed) and had a lot of help early on from spring rain.  I'm wondering if I should go to a higher nitrogen fertilizer or maybe even Scotts Green max to give these areas a surge of growth as they appear to be stunted.

Oddly enough, the backyard is completely even, no lumps, and looks 10x better than the "professional" install that came with the house.  I have some similar areas that appear not to be growing but a majority of the yard looks dark green and lush.  I've followed the same fertilizing schedule with the back so I'm not really sure where to go from here.

Stick a pitchfork or a rod into the ground where the slow spots are.  Builder may have covered some debris like a piece or plywood, pile of bricks or extra concrete and then just covered it with a superficial layer of soil or just the sod.

  7. That's a Crepe Myrtle.

    • You can top it so it stays below the roof line, that is common.
    • You can cut it at the ground and it will come back like a new young plant.
    • You can list it on craigslist freecycle and someone will probably come dig it up and haul it off.

I got my tortoise guard from Dragonfire today. Looks good except it's more red than I had hoped. Doesn't look bad on the MIM. But the position of the pickups is a little different. I wonder if they'll work with the routes on the guitar.

I put it over the midnight wine USA Strat to see how it would look. Too much damn red. The lights make the red of the guitar way more bright red than they look to the naked eye.

I'd like to find a pg that's more brownish, but I ain't spending $60 for a Fender. That's half of what I paid for the whole MIM Strat.

IMO, it looks better on black.  White would be cool too.

  9. Waiting until I have something interesting to add.  Right now I'm learning my scales, transferring the notes on the staff to my fingers (Old violin player learning that I have to skip a finger when playing the next natural note is tripping me up a little), and working on techniques like chord transitions, hammer-ons, slurs, and pull-offs.

I've pretty much nailed Ode to Joy though.

This arrived at the office Monday afternoon. My schedule has been packed since then, and I haven’t had time to really noodle around on it.

Sweet, I was so close to getting a used one.  Share how you like those MFD pickups some time.

  11. New Guitar Day!

Custom Built Partscaster or Kit Guitar.  Trying to figure out the body and neck so if you have a guess let me know.

Finish is in excellent condition with only two minor dings, one in the face and one on one of the horns in the black.  I guess you would call this a Tobacco Burst?  I found some tear out under the finish so it made me think this might be a home built body.  The Holy Grail of Surly?  (Only I didn't build it)

I like the headstock shape, kind of a fish-hook design.  At first I thought the black on the bottom side was a cigarette burn but now I think it is rubber from hanging on a guitar stand.  Came with Graph Tech Ratio Locking tuners and the nut is not cheap plastic.  I'm assuming its a Tusq.  Had to tighten all the tuners, they were loose.

I got it home and immediately took everything apart because this guitar had some play-ability issues and I wanted to verify what was under the pickup covers.  Seymour Duncan Jimi Hendrix fully loaded pickguard.  I actually might want to sell/trade this for something else.  Date of Manufacture was the on pickups was the only date I could find on the whole guitar.  January 24, 2017.

    20180703_220222_zps40sppjih.jpg

No date or company names on the body or neck.   The Neck was actually the first thing I noticed about this guitar.  It was straight as can be and I think the noise I was complaining about was "Fret slapping" according to a knowledgeable guy who looked at it.  I need a combination of truss rod and saddle height adjustments.

The trem springs.  I might block it off like a hard tail.  Thoughts?

So far I'm happy but I need to do some setup work.  Going to try it on my own. Wish me luck.

From what I understand a pole too close to a string can pull it out of tune. A "strange reverb" as you describe it sounds more like it could be a pickup becoming microphonic due to some kind of electronic damage. Or maybe it's buzzing somewhere with the hardware. Pickups being installed out of phase can cause extra weird noise. Either way, probably not a difficult fix if it's a great deal.

What is the signature on the pickups?

It was only the G string that was affected.  There could be damage I don't know yet but I wonder what happens if I lower the pickups.

Signature is Jimmy Hendrix (Seymour Duncan)

If I can get it to work I think it is a great deal at $150 plus tax.

  13. I almost bought that guitar but I got spooked by something I have not seen before and did not know what it was.  After thinking about it I think the combination of the flat neck, the staggered pole pieces, and high setting of the pickups had the G string getting affected by the magnets and creating a really strange reverb.

Now that I know what it is I''m probably going back to buy it tomorrow.

I would wait it out until the 4th when there will probably be an MF stupid deal of the hour. Good chance there will be at least one or two G&L deals if you check every hour.

So I went and listened to side by side Legacy and S500 playing and went back to wanting more natural strat sound.  I've been looking for a MIM strat but saw that the old SDOTD for a Legacy Tribute was about $300 so now I might focus on that.

Currently it says they are out of Legacy Tributes except for Sonic blue with inventory not expected until after Independence Day but I'll watch.

If anyone wants that S500 I'll send you the location.  With the hard case it is a good deal and you might get it down to 300.
